NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC NURSES 39TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE Honrando HONOR the Past, Atesorando TREASURE Formando SHAPE the Future the Present, JULY 15 18, 2014 HYATT REGENCY MIAMI MIAMI, FL REGISTER TODAY AT NAHNNET.ORG/NAHNMEETINGS.HTML Register Now! ATTENDEE GUIDE

Join NAHN and a united nursing profession this summer as we explore Hispanic health challenges and shape the future of nursing at NAHN s 39th Annual Conference! While being immersed in the energizing atmosphere of Miami among your peers, heighten your nursing expertise in four key areas: Clinical, Healthcare Reform, Best Practices and My Nursing Career. NAHN s 39th Annual Conference will deliver a high caliber of content, covering popular topics such as the Affordable Care Act and patient engagement, as well as unique issues such as emerging nursing roles and rare diseases in the Hispanic population. NAHN welcomes not only Latino nurses and healthcare professionals, but also those from any ethnic background who are leaders in improving healthcare for the Latino community. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Our program is designed for nurses, nurse educators, researchers, clinicians, nursing students, and anyone interested in learning about successful best practices in nursing and related research as it correlates to Hispanic health issues. CONFERENCE TRACKS The conference is planned around four tracks: TRACK 1: My Nursing Career TRACK 2: Healthcare Reform TRACK 3: Clinical Practice TRACK 4: Best Practices 2

39th Annual Conference CONFERENCE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the conference, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe healthcare issues facing the Hispanic population, their implications for nursing in the current healthcare system and the role of new technology in improving care for these patients. 2. Identify ways in which nursing can improve care by using outcomes-based research and current best practices, and learn how care improvements can be implemented in the clinical setting. 3. Understand the challenges of the evolving role of the nurse in healthcare reform and identify strategies that will help nurses and the profession meet those challenges. 4. Recognize the value of advanced and continuing education for nurses and quality education for patients in improving care, optimizing outcomes and increasing satisfaction. 5. Develop a professional leadership development plan that incorporates career goals and important milestones, and applies networking and mentorship principles to enhance growth. 3

WHY ATTEND? This year s conference offers a wide range of quality content, including concurrent sessions and poster presentations on topics such as healthcare reform, issues specific to disease states and practice settings as well as the latest innovations in technology and healthcare models. The following summaries sample the engaging sessions you ll find this year in Miami: Decreasing Health Care Disparities in a Pediatric Hospital Hispanics are the largest minority group in the US; they are at risk for poor health outcomes due to access to healthcare and lack of insurance. For those patients that do receive care, organizations do not have the resources and processes in place to ensure they receive information and education in a timely manner and in their language. Therefore, key information is missed and sometimes misinterpreted. In response to this issue, Lurie Children s Hospital has made a commitment to improve service to Latino patients and to their families. Educating Multicultural Communities on the ACA Nurses are vital to successfully transforming our country s health are system. In addition to providing high quality care to families throughout the country, they are also educating multiple communities about the importance of healthcare coverage and the new options available through the health insurance marketplace. In Arizona, almost 40 percent of the uninsured are Hispanic and qualify for lower costs on coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace, including through Medicaid. This presentation will describe a leadership model for Hispanic nurses working with consumers to provide information and resources on the basic provisions of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implemented through the Phoenix Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses in partnership with AARP Arizona, this model draws strength from the unique contribution of nurses who understand the needs of the Hispanic community. This session will discuss the comprehensive structure developed by the hospital to support their culturally diverse patient population and their families through practices including: providing all education and information in their patients primary language through electronic health records; offering diversity training to all healthcare professionals; and utilizing translation services such as a Get Well Network a televised on-demand education system in multiple languages, patient self-check kiosks that have information in multiple languages, and phone and video interpreters for translated patient education. 4

Transitioning from Acute Care to an Aggregate Care Focus As the most recent Institute of Medicine Report indicates, the nurse of the future enters the profession in a healthcare system very different from the one most of us remember. Today, the healthcare system is complex and difficult to navigate. The health/illnesses of clients is increasingly complex and difficult to manage. The IOM report unlike previous versions focuses on the nurse of the future, and the future is now. Nursing education must change to prepare nurses to transition from acute care and provide them with the tools needed to promote prevention in the community. The purpose of this presentation is to continue the conversation started last year after the session entitled: Nurse Home Visiting As A Way to Address Health Disparities in the Latina Population. Nurse Family Partnership is a committee that helps nurses transition from acute care to community practice through education, reflective practice, individualized supervision, and mentoring. In this session, the presenters will inform the audience of the characteristics of the nurse who could successfully transition to a community role, specifically as a nurse home visitor. Focus will be on discussing the role of the nurse home visitor/community health nurse, characteristics that facilitate transition, and how to avoid common pitfalls. Success in Nursing School for Under-Represented Students Funding a nursing education can be a challenge for any student, especially students that are from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds. An HRSA Nursing Workforce Diversity grant was used to develop a program called PROUD (Pre-entry and Retention Opportunities for Undergraduate Diversity) at a college in Illinois. The goal of PROUD is to provide scholarships and stipends for disadvantaged and underrepresented students to offset the cost of tuition and books, as well as improving retention and professional development activities. Retention activities include monitoring of grades, counseling and tutoring interventions for all students, and identification of those having academic difficulties. This session will explore the PROUD program, which increases the retention and professional development of students through a number of means, such as funding for opportunities to attend professional organization meetings such as the National Black Nurses Association and National Association of Hispanic Nurses, instituting education programming focusing on career exploration with community leaders and faculty discussion of their journeys in nursing and various advanced education career paths, and assisting applications to graduate school and nurse residency programs. Upon graduation, the program pays for a Kaplan review course to increase success of passing the NCLEX exam the first time. 5
