DEAN, BARNEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS The University of Hartford invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Barney School of Business. Comprising seven distinctive schools and colleges, the University of Hartford is a dynamic, comprehensive, independent institution known for the diversity, breadth, and imagination of its academic programs. The University seeks an entrepreneurial, innovative, and visionary leader as the next Dean of the Barney School of Business to join the academic leadership team of the institution at an exciting time in the University s development. Having just completed a marketing and branding exercise, a comprehensive program review and prioritization process, a full-time faculty compensation study, and a libraries master planning exercise, the University is now preparing for strategic planning to integrate these important planning efforts. As a result, the next Dean of the Barney School of Business will be poised to articulate and promote the school s distinctiveness, build upon its many strengths, grow enrollment, increase support from external stakeholders, and extend the School s reach into the business community throughout the region. Location The University of Hartford is a private institution with its West Hartford main campus on 350 scenic acres just four miles from the State Capitol and a new performing arts campus in Hartford s North End. The University of Hartford is located in two towns, Bloomfield and West Hartford, and one city, Hartford, in Connecticut. Connecticut is the southernmost U.S. state in New England and, according to the 2010 Census, is the 29 th most populous and 4 th most densely populated of the 50 states. It is named for the Connecticut River, a major U.S. river that bisects the state and flows into Long Island Sound thus giving the state a strong maritime tradition. Connecticut s most traditional industry is financial services including insurance companies in Hartford and hedge funds in Fairfield County. In the
Page Census Connecticut had the highest per capita income and the highest median household income in the nation. Hartford is the state s capital city. The nation s oldest insurance company still operates in the city as the Hartford Insurance Company. Hartford is also home to many of the nation's largest insurance companies, including Aetna and Travelers, and is often referred to as the Insurance Capital of the World. Bloomfield is a picturesque residential suburb of Hartford. It features rural beauty, abundant land, and a highly educated work force. Cigna and MetLife insurance companies are located in Bloomfield. West Hartford, another Hartford suburb, is a destination for businesses and families because of outstanding municipal services and its top rated schools. The town has won many recent accolades including: Top 10 "Best Cities in the Nation for the Next Decade" (Kiplinger s Personal Finance Magazine); Top 10 Great Cities for Raising Families (Kiplinger s Personal Finance Magazine ); One of the Coolest Suburbs Worth a Visit (TravelandLeisure.com); One of the top 100 Best Places to Live in the Nation (CNNMoney.com); U.S. News & World Report ranked both Conard and Hall High Schools among the top 10 public high schools in Connecticut, and bestowed the gold medal distinction for ranking in the top 500 of schools nationwide; and Conard and Hall High Schools ranked at the top of Newsweek's America's Best High Schools. The University The University of Hartford sees itself as a private university with a public purpose, that prepares students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to thrive and be engaged in a pluralistic, complex world. The institution values the personal attention associated with a small college environment, enhanced by the expertise, breadth, and intellectual excitement of a university. Diversity of every sort is integral to its academic mission, along with connections to local, national and global communities. As a result, the University offers a breadth of academic programs available at few universities of its size while committing to a culture of individual support and attention for each student. With approximately 7,000 students, 4,500 of whom are full-time
Page 3 undergraduate students, the campus is large enough to achieve the goals of a university while maintaining the feel of a smaller residential college. The University s seven schools and colleges provide opportunities for career-ready education through the 84 bachelor s degree programs, 11 associate s degrees, and 38 graduate programs. The University s student-faculty ratio is 13:1 and 87 percent of full-time faculty hold terminal degrees in their fields. The total minority representation of undergraduates is 34 percent. Of full-time undergraduate students, 49 percent are female and 51 percent male; over 38 percent are from Connecticut and 5 percent are international students. The University traces its origins to 1957 when the three long-established institutions of higher learning the Hartford Art School, Hillyer College, and the Hartt College of Music were joined under a new charter as the University of Hartford. Over time, the following schools and colleges were established within the University: the Barney School of Business; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture; and the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. The Hartford community played an instrumental role in the founding of the University and remains a critical partner in its current life. United Health Care, Aetna, United Technologies, The Hartford, Travelers and ESPN are all large employers in the Hartford region. There are 14 Fortune 500 Companies in Connecticut. Three (United Technologies, Aetna, and Hartford Financial Services Group) are located in Hartford; one (Cigna) is located in Bloomfield, and a fifth (Stanley Black and Decker) is located in nearby New Britain. Beyond the campus, a wide variety of institutions create a lively cultural environment, including the Connecticut Science Center, the Mark Twain House and Museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the Connecticut Historical Society, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and the Hartford Stage Company. The Greater Hartford area also hosts a number of institutions of higher education, including Trinity College, the University of Connecticut West Hartford Campus, Hartford Seminary, University of Saint Joseph, Wesleyan University, and the Connecticut State University system. A wide range of University institutions and programs serve the greater Hartford community. These include the Upper Albany/Main Street initiative, the University s Entrepreneurial Center, the Joseloff Gallery, the Silpe Gallery, Lincoln Theatre, The Hartt School Community Division, the President s College, the Center for Social Research, Educational Main Street, the Center for Community Service, the Women s
Page 4 Education Leadership Fund (WELFund), and the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies. The Barney School of Business Overview The Barney School of Business ( Barney ) was established in 1958 as an independent college within the newly formed University of Hartford to provide business education and business graduates to firms in the Greater Hartford area. Today s Barney School strives to become a leader in career-focused business education as it pursues its mission to develop leaders and decision makers who are globally aware and socially responsible. In addition to institutional accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Barney School is fully accredited by AACSB- International and, in 2011, was awarded extended maintenance of accreditation. The Barney School of Business strives to prepare its students by: Creating a student-focused learning environment that emphasizes effective, high quality baccalaureate and masters level teaching and learning; Engaging in a broad range of scholarly activities to improve the practice of business management, enhance and strengthen teaching, and provide intellectual stimulation to faculty; and Maintaining strong relationships with business, nonprofit, and government entities to facilitate their interaction with students and faculty in a wide variety of activities. Currently, 600 undergraduate and 400 graduate students are enrolled in the Barney School. While the majority of the undergraduate students are from ten Northeast and mid-atlantic states, a growing number of students come from around the nation and the world. Most undergraduate students pursue their degrees on a full-time basis in one of the Barney School s six major areas of study: accounting, economics/finance, insurance/finance, entrepreneurial studies, management, and marketing. In addition, Barney has a rapidly growing and promising minor in the field of actuarial science.
Page 5 In contrast, most graduate students live and work in the local area, while approximately 10 percent are international students. Barney s domestic students typically pursue parttime studies in the MBA, MSAT, or one-year MBA programs, while the international students usually pursue MBA degrees on a full-time basis. Core, breadth, capstone and elective courses are also offered in the online environment to better serve working professionals. Barney School students have opportunities to pursue excellence through academics and extracurricular activities, and their academic accomplishments are recognized worldwide through Barney s participation in academic honor societies such as Beta Gamma Sigma (Barney boasts a Premier Chapter) and Beta Alpha Psi. Students enhance their leadership skills through involvement in undergraduate and graduate leadership councils. In addition, Barney s commitment to promoting global awareness through short-term travel abroad programs, a major international business plan competition, and service learning through the Upper Albany Main Street Program reflect an interest in promoting a lifelong sense of global citizenship and commitment to improving the communities in which its graduates live and work. The Barney School is proud of the many accomplishments of its 18,000 distinguished alumni. Each year, the School selects two alumni who have best exemplified its mission as inductees into the Barney School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame. The School is indebted to the R.C. Knox Center of Excellence for providing significant support for the development programs in the field of Risk Management and Insurance. The Barney School recently received a gift for the establishment of the Corporate Risk Solutions, an endowed annual lecture. The Barney School has 40 outstanding full-time faculty members from around the world and a select group of adjunct faculty, who are typically working professionals and managers in the local business community. Programs of Study Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Program As part of the career-focused business education branding for the Barney School, undergraduate students benefit from a Career-Ready business education focus. The integration of five key areas enhances the students general awareness of business, focuses their career path, requires them to build a professional resume, provides for real-world experience in their major of choice, and calls for the student to demonstrate
Page 6 proficiency in a project providing practical preparation for entry into the business world. Students receive one-on-one academic counseling with an advisor in their major area of study throughout their academic career. BSBA Students may pursue a minor both within the business school and in various disciplines across the University of Hartford. Students are encouraged to consider the academic breadth of options available to them throughout the University. Options for enhancing their overall academic experience are encouraged through international study abroad opportunities, clubs, and organizations within the business school and across the campus, and exposure to social responsibility through service learning and college-specific sustainability efforts. Master of Business Administration Program The Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program at the Barney School is a selfpaced, part-time program of study that is primarily tailored to meet the needs of the working professionals in the Greater Central Connecticut area. The four components to the MBA curriculum are core courses, breadth courses, electives, and a capstone course. In the core, students begin learning the basic functional areas of business. The six breadth courses represent integrative, cross-functional topics that build upon the core and give the Barney MBA its distinctiveness. Students may select four electives from six graduate areas within the Barney School accounting, finance, insurance, management, marketing, and real estate or from other graduate programs at the University. The program of study concludes with an integrative capstone course. Students can also expand their global awareness by selecting from a number of shortterm courses abroad to places such as Berlin, Dubai, Italy, Paris or Taiwan. In addition, principles of social responsibility are infused in the core, breadth, electives, and capstone courses in the curriculum. The MBA students are quite diverse; 43 percent of the students are women, and the average MBA student is 31 years old. Most MBA students live within 50 miles of the campus, but some commute from Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New Hampshire. On average, international students make up ten percent of the student body in the MBA program. One-Year Cohort MBA Program The Barney School One-Year Cohort MBA is structured as Saturday-only classes and offers students the option to obtain their MBA in just 12 months. After satisfying the six
Page 7 core courses, online or on-site, students can enter the One-Year Cohort MBA Program. Students complete the six MBA breadth courses and the capstone and have the option to pursue electives in either quantitative or general management disciplines. Students in the One-Year Cohort MBA are motivated and experienced working professionals. Small classroom sizes allow students to excel in intimate, academicallyrich environments led by distinguished and dedicated faculty. The average age of students in this program is 38. Forty percent are women, and most live within a 50-mile radius of the campus. Excellence in Engineering and Management The Excellence in Engineering and Management (E2M) program is the first dual-degree program in Connecticut in engineering and management, enabling full- and part-time graduate students to earn both a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA.) by completing a total of 63 credits, 18 fewer credits than if the degrees were pursued separately. The program is a distinctive, three-way partnership between the Barney School of Business, the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture, and select businesses in Greater Hartford. Coursework at the Barney School includes applied projects, for which students formulate marketing and business plans for area companies. Applicants must apply and be accepted to the graduate programs of both schools to participate in this program. Once enrolled, students must complete all coursework in both schools in order to obtain the degrees. MSAT Program The MSAT program began as the Master of Science in Professional Accounting (MSPA) in 1972 and is the oldest of the masters programs in accounting in the area. Its counterpart, the Master of Science in Taxation (MST) began a few years later and existed with the MSPA until 2002, when the two programs were merged shortly after the Barney School achieved initial AACSB-International accreditation. The program is offered in a traditional evening format that runs throughout the year, with two distinct tracks of Financial and Assurance Services or Taxation. The MSAT attracts three distinct student populations. The first, which represents half of the students in the program, are recent college graduates who are looking to complete the courses required to achieve the Certified Public Accounting designation that requires at least 150 hours of education. Another group, about 25 percent of the
Page 8 students, are working professionals in the accounting field, many already certified, who are seeking professional growth and advancement by obtaining a graduate degree. The remaining 25 percent are students who are interested in starting a new career in the accounting field. Advisory Board. The Barney School has a 20-member Board of Visitors, comprised of prominent business leaders and professionals, many of whom are alumni of the School, to provide advice to the Dean on a wide range of issues. They also serve as ambassadors and advocates for the School in the professional arena and the surrounding community. The Next Dean of the Barney School of Business As the Chief Executive Officer of the Barney School of Business, the Dean provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership and reports directly to the Provost. The Dean is supported by an Associate Dean; an Associate Dean for Finance and Technology; an Assistant Dean; the chairs of three departments (Accounting and Taxation; Economics, Finance, Insurance; Management and Marketing); and office support staff. In addition, the Dean works collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Barney Board of Visitors to cultivate donors and secure resources to support student scholarships and programmatic excellence. Opportunities for the Future At this critical stage of transition, the School looks forward to an energetic and visionary leader to address both opportunities and challenges over the next several years as it seeks to strengthen further its quality and its service to students, to the business community, and to the University of Hartford. Following are the key opportunities and challenges awaiting the next dean: Envisioning the Barney School s Future. The Barney School will benefit from innovative and strategic thinking about its mission, markets, programs, outreach, and services, as it tackles the competitive and challenging environment facing all of higher education. The new Dean will have a key leadership role to play, working as a catalyst with the entire Barney School community and the University of Hartford leadership, to refine an ambitious and compelling vision and set the course for its implementation. The Dean should, along with faculty and others, sharpen and develop distinctive elements of the Barney School s programs and work collaboratively to communicate the strengths of
Page 9 the School. The Dean will have the opportunity to lead the Barney School through the execution of an entrepreneurial vision as the University articulates its key strategic focus for the future. Growing Enrollment, Retention, and Student Engagement. The next Dean will act strategically in the years ahead and will make increasing the School s enrollment at the undergraduate and graduate levels a high priority. In addition, the Dean, in collaboration with faculty, will identify opportunities for distinctive new programs and will target existing programs for growth and development. Additionally, the next Dean will be challenged to recruit and retain talented and diverse domestic and international students, provide for their academic and social needs, and create an environment of high student engagement. Developing New Resources. The realization of the School s vision and key goals is challenged by limited resources. The next Dean will work with Institutional Advancement to expand current efforts in order to establish an outstanding record of seeking and obtaining new private resources particularly through effective linkages with Barney alumni and the broader business community. Enhancing Academic Excellence. The Barney School seeks to enhance further the quality, value, and recognition of its programs and faculty. The incoming Dean will ensure the continuing enhancement of academic quality and has an opportunity to engage faculty in developing innovative programs and services that attract the strongest students. The Dean will also seek to further recruit, retain, and develop outstanding and diverse faculty including executives in residence. Raising the Profile of the School. The next Dean will be expected to develop relationships with the Hartford business community and beyond to further expand the Barney School s reputation regionally and nationally. Of particular importance will be building partnerships and working closely with stakeholders, which may also enrich the student experience by providing enhanced internship opportunities and deeper professional networks. Developing University-wide Collaborations. The University offers many opportunities for the new Dean to develop close working relationships with other deans and senior leaders at the University of Hartford to facilitate mutual opportunities, build interdisciplinary programs and partnerships, and support the Provost and the President in enhancing the academic strength and accomplishments of the entire University.
Page 10 The Position and Qualifications.
