In the spirit of helping others the Auxiliary volunteers its time so you can get the most out of your boating pleasure. Before you risk the lives and health of your family and friends, make sure you know before you go. Take the time to attend a class. Make the time and schedule a Free Vessel Safety Check. Many insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to individuals who successfully complete a course. Upon successfully completing a course and exam individuals are awarded a certificate and card. They may qualify for, and are invited to continue on for further certification. About Boating Safely Boating Skills and Seamanship Sailing Skills and Seamanship How to Read a Nautical Chart Coastal Navigation About Boating Safely Fee: $ Day Course given on Saturdays 8AM 5PM, Sign In promptly at 7:30AM, Preregistration highly recommended Dates: September 12, 2015 and November 14, 2015 This course is good for the captain, the mate, and the whole family. In fact we re so serious about your safety, we offer family discounts!* This entry level (ABS) boating course is the quickest way of getting your on the water certificate, necessary in all states but it s only a beginning. ABS is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). ABS covers boating fundamentals and the basic skills needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states. 4 Sailing Skills and Seamanship Fee: $ Thursdays 7 9PM, Sign In promptly at 6:30PM, Preregistration highly recommended Dates: September 17, 2015 January 21, 2016 (17 sessions) The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Sailing Skills and Seamanship Course (SS&S) is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice sailboat operators. The course is divided into parts: 10 core requirement two to four hour lessons plus 6 additional lessons that will enhance the skills required for a safe voyage in all conditions. These courses are taught in addition to the core courses. 5 Coastal Navigation (Weekend Navigator, electronic plus Advanced Coastal Navigation, traditional) Fee: $ Thursdays 7 9PM, Sign In promptly at 6:30PM, Preregistration highly recommended Dates: February 11, 2016 to May 19, 2016 So you want more you want to go for more than a day trip you want cruising and who doesn t? You need to know how to get there...and get back! Remember, it s all about comfort! You ll need our Coastal Navigation course. We cover navigation with electronic devices as well as traditional methods. You have a GPS, we ll show you how to use it. If it goes dead or falls in the water, we ll show you the way around that. You have chart plotters, radar, etc., we ll show you how to employ them along with the alternatives should they fail. This is a meaty 15 weeks of navigation fun. We ve married Advanced Coastal Navigation with Weekend Navigator you get it all! The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary s Weekend Navigation Course is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators. The course is divided into two major parts designed to educate the boating enthusiast in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions. You want a jump start to our navigation course come prepared check out our: How to Read a Nautical Chart Fee: $50.00 Saturday Date: February 6, 2016, Sign In promptly at 9AM, Preregistration highly recommended Course Overview: We ll get you started on the language of nautical charts not maps CHARTS! When navigating on land you use a map. It depicts the various thoroughfares, their directions and names. Major areas such as parks, lakes etc. would also be noted. By selecting the prescribed route, you would be able to reach a desired destination. This seminar unravels the mysteries and the language of charts. At sea there are no streets, no separate areas, and no differences from abutting or surrounding areas. With no land mass over the horizon, everything looks the same. For navigating at sea, we use a chart. By knowing our latitude and longitude, we can locate our position anywhere on earth. Navigators must also be warned of dangerous areas, leading them through safe passages and directing them within set patterns to prevent collisions. For this, Aids to Navigation are depicted on nautical charts. Other available information on nautical charts includes, but is not limited to, depth of water, bottom type, magnetic variations affecting the compass, chart scales, and inter tidal information. This course will provide the navigator with the knowledge to interpret the chart s contents to navigate safely to their destination and return to port. Text and training chart included. And just to sweeten the pot, if you take How to Read a Nautical Chart and move to our Coastal Navigation course we ll discount the navigation course 10%.
