Dear MBF Supporter, The Monica Burguera Foundation (MBF) was created in memory of Monica Burguera, a 20 year old girl who died in a boating accident in the 2006 Columbus Day in Miami, Florida. The accident took the lives of Monica and James Noel Pou and left many others seriously injured. After this fatal accident, Monica s family and close friends realized the importance of boat safety education. Due to the lack of awareness, they started working towards building consciousness of the dangers that exist while boating. For the last two years since the boat accident, some of the survivors, together with friends and relatives, have returned to the regatta site, but with a different purpose; to promote safety. Our objective is to raise funds in order to create programs that will educate boaters and create consciousness of the importance of boater s safety education in order to decrease boating accidents. The success of this foundation is credited largely to our sponsors, who lend their names and financial support to the fundraising event and private donations. MBF currently offers free monthly boating safety classes in partnership with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 67 and 69. Classes are in English and Spanish and held in the foundations office located in 3750 West Flagler Street and at other locations throughout Miami- Dade County. In 2013 the foundation funded the boating safety class to 716 persons. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued 1,233 Boating Education ID cards in Miami- Dade County in 2013. MBF is responsible for funding 666 of those graduates of the ABS and Navegando America. That is 54% of the of the Miami- Dade county total. MBF is also very lucky to have a wonderful partnership with the U.S.C.G. Auxiliary FSO- PE 67 and 69. They are unpaid volunteers and all of the money raised goes to pay for books and other materials used in the classes. We calculate this based on $25.00 per student; this cost is for materials U.S.C.G. Auxiliary gives each student. The foundation is committed to these classes again for 2014 and 2015. The Florida WC just released the 2013 Florida boating accident statistics this morning. Most of it is very tragic and preventable. The statistics highlight why boating education is so important in preventing injuries and deaths.
In the statistics there is one bright item that highlights why your support to promote boating education is so important. The statistics show that 1,230 persons received Boating Safety Education ID Cards in Miami- Dade County in 2013. The program MBF supports was responsible for 666 or 54 % of the total Boating Safety Education ID Cards issued in Miami- Dade County in 2013. The 2014 official statistics will be published in June or July of 2015. Here are some highlights from the 2013 statistics. The four worst counties are: 1- Miami Dade 2- Monroe 3- Palm Beach 4- Broward Since MBF started supporting program in 2010, the number of students has been increasing each year at an outstanding rate. We had only 107 in 2010 and that number has grown each year to 681 in 2013. In 2014 we had 979. 2015 promises to be an even bigger year. We hope that together, with your support, we can continue funding the boating safety classes. We would like to encourage boaters, passengers and families to learn and remember how to enjoy our beautiful waters responsibly and safely and hopefully you and your company can help us achieve this. Can you help?
