2 Strategic Plan UNCP School of Business Oversight and Input The Strategic Planning Task Force of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke s School of Business provides oversight for the strategic planning efforts within the School. As part of the most recent strategic planning cycle, information was collected from a variety of School of Business stakeholders to lay the foundation for formulating strategic goals and objectives. These stakeholder groups included UNCP administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and School of Business Board of Business Advisors. Mission The School of Business strives to provide each student an outstanding business education. Vision The University of North Carolina at Pembroke School of Business provides high-quality academic programs in accordance with the needs of its student population and service region. Its diverse faculty is known for their pedagogical, scholarly, and professional excellence, and its graduates for the exceptional skills and attitudes they bring to the workplace. Both faculty and students serve as good citizens of the university community and as partners to area businesses with which they work to maintain a vital local economy. The School has a viable financial strategy resulting in some degree of financial independence. Core Values The School of Business values: Internationalization to prepare students for a competitive global environment. Diversity to enrich personal growth and enhance the learning experience. Preparing students for ethical decision-making as business leaders. Educational excellence integrating conceptual and practical knowledge across disciplines. Scholarship to benefit our students education. A personal learning environment where each student s success matters. 3 Strategic Goals ( ) The University of North Carolina at Pembroke School of Business will: 1. Provide academic programs that meet or exceed AACSB International standards, offered in a variety of delivery modes to serve the needs of our region and prepare students for successful business careers. 2. Develop and implement strategies to recruit new students as well as to foster successful academic experiences and career preparation for continuing students. 3. Foster partnerships, connections, and communication between the UNCP School of Business and other entities within the university community. 4. Foster partnerships, connections, and communication between the UNCP School of Business and the local, national, and international academic and business communities. 5. Contribute to the economic development of the region. 6. Attain additional non-state revenue for the School of Business to support student scholarships and faculty development. Academic Quality and Delivery Objectives Provide academic programs that meet or exceed AACSB International standards, offered in a variety of delivery modes to serve the needs of our region and prepare students for successful business careers Secure and maintain AACSB accreditation. Provide a competitive environment for recruiting outstanding and diverse faculty. Provide professional development activities for faculty that promote both pedagogical and professional excellence. Promote scholarship and research activities among faculty members and students (both undergraduate and graduate). Incorporate a greater focus on internationalization and differing cultures within the school s curricula. Implement a quality assurance plan for instruction (assurance of learning), including online instruction. Continue as a university leader in the development and implementation of online courses and programs as well as offering courses at remote sites. Implement flexible program types and delivery methods that meet the needs of various constituents (e.g., weekend, summer, online, and hybrid cohort)) 4

Recruitment and Student Success Objectives Develop and implement strategies to recruit new students as well as to foster successful academic experiences and career preparation for continuing students Encourage student academic and career success through changes in pedagogy, curricula, advising, and student support. Develop and implement strategies that ensure that students complete their degrees in an effective and efficient manner. With assistance from Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Studies, Distance Education, and International Programs, develop recruitment strategies aimed at specific populations of potential students Develop and implement strategies to recruit current UNCP students who have not yet declared a business major or minor Increase student engagement within the School of Business and the University as a means to improve student retention Develop specializations in the MBA program (e.g.; military focused; Executive MBA; Health Care Management and Finance; Financial Services; Real Estate Management) and identify new methods of delivering the program (e.g. online, weekend, executive, hybrid). 3. and 4. Partnerships and Connections Objectives Foster partnerships, connections, and communication between the UNCP School of Business and other entities within the university community (3). As a way to connect students to businesses, encourage stronger student connections with the Small Business Technology and Development Center (SBTDC) and with the School of Business Thomas Family Center for Entrepreneurship. Foster an understanding of the University structure, resources, and opportunities among Business faculty and Business students, and increase participation in University affairs by both groups. Partner with other departments at the university to propose joint courses or programs In cooperation with the Division of Information Technology, develop a strategic plan for the purchase, support, and maintenance of technological hardware and software. 5

6 Foster partnerships, connections, and communication between the UNCP School of Business and the local, national, and international academic and business communities (4). Faculty will form stronger connections with the Regional Center, the Small Business Technology and Development Center, and with the School of Business Thomas Family Center for Entrepreneurship (TFCE) as a way to connect faculty to businesses. Connect students with successful business professionals, especially alumni, through a guest speaker series and through emphasizing alumni success stories on the school s webpage. Develop and promote a more robust internship program. Invite a greater number of national and international firms to recruit at UNCP. Foster an understanding and appreciation of community service among both Business faculty and Business students. Seek opportunities to partner with local community colleges that would benefit area students and on programs that would transition students from the community college to the university. Establish School of Business Student Clubs (e.g. Accounting Students Association, Finance and Investment Club) and chapters of national student organizations (SHRM, SIFE). 5. Economic Development Objectives Contribute to the economic development of the region As part of a course project or internship, enlist students to aid in local economic development by providing services to area small businesses. Provide faculty and student resources, upon request, to assist in revitalizing the town of Pembroke The Dean, Executive-in-Residence, and other faculty will participate in Chamber of Commerce events in the University s service area. 6. Financial Strategies Objectives Attain additional non-state revenue for the School of Business to support student scholarships and faculty development. Secure scholarship donations to assist students with financial needs. Assist local businesses to obtain mutually beneficial grants. Develop fee-based certificate programs (e.g., Six Sigma, SAS, etc.). Develop fee-based executive education programs (on campus, in-house, or online). 6

7 Foster a close relationship with the Regional Center to develop continuing education courses. Foster a close relationship with the UNCP Office of Advancement to actively seek unrestricted external funds (e.g. faculty development, equipment, databases, etc. 7
