1 Leadership & Management Master Class Programme 2014 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT 1

2 Overview We have a radical, ambitious and achievable Vision for our future. Achieving this Vision requires leaders and managers who embody our Leadership Attributes. The Leadership and Management Master Classes provide an opportunity for you to learn more about our Leadership Attributes, and to apply them in the workplace. Each Master Class can be attended as a free-standing or linked activity. They combine a mix of theoretical models and context, practical guidance and examples of good practice and aim to: Develop a shared understanding of the challenges of leadership and management at Northumbria Develop a greater understanding of the Leadership Attributes and their role in leadership and management Offer the opportunity to discuss the different aspects of, and approaches to, the roles of leader and manager Offer a range of leadership and management tools and techniques Offer significant insight: seeing things differently Offer clear and practical learning outcomes: doing things differently back at work 2

3 Leadership Master Classes Leadership Master Classes offer managers and leaders the opportunity to engage with the Leadership Attributes Framework. Master Classes will enable the development of a shared understanding of the challenges of leadership, providing engagement and discussion with the different aspects of leadership within a University context. The Master Classes series designed for grade 5, 6 and 7 leaders may be particularly beneficial to new and existing managers who are not currently on other University Leadership Development Programmes The Senior Leader Master Class series provides an opportunity for grade 8+ leaders to relate learning to real practical challenges; for example, translating strategy into action, interpreting the expectations of stakeholders, managing performance at organisational and individual levels, and relating effectively to colleagues through a senior leadership role. Each Master Class promises to be participative, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable. 4 Meeting the Needs of Our Stakeholders Wednesday 12th February 2014, 09:30 12:30 hours Overview Meeting the needs of our stakeholders at Northumbria requires us to show a commitment to understanding and addressing their requirements in line with our strategic objectives. This Master Class will analyse the stakeholders in your area of responsibility and will help you consider how you can achieve a careful balance to meet the needs of both internal and external stakeholders. Consideration will also be given to positively managing negative stakeholder feedback. Outcomes By the end of the Master Class you will have: Explained who your stakeholders are and what their needs are Identified ways in which you can either direct lot indirectly contribute to meeting the needs of the University s stakeholders. 5 Mindfulness in Modern Leadership Monday 24th March 2014, 09:30 12:30 hours Overview This Masterclass offers a practical introduction to the background and concept of the Mindful Leader which is a fast-growing field. So many of our Leadership skills and behaviours can be enhanced by developing a personal practice of mindfulness and encouraging a mindful environment in our teams. Many leaders find it difficult to step back, reflect and adjust their leadership style in today s busy world. During this session delegates will understand and develop techniques to do just that. This will be an interactive and highly participative workshop suitable for new and more established managers. 6 Acting with Integrity Wednesday 2nd April 2014, 09:30 12:30 hours Overview Leaders and managers can inspire others by role modeling the University s Values and working with integrity. This requires them to remain calm, rational and emotionally intelligent which can be difficult when personal values or preferences differ and reactions are impulsive and defensive. This Master Class will recognise how the view of others can be different to ours and explore how to respond positively and professionally rather than personally. It will consider three important facts; we all make mistakes, intentions are complex and that we/our organisation may have contributed to the problem. 7 Fostering Collaboration Tuesday 13th May 2014, 09:30 12:30 hours Overview Northumbria s aim is to work as One University. This requires leaders and managers to work closely with individuals and organisations inside and outside of the University to benefit the University as a whole. Core to collaboration is the ability to communicate openly and effectively in order to share knowledge and information. This Master Class will help you to explore the culture within your area and consider if there are elements of it that could be changed or improved to ensure collaboration is fostered. It will explore how to spot and nurture opportunities to collaborate within your team, across the wider University, and to avoid silo working and duplication of effort. 8 Developing Resilient and High Performing Organisations Monday 17th February 2014, hours Overview: This master class explores the benefits of a performance culture that encompasses wellbeing. It is for established leaders who wish to develop their understanding of the link between great performance, wellbeing and resilience. It will assist in developing the knowledge and skills that will enable leaders to shape a wellbeing and performance focus within their Faculty or Service. People are the key to the success of any organisation and in an environment of high change it is vital to understand the link between challenge and opportunity, performance and employee wellbeing. Participants will leave the master class, with a greater understanding of the link between great performance and engaged, empowered and well people. They will also leave with a tool-kit of strategies and tactics aimed at developing both personal and organisational resilience. Outcomes: By the end of the master class you will have: Linked success in organisational challenges to a wellbeing focused culture. An understanding of how the relationship between high demand and low control can impact upon performance at all levels within the organisation. A range of tools to equip themselves to raise resilience both personally and organisationally. An action plan for influencing culture and strategy within the work environment intended to raise performance and lower negative stress. 9 Presentation Skills and Public Speaking Wednesday 5th March 2014, 13:30 16:30 hours Overview: This master class will help participants gain insight into how best to plan, prepare and deliver effective and engaging small or large scale, formal or informal presentations, when the need to get a clear message across is critical. It is for established leaders who wish to communicate effectively and with confidence and credibility to a wide range of internal and external audiences. Participants will reflect on their own presentation or public speaking style and how to develop this to communicate effectively. The master class will cover: The success factors for effective presentation and public speaking. How to build your confidence: communicate with credibility, gravitas and authenticity. Understanding your audience and managing their expectations. Content management and the identification of the presentation narrative. Getting your message across: the secrets of relevance and audience engagement. Logistics: managing the event environment, style and scope of the event, plus the use of resources. Vocabulary, body language, visual and tonal style. Stimulating and managing audience participation, response and questions. Participants will be encouraged to relate the learning to their work place challenges and opportunities and to develop practical ideas and plans to address their future presentation and public speaking commitments. The learning and delivery style will be interactive, with delegate discussion and participation throughout. Outcomes: By the end of the master class you will have: Developed an understanding of the key success factors for effective presentations and public speaking. Understood how to develop content appropriate for the audience and how to get their message across effectively. Explored practical techniques to build confidence and communicate with credibility and authenticity. Gained insight into how to manage audience engagement and response. 10 Creativity and Innovation Monday 14th April 2014, 13:30 16:30 hours Overview: There is research to show that the key skills in leaders of successful organisations in the future will be those of creativity and innovation. This master class is for established leaders who wish to develop a practical awareness of how creativity and innovation can be developed in themselves and in the teams that they work in. Participants will be introduced to some very practical and engaging ways of thinking creatively and will explore how innovation can be fostered. The master class will cover: The concepts of creativity and innovation. Tools and techniques of creativity as ways of approaching problem solving. Techniques to support others to be innovative and to practice innovation as a way of thinking. Participants will be encouraged to be creative during the sessions, and to support each other in being creative and innovative. The workshop will close with some thought about how the University can foster creativity and innovation in the way that it engages with students. Outcomes: By the end of the master class you will have: Practiced a number of tools and techniques to help develop problem analysis and problem solving skills. Explored the nature of creativity and innovation as it applies to the way that students learn and develop. Considered the implications of creativity and innovation in respect of their role as a leader within the University. 11 Adaptive Leadership Friday 9th May 2014, 13:30 16:30 hours Overview: This master class is for established leaders who wish to develop a greater practical awareness of how to lead in circumstances where the context is complex and changeable. Adaptive Leadership is a practical leadership framework that helps individuals and organisations adapt and thrive in challenging environments. It is being able, both individually and collectively, to read the organisational context, better diagnose your own leadership intuition and thereby be better able to adapt your leadership style to the circumstances you and your organisation face. It is about distinguishing the essential from the expendable and bringing about a real challenge to the status quo. The master class will cover: The concept of adaptive leadership. An interactive diagnosis of the leadership required to meet the University s challenges. The moment of leadership model. An interactive diagnosis of personal leadership intuition, using participants own leadership experiences. Participants will be encouraged to relate this learning to real practical challenges they face in their leadership; for example, translating strategy into action, interpreting the expectations of governors and top managers, managing performance at collective and individual levels, relating effectively to colleagues through a leadership role. Outcomes: By the end of the master class you will have: Developed an understanding of the key principles of adaptive leadership. Explored the nature of your work context and the extent to which it is complex and volatile. Developed an overview of the key factors that influence your own leadership intuition. Explored some practical techniques for developing your leadership intuition. 12 Influencing Skills and Communication Thursday 12th June 2014, hours Overview: This master class will help participants understand the varied motivations that drive people, how to articulate a clear and relevant message and how to stimulate positive response and engagement. It is for established leaders who wish to understand how to nurture staff engagement with new institutional developments or initiatives and to effectively communicate complex issues to a wide range of colleagues. Participants will learn how to build greater participation, responsibility and ownership for new ideas among colleagues. The master class will cover: How to articulate the relevance of strategy, change or institutional initiatives. Personal propositions: how to speak with credibility and authority. Identifying and communicating an effective and relevant message. Identifying audience motivations and levels of commitment. Managing the tipping point between cooperation and disenfranchisement. The secrets of engagement: what really works. Managing and responding to audience reactions. Critical calls to action: what should the audience do next? Participants will be encouraged to relate the learning to their work place challenges and opportunities and to develop practical ideas and plans to address any future influencing and communication challenges for which they need to plan. The learning and delivery style will be interactive, with delegate discussion and participation throughout. Outcomes: By the end of the master class you will have: Developed an understanding of the key success factors for effective influencing skills and communication. Understood the motivations that drive people, plus how to develop and adapt the content of the communications and key messages, accordingly. Explored practical techniques to build authority and credibility and to articulate the relevance of the message to the audience. 14 Facilitators Carolyn Blunt, Real Results Training Ltd Real Results Training is a learning and development consultancy that has an excellent reputation for designing and delivering bespoke training solutions. Established in 2003 and based in Lancashire, they provide subject expert trainers with a fun, engaging, delivery style to organisations all over the UK. Carolyn Blunt is the lead consultant and founder of Real Results Training. Carolyn has a long background in people development, having begun her career in Fujitsu Services Ltd, the world s third largest IT company, with responsibility for Training and Development for Northern England and Ireland. Carolyn has worked with many other organisations, including many HEI s to develop people in communication, leadership, teamwork and customer service. Alan Ross, ARK Associates Alan Ross is an executive coach, development specialist and yoga teacher. Before setting up his company ARK Associates in 1994, Alan was a company director in blue chip companies, Smiths Crisps, Scottish & Newcastle and Booker. Alan s uses learning and experience developed over 20 years and drawing from a range of experts ancient and modern, e.g. Gallwey, Covey, Whitmore, Kline, to develop his own framework called thinking, listening and communicating. He is particularly adept at enabling leaders and their teams to reflect on their own key skills and capabilities - which can enhance, or sometimes detract from, their performance in today s fast-changing world. Alan is a versatile and mindful coach and facilitator, having worked with a wide range of client nationalities, personalities and businesses such as ACAS, BT, Eversheds, HBOS, R&A St Andrews, Siemens, Scottish Water. Dave Algeo, Algeo Training Ltd Dave Algeo, the Stress(ed) Guru, has worked with numerous organisations including Universities, delivering workshops aimed at raising performance and lowering stress. More than 20 years of experience in policing and leadership have provided Dave with a unique take on achieving mission through people. His practical, down to earth approach, with a touch of humour, has earned him a strong reputation as an effective facilitator and expert in this field. Dave is noted for his engaging and impactful sessions which build in creative methods to equip people with the tools and the mind-set required to perform better and influence a positive working culture. Tom Irvine, The Leadership Foundation Tom Irvine BSc PGCE MEd MBA Tom is Director of Consultancy at the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. He has been supporting leaders as they seek to work creatively and innovate for more than 20 years. His organisational consulting work is strongly oriented towards creativity and he enjoys to flip major strategic issues for clients to discover novel and innovative solutions. Tom also works with top teams from a number of UK universities. 14

15 Rosemary Stamp, The Leadership Foundation Rosemary Stamp MA MSc MIoD MCIPR FAUA FCIM Rosemary is a policy advisor, leadership mentor and strategic communications specialist. Her wideranging career has spanned the public and private sectors, encompassing leadership within higher education services through to pioneering roles in global commercial communications agencies and strategic consultancy services. Rosemary s specialist master classes have been filmed for the Open University. Alastair Work, The Leadership Foundation Alastair Work. MA FCIPD Alastair is an organisational development consultant with considerable experience of Higher Education, having previously held posts as Personnel Officer, Academic Registrar, Vice-Principal and University Secretary. During his time at the University of St Andrews, he used adaptive leadership techniques to drive considerable internal organisational change in a context of a fluid set of demands and a turbulent external environment. Over the past eight years, Alastair has worked in-house with over 50 Universities and a considerable proportion of his work with these institutions has involved supporting leaders and managers to read their institutions as complex organisations and to evolve techniques and approaches that are appropriate to the situations they face. 15
