Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows XP with Service Pack 3 Remote Desktop Access For Mac User Directions, see page 5 This instruction allows district staff and students to access the Commack UFSD network from home or anywhere outside of the district with a broadband connection. This is a step by step instruction for using the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client for the first time. If RDC have been used before, some of the steps may not be necessary. What is Remote Access? Remote access is the ability to connect through the Internet to resources such as data folders and software applications located on the Commack network. You will be able to access your home folder (H:) as well as public folders so that you can retrieve and send files to and from home. You will also be able to access and run many applications currently installed on the Commack network. Step 1: Navigating to Remote Desktop Icon Click on Windows Start icon. Navigate to All Programs Accessories (In XP, Accessories Communications) Choose Remote Desktop Connection Step 2: Computer name input and Options button Type in remote.commack.k12.ny.us (Note the period in between the words). Click on Options
(In WIndowsXP you may be prompted to save the file it will be a shortcut so you don t have to enter all the information each time you log on. Save it to your Desktop. Under the General Tab, retype remote.commack.k12.ny.us ) Step3: Configuring User Drive Access Click on Local Resources Tab Under Local devices and resources, click on the More button. Place a check mark next to Drives to see your home PC s drive(s). (In XP under the Local Devices, check Disk Drives.) This allows file transfer between your home PC and home folder at Commack. Click on OK when done (The main window appears). (In XP click Connect. )
At the main RDC window, click on Connect button. A Do you trust this remote connection? window appears. (In XP you will get a Security Warning instead) At the Do you trust this remote connection? prompt, click on Connect button. (In XP click OK )
Step 4: Entering in your credentials. Enter in your username and password in the other credentials box. Format for the username is the same as an email address. E.g. for Jane Doe its jdoe@commack.k12.ny.us. This is known as a Fully Qualify Domain Name and may not necessarily mean you have an email address. Click on OK button Step 5: Trusting a certificate. Verify that the identity of the certificate name is REMOTE.commack.k12.ny.us Click Yes to connect and it should finally get you to the desktop.
To access your files, click on the H Drive. To Log Off just click the X in the blue bar at the top of the screen. Follow standard procedure by planning head, backing up your work in more than one location (i.e. on a portable flash drive) and recognizing that all computer systems are subject to malfunctions (including ours) just when you need them to work the most. Put a check mark in the disk and printer boxes. Step 3: Go to the General tab and fill out the boxes as shown above with computer name: remote.commack.k12.ny.us Step 4: Entering in your credentials.
