3 MINDFULNESS FOR HIGHER PERFORMANCE Programme outline Mindfulness the capacity for managing attention and awareness in the moment with the intention to engage with it in an open mindset involves attending to the situation at hand in ways that are purposeful and flexible. The ability to be in the present moment releases the mind from automatic or habitual thought patterns that can generate tunnel vision and defensiveness, and ultimately burnout. Instead, mindfulness facilitates more innovative, productive and creative responses to new and complex challenges. This programme is based on the latest scientific evidence of what mindfulness is and how it can help cultivate the primary elements of sustained attention and awareness management. By participating in this programme, executives will learn how to raise their own resilience and make better decisions, and manage organisations well in today s complex world. The programme will take you on a journey of developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence using evidencebased mindfulness techniques. It will give you a comprehensive set of tools to develop clarity of thought both for yourself and for those you lead in your organisation. CRANFIELD RESEARCH The course facilitators are collaborating on an ongoing scientific mindfulness research programme at Cranfield University s School of Management. This research informs their mindfulness teaching, and helps them explore new ways of bringing mindfulness to people and organisations in a sustainable, compassionate, and effective way.

4 MINDFULNESS FOR HIGHER PERFORMANCE WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The programme focus is on the key domains of personal resilience and emotional intelligence, including self and social awareness, selfregulation and perspective-taking. We will integrate mindfulness practice with insights about the scientific foundation of the course content as well as outline and discuss with you how you can apply this to your personal leadership in your organisation and to team development. WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF IT? In this two-day residential course, you will follow a structured process that helps develop your attentional capacity, selfawareness and situational awareness. 5 PROGRAMME LEADERS Dr Jutta Tobias has about 15 years work experience in business consultancy, organisational development, and capacity-building in six countries on three continents. Dr Tobias serves on the faculty at Cranfield University School of Management. Her current research and teaching portfolio is focused on improving people s performance at work, by helping individuals develop their self-management skills, overcome obstacles in managing change and facilitating organisational learning, and improve managerial decision-making. She teaches on the full-time and executive MBA as well as on several executive and full-time Masters programmes at Cranfield. Per Norrgren is a Visiting Tutor at The Cranfield School of Management. He is currently engaged in a programme of research at Cranfield with Jutta Tobias, assessing the impact of mindfulness training on the performance, resilience, and decision-making of MBA students. Per trained as a mindfulness teacher with Bangor University Centre for Mindfulness and Breathworks CIC, and complies with the good practice guidelines of the UK Network for Mindfulness-based teachers. Having experienced the life-changing impact of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme for himself, Per has been passionately studying, training, facilitating and delivering mindfulness training in a variety of settings ever since.

6 MINDFULNESS FOR HIGHER PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY OF APPROACH The programme is highly interactive and trains people to optimise performance, develop leadership skills and increase well-being. Each session is approximately one-third content and two-thirds skill training. Skill training includes individual, paired and group exercise consisting of attention training, active listening with verbal feedback, written exercises and practices to cultivate effective emotion regulation. As leaders become more senior they have to deal with difficult situations that require them to balance multiple considerations. Often there is no one right answer. In these circumstances you can t afford to dismiss perspectives simply because they are inconvenient or you disagree with them. 10 CRANFIELD MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT CENTRE The Mindfulness for Higher Performance programme is held twice a year at the Cranfield Management Development Centre (CMDC). Full board accommodation (if required) and all sessions are usually held in this conference centre which has an established reputation for being one of the best centres in the country. Located in a rural setting on the Bedfordshire/Buckinghamshire border, CMDC is conveniently situated to the M1 motorway, railway stations and major airports. We even have an airport on site!
