LHCS News A weekly publication of the Lake Harriet Community School PTA April 25, 2017 TWENTY-NINTH ISSUE FOR 16-17 New Items: Minnesota Reading Corp Tutor Lake Harriet Lower Campus is seeking applicants to serve as Minnesota Reading Corps tutors for the 2017-18 school year. Qualifications: Can commit to working with students every day during school hours from August 20, 2017 to June 23, 2018. Have a strong desire to support K-3 students developing literacy skills. (An Education degree is not required - training is provided as well as on site coaching) Are resilient, flexible, and open to feedback Have reliable transportation Are citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. Schedule is primarily school day hours, Monday through Friday when school is in session. Choose from 3 positions: 25 hours per week 35 hours per week 40 hours per week Must be available for training on August 22-25 from 8:30-4:30 p.m. in the Twin Cities Note: There are benefits and compensation. We will forward your information on to the recruiter. 13 Reasons Why Information Over the last few weeks we have heard a lot of discussion among LHCS students and staff
regarding the new Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why, based on a fictional novel by Jay Asher. The series is rated TV-MA (for a mature audience). It depicts a journey of a high school student who commits suicide, leaving behind tapes in which she tells her story and the events that led up to her death. Those who have seen it describe the series as graphic and real. The creators have promoted the series as being one that would help students understand the impact of bullying, social media, harassment, assault and suicide. While the series is compelling and dramatic, the concern of many educators is that it does not accurately model what we would want or hope for students that are struggling or in crisis, and that the show may unintentionally send confusing messages about suicide. It is also a concern that so many of our students are finding ways to access this program without parental knowledge. The intent of this newsletter post is to make families and staff aware of the series and also to provide some resources and talking points about the series. young women who run the school of having a lesbian relationship. This explosive drama written by the virtuosic Lillian Hellman made waves when it premiered in 1934. Herself a target of the McCarthy era blacklisting of Hollywood and Broadway artists, to Hellman this was a play about the evil power of slander. Wellness Update (expires April 25) Minneapolis Public Schools is doing big things to support our students and staff - locally sourced meals, true food taste tests, group bicycling rides and more! Because we know that well-being is an important part of learning, we're updating our district wellness policy 6690. The updated policy sets a foundation that will not only get MPS in compliance with federal regulations, but it will also increase awareness and engagement around wellness. Read more about the upcoming changes and provide valuable feedback that may help guide our implementation in the 2017/2018 school year. Equity Conversation (expires April 25) For the second time this year, there will be a community conversation about equity and integration at Minneapolis Public Schools. The equity conversation will be held in a World Cafe format from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Davis Service Center. Children are encouraged to pursue interests, and develop friendships, independence, and confidence. We incorporate curriculum from Mother Goose Time. Minneapolis Kids Jr. runs Mon Thu from 10am 1pm $80.00/week. Minneapolis Kids Jr. will offer programming from the Monday following Labor Day to the Thursday prior to Memorial Day. Classroom Placement of Students at Lower Campus: (expires end of April) Dear Families, I want you to know that the teaching staff at Lower spends hours each spring classifying the students and carefully taking the time to place them into classrooms. Many factors are considered and each class is carefully balanced. That being said, we are asking that you please do not send us parent information forms. We are trying something new effective 2017-18; in the fall, once you have received your child s placement, our teachers will be collecting information about your child. This is when you can tell us all about your child- skills, abilities and learning styles. We want you to connect with your child s classroom teacher, build a relationship, communicate back and forth, and share your hopes and dreams for your child. Please keep in mind that ALL of our staff are highly qualified and are eager to work with you and your child in their educational endeavors. Effective spring of 2017, we will no longer be accepting any classroom requests during our classification process. Instead we want you to share your child s strengths and challenges with the teacher in the fall.
