As a school we stress the importance of our students being honest, telling the entire truth, and being loyal to others. The first grade classes were responsible for coming up with the activities related to trustworthiness. The first activity all students, preschool through 6 th grade, will participate in is called the Piggy Bank. On the bulletin board by the elementary office, there will be a large piggy bank. Each student will receive a coin. On the coin, the students will write one way they can earn trust from others. The coins will then be placed on and near the piggy bank. Each classroom will discuss the idea of earning, collecting, saving, building up, and accumulating trust from parents, teachers, etc. and relating this to the same concepts with money. The second activity the students will participate in is called the Circle of Trust. Students will trace one of their hands and cut it out. On each hand, students will write how they can be trustworthy as a class or as a school. The hands will then be posted on the wall near their classroom or on their door in a circle to represent their circle of trust with their classmates. Along with this activity, teachers will be discussing the importance of being trustworthy and how to gain that trust. The third activity the students will participate in is the I trust activity. Students will be given a sheet of paper where they will fill in the blank as to who they trust and reasons why
they trust this person. Depending on the age of the students, they may draw the person, write about the person, or use a photograph/copy of a photograph of a person they trust. Students will then have the opportunity to share with their class who they trust and why they trust that individual. The last activity for the students to participate in is an interactive lesson called Water You Covering up? Teachers will be using coins and a jar of water to demonstrate the effects of a lie and also how a person cannot cover up a lie. Each student will have the opportunity to drop a penny in the jar to try to cover up the quarter (represents a lie), but they will not be able to actually cover the entire penny. Teachers will then discuss the importance of telling the truth and how when someone lies, it is difficult to completely cover up the lie, so we should always tell the truth. During PE class, the students will also have an opportunity to participate in a few different activities relating to trustworthiness. These activities are more physical in nature, so it is best for them to be done during their PE time. As a school, we are striving to help students learn and understand what it means to be a trustworthy individual by providing them with numerous opportunities. FM High School Drama to Present The Beverly Hillbillies!! The Fremont-Mills High School Drama Department will perform "The Beverly Hillbillies" on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school multi-purpose room. The play is directed by Carlene Crom and Dolores Moles. Fremont-Mills Special Events will sponsor a dinner theater before the Saturday evening performance, tickets are $15 per person including dinner and the ticket to the play. News from the library by Dawn Miller The book fair is coming March 11-14 and is going to be alive with excitement. Join us at the school library for the fun and excitement that comes with our Scholastic book fair with books and more for all ages. You will unleash the power of reading when you enter the story laboratory where reading gives you super powers. You will be able to check out and order all items available at the fair plus more with the online book fair from any internet capable device. Your students and teachers will be able to make wish lists and friends and family will be able to check the lists and purchase those items for them. The online fair will be accessible from the schools website to shop March 1 through March 22 nd. We will have books for every age and reading level and interest. You will find graphic novels, cookbooks, fiction, non-fiction, world records, posters, games and more. Best of all there will be prices starting at.50 cents and going up from there. Book Fair Spirit will be alive as students may come to school dressed for the themed days: Monday March 11 th is Mad Scientist Day Tuesday March 12 th is Super Hero Day Wednesday March 13 th is Evil Villon (or Science experiment gone wrong) Day Students may also make a robot from materials found around home to bring in to be displayed in the library. Each entry will receive something for their display and displays can be any kind of robotic (stationery or moving, colored, painted, plain, fancy). Use your imagination.! On Thursday March 14 th we are working on a Science Fair for the kids to both watch and participate in. We will have more news on this sent home with the students. Hope to see you there. Each year, approximately 50,000 students and educators participate in educational experiences offered by Iowa Public Television (IPTV) using the video classrooms of the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). ICN Technology makes it possible for instructors and learners physically separated by location to participate in interactive educational events in an efficient and cost-effective manner that is also a lot of fun. We have been able to join sessions such as Life on the Iowa prairie, Iowa Capitol Tour, Follow the drinking Gourd, Winter, Animal Winter Preparation, Animal Habitats, Mammal Tracks and we talked to an Iowa Astronaut. We are excited for February as some of the sessions we will be joining are titled: Feelings, Winter Birds in Iowa, Owls, Gadgets and Gismos: Simple Machines, Meet the Author Eileen Boggress, Clifford's Birthday and Arthur's Valentine. We Love to Read! By Miss Amy Borkowski, Third Grade Teacher From the start of the school year, it has been evident that this group of third graders loves to read! They are immersed in literature throughout the day and have taken on the responsibility of becoming stronger readers through the Daily Five framework, specifically during Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Listen to Reading. Many students have expressed that their favorite time of the day is Guided Reading! This is a time when they meet with the teacher in a small group to read books on their reading level and work on activities to further comprehend what they are reading. Sensing the delight that the third graders have taken in reading, I started a reading program with the class in mid-january, titled We Love to Read!. Each time a student read for 20 minutes at home, he or she filled out a small, paper heart cut-out, which a parent then signed. Each student set their own personal goal, and then as a class, we set a goal of bringing in 180 hearts during the five-week time frame. Once the class goal had been met, the students earned a reading party! In all, the students brought in 206 hearts, which totaled By: Ericka Mischke-1st Grade Teacher First Graders listen to Mrs. Mitchell s Presentation! The Fremont-Mills first graders were excited to learn about dental health and dental hygiene on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Our school nurse, Erika Mitchell, came into our classroom and explained the importance of proper brushing. She also stressed the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables that will help maintain healthy teeth. The first graders were very happy to receive their own toothbrush and case from the nurse. The class would like to thank Mrs. Mitchell for taking the time to share her helpful tips on dental hygiene. Do you ever wonder what our F-M Junior High Students are up to? If anyone has noticed a wonderful aroma in the halls in the middle of the afternoon, blame it on the Junior High FCS class. Students have been baking cookies. Proper measuring techniques, following instructions and reading skills and problem solving skills have been utilized. Even when the end product does not have the best results, learning has still taken place. We all learn from our errors as well as our successes. Mrs. Doscher s 5th grade class SHINES Ellie, our 1st place speller and her proud smile! This winter has been an exciting time for Mrs. Doscher's 5 th grade class! One event was Invent Iowa, where students had to come up with an original invention and present it to the judges. We had several make it to state from our class. Ellie Crom is going to state for invention of The Switch Pack; a back pack cover that you can switch out to different covers. Lexie Howard and Courtney Goodman made it with their invention called Horsin Around ; a movable caddy that holds all that you need for taking care of your horse. Kelly Kesterson made it to state with her invention called, The Super Head Band ; this head band has a flower attached with Velcro, that can be switched out with different kinds of flowers. Fifth grade had another challenge this winter with the Spelling Bee. Cody Lampman and Ellie Crom went on the final round. Ellie Crom won first place with the Spelling Bee! We are very proud of all our fifth graders; they have all been doing a great job at challenging themselves this year and reaching for the stars!
