Prgram Infrmatin: Prgram Name: AS T in Cmputer Science Prgram Type: Instructinal Nn Instructinal Prgram Missin Statement: The Assciate in Science in Cmputer Science fr Transfer degree (AS-T in Cmputer Science) is designed t prvide students a clear transfer pathway t the CSU cmputer science majr and cmpletin f the cmputer science baccalaureate degree, t grant guaranteed admissin t a CSU t a similar majr, with junir standing, and the ability t cmplete their remaining requirements within 60 semester r 90 quarter units. Students will take curses in cmputer science and related fields that will prvide the theretical and practical knwledge necessary t wrk in a variety f cmputer related fields such as Sftware Engineering, Cmputer Engineering, Cmputer Systems Analysis, Netwrk Engineering, Clud Cmputing, Mbile Applicatin Develpment, Cmputer Supprt, Cmputer Infrmatin Systems, Database Administratin, Netwrk Security, and Web Develpment. Prgram Descriptin: Describe hw the prgram supprts the Bakersfield Cllege Missin. The AS-T in Cmputer Science meets the Cllege s cre missin areas by prviding tw f the three: career and technical educatin and transfer curses. The prgram supprts career and technical educatin by ffering curses, and prviding training, that are highly sught after by emplyers. By design, the AS-T degree allws students t seamlessly transfer t a CSU Cmputer Science prgram withut the need t take additinal lwer divisin curses. II. Prgram Assessment (fcus n mst recent year): A. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur prgram planning? Des nt apply. This is a new degree fr the department that nly recently received state apprval (September 2014). As such, n assessment data exists. Three ut f the fur discipline specific curses are new. B. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur resurce requests? Des nt apply. See IIA. C. Instructinal Prgrams nly: Hw d curse level student learning utcmes align with prgram learning utcmes? The curse level utcmes directly relate t the prgram level utcmes. Students are measured as they prgress thrugh the curses and their skills are hned with each curse. All curses in the prgram have a measurement in the prgram level, except fr the tw physics curses these were required by the TMC and are lsely related t the prgram. D. Hw d the prgram learning utcmes align with Institutinal Learning Outcmes? Curses in the AS-T in Cmputer Science align with Area I and Area III. The skills required t master the PLOs enable students t think critically, abstractly, lgically, and algrithmically especially the latter because Cmputer Science is an algrithmic based discipline. A multitude f errrs, utside the cntrl f BMIT Cmputer Science, resulted in the 2014/2015 catalg cntaining OLD prgrams that referred students t curses that n lnger exist. This caused a great deal f frustratin fr bth students and BMIT faculty. Much time and effrt has been expended in trying t crrect thse errrs and we dubt that they have all been reslved. The late apprval f the AS-T in Cmputer Science als cntributed t this frustratin and t the prgram nt being listed in the 2014/2015 catalg. We als see examples f well-meaning departments n campus, extracting catalg infrmatin abut ur prgram frm the website and ther surces, duplicating that infrmatin int a frm that fits their needs, and then placing that infrmatin in their repsitries. We knw that, ver time, this infrmatin will becme utdated and cause cnfusin fr ur students. III. Resurce Analysis: A. Human Resurces 1. If yu are requesting any additinal psitins, explain briefly hw the additinal psitins will cntribute t increased student success. (Faculty Request frm; Classified Request frm) We are requesting NO ADDITIONAL FACULTY fr this prgram. Hwever, we are still advertising fr the unfilled psitin that was allcated t ur department last year. Cmputer Science is a hard-t-hire discipline and there is great cmpetitin fr faculty. Fr mnths, we have advertised in a multitude f electrnic publicatins and made direct calls t CSU Cmputer Science prgrams asking that they direct recent Master s Degree graduates t ur psitin annuncement. T date we have nt had success in ur recruitment effrts. We are tld that will be allwed t try again at the end f the Fall 2014 semester. We are als cncerned that ALL f the AS-T in Cmputer Science discipline specific curses are taught by ne nn-tenured faculty member in the department. This is dangerus. One tenured faculty member has FSA equivalencies fr the prgram, but his skills are nt such that he culd easily step in fr sme f the newer advanced curses in this AS-T. This additinal faculty member is DESPERATELY needed t sustain and prtect ur new prgram. 2. Prfessinal Develpment (Prfessinal Develpment frm) a. Describe briefly the effectiveness f the prfessinal develpment yur prgram has been engaged with (either prviding r attending) during the last cycle, fcusing n hw it cntributed t student success. Faculty in ur discipline are cnstantly updating their skills t stay current with trends in ur industry. Mst f us are self-taught in many f the areas that we teach. What we teach can t be learned in a three-day seminar, and many f us d nt see a direct benefit in attending trade wrkshps t speak with ur peers abut the latest educatin trends. A year ag we received updated prjectrs and sund systems in sme f the classrms as part f the Business Educatin building upgrades. Our B 11 and B 2 cmputer labs were upgraded with new cmputers and furniture. Walls were painted, flrs and curtains were replaced. 1. If yes, hw has the utcme cntributed t student success? The prgram is t new, but we can surmise that nicer facilities cntribute t imprved student attitudes and this leads t imprved student success. We have n data, ther than anecdtal, t supprt this. 2. N disrespect intended t thse wh have spent their time and energy n this prcess, but this sectin exists fr thse wh like t wax elquent. While we appreciate the desire t try and quantify the educatinal experience and planning prcesses, this remves the majrity element f educatin the human element. As lng as humans are invlved in the planning and budget allcatin prcesses, persnal judgment, intuitin and bias will exist. Please trust that BMIT will be strng advcates fr ur students and cmmunity while living with the realities f tday s educatinal system. Other than the previus paragraph that has been duplicated n all BMIT APRs, the last thing we wuld like t cmment n is the lack f a slutin that exists fr the assessment interdependence f prgrams n curses taught utside ur discipline. As an example, fr this AS T in Cmputer Science, 16 f the 28 units in the prgram are taught in ther disciplines. When the difficulty f assessing students fr thse curses in ther disciplines was brught up with an administratr wh is well versed in assessment, the respnse was Just make it wrk and d the best yu can. This is hardly a slutin that can be cnsistently implemented acrss campus. Add t the mix that CTE prgrams must be reviews every tw years, rather than every five years, the prcesses becme mre cmplex.
