These skills prepare students fr high-quality, high-tech degree prgrams. Evidence is emerging that the effective use f technlgy cmbined with exemplary teaching can psitively impact student academic utcmes. The 2009 HP Innvatins in Educatin grants fr secndary schl districts (USA) fund schl districts t launch innvative pilt initiatives that supprt the administratrs and teachers respnsible fr student success in math and science in middle schls and/r high schls. HP is inviting prpsals frm schl districts that are cmmitted t explring the innvatins that are pssible at the intersectin f teaching, learning, and technlgy. The HP Innvatins in Educatin grant recipients will becme a glbal netwrk f secndary schl educatrs arund the wrld wh are designing the future f secndary educatin. Each grant supprts prgram imprvement in fur key areas: Leadership Capacity creating a netwrk f schl administratrs and key teachers wh implement innvative appraches t curriculum, instructin, and the use f technlgy t enhance math/science learning Digital Learning Envirnments using technlgy t fundamentally redesign the learning experience in ways that lead t increased student engagement and academic success; can include innvatins in nline learning, virtual wrlds, gaming fr learning, and simulatins The Secndary Student Design & Research Experience making math and science real and relevant by invlving secndary students in design and research challenges that address real needs in sciety; can include lcal and/r glbal service learning High-Tech Career Awareness engaging administratrs, teachers, and students in ways that increase awareness and interest in high-tech cllege degree prgrams and careers

In 2009, HP will select exemplary prpsals frm apprximately 25 schl districts acrss the US. This request fr prpsals is penly available t any public r accredited private schl district r schl system that serves at least 2000 secndary schl (grades 6-12) students. Grants will be awarded n a cmpetitive basis. Only ne prpsal per district will be accepted. Institutin eligibility, prpsal review cnsideratins, applicatin instructins, and key due dates are listed belw. Prpsals must be submitted nline in English, n later than 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time n March 30 th, 2009. Descriptin f the grant award Each 2009 HP Innvatin in Educatin award fr secndary schl districts in the US supprts a district team f 4 administratrs and 8 secndary schl teachers t cnduct pilt prjects at 1 r 2 schl sites. The grant, valued at mre than $270K (list price), includes several elements: Equipment fr each f the 8 Participating Teachers: HP Tablet PC cnvertible laptp with extended life battery HP dck with DVD drive Digital Prjectr A digital cupn fr a free Snapfish phtbk (http://www2.snapfish.cm/strenewphtbks) Equipment fr 4 Participating Administratrs (district & schl site): HP Tablet PC with extended life battery Widescreen Mnitr, dck with DVD drive, keybard, and muse HP Digital Classrms: 30 HP Tablet PCs, strage cart, and digital prjectr Tablet PCs are cnvertible laptps that include a digital pen fr drawing directly n the screen. They are favrite amng students and teachers wh are engaged in teaching and learning subjects that are diagrammatic in nature, such as math, science, and engineering. The five participants shuld include a key district administratr (such as the Asst. Superintendent f Curriculum and Instructin), the district IT directr, a schl site administratr, and 2 lead teachers wh will be participating in using the technlgy in their classrms HP Leadership Online Cmmunity - Each schl district s leadership team will participate in an nline, facilitated cmmunity with ther grant recipients acrss the US. This will enhance the strategic planning fr yur district and prvide an pprtunity t cllabrate with and share prmising practices with ther schl districts ISTE Mentr fr Leadership Team ISTE will prvide each district s Prject Leadership Team with a mentr that wrks with the district thrughut the first schl year Teacher Prfessinal Develpment This HP Innvatin in Educatin grant includes several imprtant prfessinal develpment elements fr the 8 participating teachers. PD Resurces and Mentrs frm ISTE - The Internatinal Sciety fr Technlgy in Educatin (www.iste.rg) will prvide prfessinal develpment resurces and mentrs fr district s teaching team ($600 in resurce credits fr each f the 8 teachers). Participating teachers will wrk in an nline envirnment t imprve their skills and knwledge abut 3 f 11 (v10)

effective technlgy integratin in teaching and learning and align their wrk with the Natinal Educatinal Technlgy Standards (NETS) as they implement their prjects. The prfessinal develpment cmpnent f the grant award includes nine mnths f individual and grup activities centered n the fllwing cmpnents: Team prject implementatin and evaluatin--teams will wrk with their mentr t turn the prject descriptin int an actin plan, including individual team member respnsibilities and measures fr gauging the impact f their prject n teaching and learning. Individualized develpment plans--participants will wrk with their mentr t develp their wn learning plan, chsing resurces ffered thrugh ISTE (bks, articles, nline curses, websites, etc.) that meet their specific gals and needs. Electrnic prtflis-- Participants will build electrnic prtflis f their wrk, dcumenting their prgress in implementing their prject and the results f their learning activities. Actin research, reflectins and reprting--teams will wrk with their mentrs t reflect n the utcmes f their wrk midway thrugh the nine mnths f activities and at the end, t examine hw the team is prgressing thrugh its wrk and t develp next steps. These interim and final reflectins will cmbine with the electrnic prtflis t serve as interim and final grant prject reprts t HP. Online discussins--participants will be able t cnnect with teams frm acrss the U.S. and Canada t discuss cmmn challenges, exchange best practices and learn frm experts in the field f technlgy integratin. DyKnw Getting Started webinar T familiarize teachers with the use f DyKnw Visin sftware fr engaging students and gathering real-time feedback, DyKnw will prvide a Getting Started webinar HP Mbile Calculating Lab Wrkshp T familiarize teachers with the use f HP graphing calculatrs, data lgging, and prbeware, the HP calculatr team will hst a ne day train-the-trainer wrkshp t be held fllwing the Leadership Launch event in Hustn. This award will fund the tw teachers wh are attending the Leadership Launch t stay ne additinal day fr this wrkshp. Natinal Educatin Cmputing Cnference (NECC) Participatin in the NECC cnference in June 2010 - this grant will fund travel and ldging s that tw team representatives may present the first-year results f the prject at a cnference pster sessin that will feature all 25 US grant recipient districts Cash grant ttaling $9,000, payable in tw installments ($7,000 at the beginning f the prject, and then $2,000 after the first prject update reprt and vide is submitted at the end f the first schl year) $500 cash stipends are t be prvided t each f the eight participating teachers ($4,000 ttal) as an acknwledgment f the time and effrt required t change instructinal practice, and time spent meeting with the team f teachers invlved in the grant prject and engaged in prfessinal develpment. The stipends will be awarded t the schl in as part f the initial cash grant installment f $7,000, and must be distributed by the district t the teachers n the prject team. Each teacher 4 f 11 (v10)

can use the stipend fr any purpse he r she chses, and is nt limited t use the stipend fr grant prject-related materials r activities. The stipend is subject t the standard financial plicies f the schl. $5,000 cash award fr the prject team t use t supprt the wrk f the prject, payable in tw installments ($3000 near the beginning f the prject, upn cmpletin f PD plans, and $2000 upn submissin f the first prject update reprt in the April timeframe). The funds can be used t: Cver faculty time, ffsetting the nrmal curse lad, r t share with ther faculty and/r interns supprting the prject Prduce a student-created shrt vide dcumentary that describes hw the prject has changed student learning Purchase additinal prject materials r equipment (like vide equipment r curriculum materials) Cver the csts f a public district-wide celebratin event r receptin at the beginning and/r cnclusin f the first year f the prject Cver miscellaneus travel expenses related t attending cnferences t disseminate best practices that emerge frm the prject Nte: The cash prtin f this grant cmes t the institutin as an unrestricted cash award. HP will nt allw the cash award t be used t finance indirect csts. Eligibility requirements This grant prgram is cmpetitive - nt all applicants will receive an award. T be cnsidered fr a 2009 HP Innvatin in Educatin grant fr secndary schl districts, participating educatin institutins must: Be a public schl district r accredited private schl system that serves a minimum f 2,000 secndary schl students (students in grades 6-12 r 7-12, depending n hw yur district is rganized; can include middle schls, junir high schls, and/r high schls) Be validated as cmpliant with US laws and regulatins Be an rganizatin that is cnsistent with HP's nn-discriminatin plicies and practices. Schl rganizatins are nt eligible if their primary missin is religius, sectarian, discriminatry, plitical, r if the rganizatin discriminates n the basis f race, creed, religin, gender, natinal rigin, sexual rientatin, age, disability, r veteran status. Prpse innvatins that enhance learning in at least ne f the fllwing disciplines: Pre-Engineering Mathematics Science Cmputer Science Describe a prject team that invlves ne r tw schl sites, and includes The district administratr, such as the Assistant Superintendent f Curriculum and Instructin, wh is respnsible fr teaching and learning thrughut the schl district; in a large schl district, this persn may be the Directr f Secndary 5 f 11 (v10)

Educatin, r sme equivalent title The IT Directr wh serves the faculty and students acrss the schl district A lcal schl site administratr fr each participating schl site (up t 2 sites), such as the Principal r lead site administratr respnsible fr curriculum and instructin Up t 8 classrm teachers (frm ne r tw schl sites) wh will be using the technlgy fr teaching ne r mre f the eligible disciplines Have pre-apprved the HP Terms and Cnditins assciated with HP grants Meet the minimum infrastructure requirements t supprt the use f the technlgy Adequate infrastructure (electricity, buildings, internet access, etc.) Existing r planned high-speed wireless cmputing envirnment IT resurces that will be cmmitted t supprt the use f the granted equipment Review criteria T receive an award, a prpsal must prvide exemplary answers t the questins prvided in the HP Request fr Prpsals. Criteria t be used t evaluate the prpsals will include, but will nt be limited t: Primary criteria Prpsal includes plans fr innvatin in all fur dimensins: Leadership Capacity, Digital Learning Envirnments, the Student Design & Research Experiences, and High-Tech Career Awareness. An enthusiastic, cmmitted, and cmplete prject team Prject prpsals must: Clearly describe why this prject is imprtant - what fundamental teaching and learning issues are being addressed thrugh the prject Describe in what ways the granted HP technlgy will be used t address the issues expressed in the why questin abve. Include hw the success will be measured (e.g., have specific plans fr measuring the success f the prject in terms f student learning utcmes such as imprved grades, increased enrllment and retentin, imprved perfrmance n recgnized tests, increased quality f student prject etc.) in cmparisn with baseline data frm the years prir t this prject Have specific plans fr cmmunicating the prject utcmes, n campus and beynd The prject cntributes tward the attainment f the institutin s visin and plans fr brader deplyment f mbile technlgy slutins in the learning envirnment Only ne prpsal per schl district will be accepted. Preference will be given t educatin institutins that: Serve a significant prprtin f under-represented, lw incme r therwise marginalized ppulatins f students Engage partner rganizatins Have a surce f matching funds that will be applied t this prject, shuld it be selected fr funding Prpse prjects that increase the institutin s capacity t ffer prject-based learning experiences fr students engaged in cmmunity service (lcal r abrad). These prgrams are smetimes described as service learning r ther prgrams where students experience the relevance and excitement f applying math & science principles t address real scietal issues. 6 f 11 (v10)

Grant recipient cmmitment (tw years) Innvatin takes time, s receiving a grant f this size is a significant cmmitment n the part f everyne invlved. While the technlgy and the prfessinal develpment are prvided in year ne, the grant perid is defined as tw years, during which the prject will be implemented, mnitred and measured. This grant f equipment and cash is awarded t the schl district. The HP equipment is the prperty f that rganizatin, t be used by district administratrs, teachers, and students in the implementatin f the prpsed prject. By accepting the grant award, the rganizatin and the identified participants make the cmmitment t: Cmplete the prpsed grant prject Assign ne persn n the team t be the primary pint f cntact fr HP and ISTE; this persn will be the respnsible fr cmmunicating imprtant grant-related infrmatin t the entire team Fully supprt the team f eight teachers t participate in the nine mnths f nline prfessinal develpment assciated with the grant award, including interactins with the ISTE-assigned mentr Use and maintain all the equipment and sftware included in the grant award. Ensure that technical supprt will be available and respnsive in a timely manner fr the granted equipment, fr lading sftware assciated with the grant prject, and fr ensuring internet access in the classrm. Authrize teachers t remve the granted equipment frm their classrms as needed and t dwnlad files frm the Internet. The active engagement f the district leaders in the ISTE leadership develpment events, including the Leadership Launch Cnference (August 2009) Distribute the $500 stipends t each f the eight teachers participating n the grant prject team Create a public webpage that describes the prject Title, abstract, cntacts Prject ratinale (why this prject was chsen; what educatinal issues it is meant t address) Implementatin (changes in pedaggy; use f technlgy) Impact (evidence cllected dcumenting changes in teaching and learning) Create a brief vide (5 min) dcumentary that shws the cntext and impact f the prject; this can be student-prduced r prfessinally prduced Prvide HP with private prject update reprts annually fr tw years, including respnding t an HP web-based survey. The first reprt will be due in April 2010.
