9 History of the Square 2 Originally known as St. Peter s Field, the square was built on the southern edge of Manchester in the late 18th Century and soon became the focus of the town s intellectual and cultural activity. In 1907 St. Peter s Church was demolished and the Central Library and Town Hall Extension built from The extensive renovations to the square and its historic buildings combined with the completion of Two St. Peter s Square will become an important milestone in the square s history THE LOCATION

11 The Future of St. Peter s Square The 21st Century vision for St. Peter s Square is for it to become a world-class defining component in Manchester s Civic and new business quarter; a wholly integrated, pedestrianised square which lives and breathes dynamism, confidence and creativity. Manchester City Council has invested 185 million to create a new public square for the future as well as a transformation and redevelopment of Library Walk, Central Library and Town Hall Extension.
