The Social Sciences Division has several files servers allocated to departments and research units. Below is a list of all the file server addresses. Please make note of the address of your file server for this tutorial. In most cases your file server will correlate with the department you are affiliated with. If you are unsure which file server address to use please contact one of the local IT staff for support. Contact information is listed at the end of this document. Also please note that this connection method only works on the UCSC campus network via ethernet connection or Wireless using the EDUROAM network (does not work on cruznet). To connect off-campus on Windows please refer to our SFTP tutorial. File server addresses for your personal (private) space using Windows: \\anth-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\econ-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\educ-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\envs-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\lals-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\poli-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\psyc-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\socy-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\dean-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ \\research-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ File server addresses for collaborative (shared) space using Windows: \\anth-files.ucsc.edu\anth-projects\ \\econ-files.ucsc.edu\econ-projects\ \\educ-files.ucsc.edu\educ-projects\ \\envs-files.ucsc.edu\envs-projects\ \\lals-files.ucsc.edu\lals-projects\ \\poli-files.ucsc.edu\poli-projects\ \\psyc-files.ucsc.edu\psyc-projects\ \\socy-files.ucsc.edu\socy-projects\ \\dean-files.ucsc.edu\dean-projects\ \\research-files.ucsc.edu\research-projects\ In this tutorial we will be using the Politics server for demonstrative purposes.
Step 1) From the desktop of your computer right click on the Computer icon (Windows 7) or My Computer icon (Windows XP) and choose Map Network Drive... as shown here: Note: If you are using Windows 7, your preferences may be set to not show the Computer icon on the desktop and you may need to navigate to the Computer icon through the Windows start menu instead. To do this click on the Start menu (bottom left button on the screen), and right click where it says Computer and choose Map Network Drive... as shown here:
Step 2) The Map Network Drive wizard will start. Select a letter for the drive in the first dropdown. I recommend a letter lower in the alphabet (e.g. W, X, Y, Z). This will keep the drive letter unique and not overlap ever with CD-ROM or USB drives you may plug into the machine. In the Folder: field either type the address for your personal or shared server space (both listed at the start of this document). In this example I entered what a politics Professor or Staff member would type in: \\poli-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ for demonstrative purposes. If you want the server to automatically connect when the computer turns on, check Reconnect at Login. This is ONLY recommended if you have a secure password on your computer since the machine being turned on will also request access to the server: Once the data is entered click Finish.
Step 3) You will be prompted for a username and password. Please enter them and click OK. You may choose to store the password by checking the Remember my credentials box, but this is not recommended for security purposes. Note: Your ID on the file server is the same as your UCSC ID, However your password is managed by a separate system. This password will be delivered to you by UCSC campus mail or handed to you by department / local IT staff. If your username and password are accepted then the server volume will open automatically open for easy drop-and-drop use. If this is your first time using the personal space on server you should see the default set of generated folders. If you are connecting to the shared space you should see a list a list of folders related to department projects or research projects. From here you can use the server as you wish.
Note: Once connected, a shortcut to the file server will be listed in the main Computer section of the Windows OS under Network Location : To disconnect from the server, simply right-click on this volume and choose Disconnect from the right-click menu as shown below. In this case the volume is named carkeet because that is personal space volume name of the person who created this tutorial:
Tip: For ease of use, you can create a shortcut to the server from this same window to shorten the connection process in the future. To do this, simply right-click on the volume name and choose Create Shortcut. This will place a shortcut on your desktop to the server and only require you to enter your username and password in the future (rather than go through the entire Map A Network Drive process): An icon similar looking to this will appear on your Desktop if done correctly. You can tell this is a shortcut because of the small arrow logo on the icon:
