Prgram Infrmatin: Prgram Name: Prgram Type: Instructinal Nn Instructinal Prgram Missin Statement: The missin f the Bakersfield Cllege Human Services Prgram is t prvide ur diverse student ppulatin with an interdisciplinary backgrund fr success as a helper in the brad field f human services using applicatin f knwledge, decisin making and prblem slving. Prgram Descriptin: Describe hw the prgram supprts the Bakersfield Cllege Missin. The majr in Human Services prvides the student with an academic backgrund fr entry-level psitins in varius human services agencies. It als prepares the student fr upper-divisin wrk in human services and ther behaviral sciences. The field is interdisciplinary with the verall career gal f helping peple. This prgram descriptin clearly addresses the Bakersfield Cllege Missin bjective t prvide students with excellent learning pprtunities in basic skills, career/technical educatin, and transfer curses fr ur diverse cmmunity A Human Services student can chse a curse f study that leads t a Jb Skills Certificate fr immediate entry-level pprtunities r an Assciate in Arts Degree as a fundatin fr transfer and upper divisin wrk. Either educatinal path prvides students with the means t effectively engage their larger cmmunity. II. Prgram Assessment (fcus n mst recent year): A. The assessment target fr the 2013-14 academic was Prgram Learning Outcme number 3 which is intended t prvide students with a wrking knwledge f bureaucracies, scial plicy, ethical standards, and varius curses f actin related t the practical applicatin f the human services endeavr. In general, the assessment results were at an acceptable level f gain (42.5% gain verall with a 70.1% average); hwever, ne questin related t the three distinct functins perfrmed by human service prviders had the lwest level f gain verall (23.8%). The questin dealt with scial cntrl as an aspect f the human services endeavr and the infrmatin related t this tpic is cntained in the first chapter f the text and a pint cvered in the very first lecture. The results wuld seem t indicate a lwer level f retentin n that pint and a practical respnse wuld be t re-enfrce this infrmatin at multiple pints in the curse f an entire semester. The impact f the respnse t this assessment finding n the verall prgram planning wuld serve t re-enfrce an area f instructin t better equip students with a great pprtunity fr the retentin f pertinent knwledge. Describe any significant changes in yur prgram s weaknesses since last year. Unfrtunately, the prgram s strengths have cntributed t its weakness. The exceptinal success f the Human Services Prgram at Bakersfield Cllege has caused ther cmmunity educatinal institutins t replicate the structure and ffer similar prgrams. This fact has created a significant degree f cmpetitin fr the limited number f internship pprtunities available in the Bakersfield Cmmunity. The current Prgram Crdinatr is effective and very talented but the psitin simply lacks the number f hurs necessary t effectively represent Bakersfield Cllege in the larger cmmunity and maintain the necessary partnerships. They are significantly higher in all categries when cmpared t the cllege-wide average. The real issue here is nt whether student success will increase but whether r nt the current exceptinal standard can be maintained fr a sufficient enugh number f students t make a difference. The past success f the Human Services Prgram was in direct prprtin t the number f hurs the Prgram Crdinatr cmmitted t keeping the face f Bakersfield Cllege present in the cmmunity at large. The directive t restrict thse hurs t thse specified in the cntract has effectively eliminated that presence. Grwing cmpetitin fr the limited number f internship pprtunities has already restricted enrllment in the Intrductin t Human Services curse.
