2 The Department of Accountancy of National Taipei University (), ranked among the most competitive accounting programs in Taiwan, has been preparing students for careers in accounting, taxation, and governmental organizations since With the excellent tradition from its predecessor, College of Law and Business of National Chung Hsing University, and the former department leadership, today's department offers degrees at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels. The majority of our professors have received their doctorates from some of the most prestigious doctoral programs in the US, Japan, and Taiwan. Our faculty is our main pride and resource. The faculty has not only excelled in research and publication, but has also been actively involved in service and consultation for business enterprises, governmental agencies, national recruitment examinations, and financial accounting/auditing standards setting in Taiwan. Besides top-notch faculty, we have students from diverse background through very competitive entrance examination. Our accounting major courses, coupled with the integrated college core and a required broad range of subjects, prepare students for lifelong learning and positions of professional leadership. The combination of a strong curriculum and talented students has earned 's accounting program the designation, "key school" by recruiters such as international associated CPA firms and local listed companies. Our graduate programs have continuously won respectful recognition from professional and academic fields. To meet the challenge of an ever-increasing international competitiveness, our mission is to maintain a leadership position in accounting education and research. We seek to achieve our objective with a high-quality group of students, a strong and diverse faculty, and close ties with accounting and business communities. 4 History of the Department National Taipei University () was officially renamed and established in February The new main campus is located in San-Hsia, a suburban city near Taipei with bountiful beauties of traditional culture. In retrospect, the University has undergone several stages of development to conform to the nation's economic development and advancement. The establishment of Department of Accountancy can be traced back as early as 1949 in the era of Junior College of Administration. After several stages with different names in the following chronological orders, Taiwan Provincial College of Business and Laws, Taiwan Provincial Chung Hsing University, National Chung Hsing University, and today's National Taipei University, the Department of Accountancy has developed comprehensive degree programs tailored to the goals of different types of students. The graduates of our department hold positions of leadership in a diverse array of careers, including both the public and private sectors. They include partners at international CPA firms, chief financial officers at major industrial firms, high-ranking governmental officials, management consultants, and presidents of their own companies. Our alumni have been our major pride. The alumni association has continuously provided generous financial support necessary to develop an outstanding accounting program. Students are also benefited in both the financing and employment opportunities. Today the Department offers undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting, taxation, and other business-related areas. The Bachelor of Accountancy prepares students for professional employment in accounting and taxation. Our graduate programs are designed to meet the different needs of students: Master of Accountancy for new graduates; Executive Master of Accounting for experienced professionals who strive for greater professional stature and advancement; The Doctor of Philosophy program for students with an aim to pursuing careers in academia.

6 Faculty Specialties Currently the Department has sixteen full-time professors as well as nearly twenty experienced adjunct professors from academia, business and government. Our accounting professors hold advanced degrees in accounting, taxation, and economics. They provide a supportive educational environment and interact closely with the students. Not only are they distinguished in knowledge creation, but also they excel in knowledge transmission. The classrooms are enriched with their experiences in academic research as well as services and consulting in business and government.

9 Graduate Programs The Master of Accountancy (MA) prepares gradates for careers in public accounting, industry and government. The objectives of the program include developing the sound theoretical, technical, and analytical skills necessary to succeed in the accounting profession. As students are also trained research methods and seminars on various accounting theories, some graduates select to pursue the doctoral program. The MA program consists of forty-two credit hours plus the completion of a master's thesis. The following four courses are required of all students: Advanced Accounting Theory, Advanced Management Accounting, Advanced Auditing, and Research Methods. Students have the opportunities to study accounting in greater depth than is typically provided in an undergraduate accounting. The Executive Master of Accounting (EMA) degree is required for students with a minimum of four years of work experience. The program consists of thirty-three credit hours plus the completion of a master's thesis. The required courses are the same as the MA program. Basically the program allows students to choose from a wide range of business subjects involving analysis, planning, management, and reporting. The EMA program endeavors to establish in each graduate a potential for career advancement into the highest levels of professional accounting and management.

11 Graduate Programs The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Accounting program at trains researchers to investigate the variety of accounting issues. The program emphasizes a thorough understanding of the theoretical foundations and methodological approaches utilized by our doctoral students. Students are required to develop a command of research methods and philosophy of science to be capable of publishing high-quality research and of teaching at prestigious universities. Upon enrollment, students have to map out the Study Plan describing how the student's educational interests and objectives will be pursued in the Ph.D. program. All Study Plans must contain the required courses and electives of at least forty credit hours. Each student's Study Plan must be approved by the Committee on Doctoral Studies in the first year of enrollment. All coursework and required comprehensive evaluations must be completed within five years of matriculation. On the dissertation stage, students should demonstrate the ability to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge and analytic methods to the resolution of a research problem. It is also noteworthy that students must meet the Research Presentation/ Publication Requirements before they formally receive the doctoral degree.

13 Undergraduate Program The Bachelor of Accountancy (BA) program is a 140 credithour undergraduate program. Emphasis is placed on preparation, analysis and assurance of financial reporting as well as planning and management of business enterprises. It also prepares students for future accountancy graduate work. To further expand and enrich competence in today's dynamic business environment, each student is required to select at least fifteen credit hours in the following fields as his/her secondary area of specialty: electronic commerce, taxation and law, finance, and information management. Currently, the day-time program of the BA degree are for full-time students while the night division program are for people working full-time who want to pursue their studies at a slower rate of about five years.

16 Financial Aid As the Department has long developed and maintained close ties with the accounting and business communities, funding is available from a variety of organizations outside the University to assist students in financing their studies. Recently, our students have received funding from T.N. Song Foundation, Memorial Education Foundation of Mr. Lin Bing-Chang (the former Board Chairman of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu), Fubon Group, Rotary Club, and numerous scholarships from large, mid-sized CPA firms and local commercial banks. In addition, our Accounting Alumni Association has continuously provided strong financial support whenever possible. There are also other financial supports which take the form of research assistant positions with accounting faculty and are available for virtually all graduate students. Many undergraduate students are eligible for part-time administrative assistants subject to the needs of the Department. For students interested in off-campus part-time internship, we have many employers who know what our students have to offer sending job descriptions to be posted in our departmental bulletin board. Our students gain valuable working knowledge through internship programs and part-time employment.

17 Career Development As we have been designated as "key schools" by international CPA firms and many listed companies, our graduates have possessed advantages of employment. For instances, the Big Four CPA Firms, including Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, KPMG, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Ernst & Young, have all held annual On-Campus Recruiting Program for our undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, recognizing the central role accounting plays in management, employers from medium and large organizations of many types of industries have also actively participated in recruitment. Our students have all gained decent job positions upon graduation in the private and public sectors. While our students have generally developed the capability of career advancement, some significant portion chooses to pursue further academic degrees. The performance results of our students in the entrance examination for graduate programs of various universities have been impressive. This further demonstrates the effective learning process of our students with our Department. The Accounting Alumni Association has provided thousands of our graduates with rewarding connections to fellow alumni and to the development of the department.

18 Mission and Future Perspectives The Department of Accountancy at is dedicated to maintaining a leadership position in accounting education and research. With the Department's tradition of excellence in accounting education in Taiwan, our main goal is to surpass our domestic competitors and to develop an international focus in the era of globalization. To achieve this end, we actively pursue the following strategies to further enhance our reputation and competitiveness. First, we will continue to effectively initiate and organize domestic and international conferences/seminars to address contemporary significant accountingrelated issues and take a lead in providing the platform for policy formulation of government and business enterprises. In addition, we have been and will continue to strive for substantial international exchange programs with foreign prestigious universities. Through such intense interaction, we gain valuable insight and knowledge towards being an outstanding institution. Second, to construct the core competence of our department, we provide our faculty with various resources to create and disseminate knowledge through leading academic and professional journals and symposia. Among other things, we actively raise research funds from business communities and our accounting alumni to facilitate research collaboration between our faculty and foreign outstanding scholars, as well as the utilization of specific databases and software packages. Moreover, we will continue to encourage and assist our faculty to develop and maintain strong ties with professional accounting and business communities and governmental organizations. This especially enables our young faculty to cultivate their leadership potential to be substantiated in the future. Finally, we will strive for the innovation of accounting education. Not only will we keep close monitors on the most recent trends of accounting education, but also we will develop the appropriate accounting programs tailored to different needs of degrees. Our curriculum planning will integrate the prominent characteristics of distinguished international universities with today's dynamic and challenging business operating environment. This would comply with our mission of providing a positive value-added education that enables our students to attain their professional objectives through applied academic programs, research, and service to academic and professional organizations. Once again, we believe that we will continue to excel in accounting education.
