1 Directions for Connecting Computers running Windows XP to the Alverno College Network Alverno College NOTE: If your PC is running Windows XP, Microsoft s network client software is already installed and needs no special configuration. If your computer has a previous version of Windows, e.g., Windows 98 or ME, please refer to the Directions for Installing and Configuring the Microsoft Network Client for Windows 98/ME (also available at the Campus Center front desk). These instructions will assist you with connecting to the Internet, as well as both the Courses folder and your Home folder on the Alverno College network. Getting on the Internet To connect to the Internet, simply plug one end of your patch cable into the Ethernet port on your PC, and the other end into the network jack on the wall in your room. Then, launch either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator and type in a web address. If you are unable to get on the Internet, please see the Troubleshooting section below. Connecting to the Courses folder Instructors may create files for a particular class assignment and place them in the Courses folder on the Alverno College network for your access. To connect to the Courses folder, you will need to map a drive to it. You only need to do this once. To map a drive: 1. Double-click on My Computer. If you don t have a My Computer icon on your desktop, click Start / My Computer. 2. Click on the Tools menu, and then click Map Network Drive. 2 3. Drive: Leave the drive letter that the system automatically assigns. 4. Folder: \\stu1srv\courses 5. Be sure to check the box marked Reconnect at logon. 6. Click Finish. 7. You will then be prompted to login using your Alverno user name and password. If you are a new student and don t yet have your user name and password, don t worry. You will receive this information in one of your first class sessions. 8. In the User Name field, type AC\username. For example, a user named Susan B. Anthony would type the following: AC\anthonsb 9. 3 10. The Courses folder should open in a window as shown below. Simply locate your course number, and double-click the folder. Connecting to your Home folder As an Alverno student, you have a small space on the network server (about 25MB) to store files. You may access your Home folder from any PC connected to the Alverno network. To access your Home folder from your room, you will need to map a drive to it: 1. Double-click on My Computer. If you don t have a My Computer icon on your desktop, click Start / My Computer. 2. Click on the Tools menu, and then click Map Network Drive. 3. In the Drive field, type H: (for Home) 4. In the Folder field, type \\stu1srv\users\username, e.g., a user named Susan B. Anthony would type \\stu1srv\users\anthonsb 5. Be sure to check the box marked Reconnect at logon. 6. Click Finish. 5 Troubleshooting If you are unable to connect to the Internet, try the following in order: 1. Try several different web sites use one you know is valid like 2. Check your network jack a. Is your network jack live? i. Did you fill out a Residence Hall Network Connection Request Form? ii. Did you receive a confirmation back from? iii. If so, is your network patch cable plugged into the correct jack? Double check that the ID number on the jack you re plugged into matches the ID number on your confirmation form. 3. Check your connections a. Make sure the network patch cable is securely connected, both at the Ethernet port on your computer and at the wall jack. Unplug and re-plug if necessary. You should hear a click when the cable is securely connected just like you hear with a phone jack. b. Look at the Ethernet port on the back or side of your computer (wherever the network patch cable connects to your computer). There should be a green light on next to the port. 4. Restart your computer, launch Internet Explorer, and try again 5. Check to see if you re getting a valid IP address a. Click Start / Run b. Type in cmd c. Press Enter d. When you get the command prompt, type in ipconfig and press Enter e. Look for your IP address in the list of numbers. The IP address should look something like: 10.1.x.x f. Type ipconfig /renew (notice there is a space between ipconfig and the slash). g. Check the IP address again (see screen shot below) h. Try the website again.
