What is Naviance? Naviance is a comprehensive college and career readiness solution. Its goal is to empower students and families in connecting learning and life. Naviance provides schools and districts with the information they need to help students prepare for life after high school. Naviance allows students to create a plan for their futures by helping them discover their individual strengths and learning styles and explore college and career options based on these discoveries.
What s the purpose of Naviance to DMS parents and students? The assessments students will take through Naviance will allow parents to see their children s interests and learning profiles. It will alert parents to upcoming events. It will help parents guide their children to make informed decisions about academic plans. It will help parents and students to research colleges, careers and scholarships.
How will you sign up for Naviance? If you are attending tonight s meeting, you will receive a business card which has your initial login. Please note that if you have logged on by November 30 th, you will receive a DMS keychain and your name will be placed in a drawing! The number of logins will determine the number of gift cards we are able to give out. So, spread the word to your friends and neighbors who currently have students in grades 7-8! The link for the parent login for Naviance is on the DMS webpage.
How will you sign up for Naviance? There will be a computer lab open after tonight s presentation so that you can immediately sign in and become eligible for the gas card drawing. If you are unable to stay and use our computer lab, then you can access the steps via the DMS webpage where a Screencast link shows how to sign up for and log into Naviance.
Available DCHS Program Options There are three types of diplomas: 1. Core 40 Diploma 2. Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma 3. Core 40 with Technical Honors Diploma
Core 40 Diploma Indiana s Core 40 curriculum provides the academic foundation all students need to succeed in college and the workforce. Requires 44 credits Requires student to take 5 directed elective credits in any of the following areas: World Language, Fine Arts or a Career-Technical area. (Career-Technical classes include courses from Business, Engineering & Technology, Family & Consumer Sciences, PLTW, Ivy Tech Automotive, and Ben Davis Area 31 Career Center.) Students must take a math or quantitative reasoning course each year in high school.
Core 40 Credit Requirements English 8 credits Math 6 credits (2 Alg. I, 2 Geometry, 2 Alg. II) Science 6 credits (2 Biology I, Chemistry I or Physics I) Any additional credits in: Chemistry II, Physics II, AP Biology, Biology II, Zoology, Forensic Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Integrated Chemistry/Physics, Environmental Science, Earth & Space Science I, Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, or Medical Intervention
Core 40 Credit Requirements Social Studies 6 Credits (2 World History, 2 US History, 1 Government, 1 Economics) Physical Education 2 Credits (Can substitute extracurricular/athletic participation) Health 1 Credit (Can substitute: 3 FACS Classes-Human Development, Child Development and Interpersonal Relationships. One year of Principles of Biomed will meet the health requirement.) Fine Arts 2 Credits Electives 15 Credits
Core 40 with Academic Honors Complete all requirements for Core 40 Diploma Requires 47 credits Requires a cumulative grade point average of a B (2.66) or above Only courses in which a student has earned a grade of C or above may count toward a Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma.
Core 40 with Academic Honors Cont d. Students must complete one of the following: A. Take 2 AP courses and corresponding exams B. Earn 6 verifiable transcripted college credits in dual-credit courses from priority course list. (This means 2 dual credit courses.) C. A minimum of 3 verifiable transcripted college credits from the priority course list and 2 credits in AP courses and corresponding AP exams.
Core 40 with Academic Honors Cont d. D. Earn a combined score of 1750 or higher on the SAT critical reading, mathematics and writing sections and a minimum score of 530 on each. E. Earn an ACT composite score of 26 or higher and complete written section.
Core 40 with Technical Honors Requires 47 credits Complete all requirements for Core 40 Have a cumulative grade point average of B (2.66) or above Earn a grade of C or above in courses that count toward the diploma
Core 40 with Technical Honors Cont d. Earn 6 credits in the college and career preparation courses in a state-approved College & Career Pathway and one of the following: 1. Pathway designated industry-based certification or credentials, or 2. Pathway dual credits from the lists of priority courses resulting in 6 transcripted college credits
Core 40 with Technical Honors Cont d. Complete one of the following; A. Any one of the options (1-6) of the Core 40 with Academic Honors B. Earn the following scores or higher on WorkKeys: Reading for Information Level 6; Applied Mathematics-Level 6; Locating Information Level 5 C. Earn the following minimum score(s) on Accuplacer: Writing 80, Reading 90, Math 75. D. Earn the following minimum score(s) on Compass: Writing 70, Reading 80, Algebra 66.
Available Honors Courses Honors Courses: Students selecting Honors level courses must have either participated in the High Ability program, be identified as high ability or be recommended by a teacher. Honors level courses follow a weighted grading scale. The following are Honors courses: -English 9 Honors -English 10 Honors -Latin IV Honors -World History& Civilization Honors -Biology I Honors -Geometry Honors -Algebra II Honors -Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry Honors
AP Courses Advanced Placement Courses: The College Board establishes the curriculum and course content in Advanced Placement courses. An Advanced Placement (AP) course is designed to prepare students to take the AP exam given in May of each year. A score of a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam will allow students to earn college credit in that specific course. By earning college credit students can potentially save tuition fees when transferring credits to the college of their choice. All Advanced placement courses are weighted courses. Dual Credit Dual Credit Courses: Students may earn high school credit and college credit for some courses (dual credit). At this time, there are two universities DCHS is partnering with for dual credit; Vincennes University EXCEL program and Ivy Tech Community College. Credits earned through these two colleges may transfer to other state universities. In order for students to be enrolled in dual credit courses they have to take the Accuplacer test and meet admission requirements. The dual credit offerings include

Project Lead the Way Two Pathways: Technology and Biomedical Technology is geared toward engineering. Courses include: Intro to Engineering and Design, Principles of Engineering, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Biomedical is geared toward anyone interested in pursuing a career in health science. Courses include: Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Intervention, and Biomedical Innovations
Area 31Career Center Area 31 Career Center is way more than high school. Area 31 is high school with hands-on learning and real-world work experience. It prepares students for a high-wage, high-demand career right out of high school OR for getting a head start on a college degree. College credits can be earned and transferred to a two or four year college. Area 31 students attend career preparation classes for half-day - either morning or afternoon - everyday. The other half of the day is spent at DCHS. This program is open to Juniors and Seniors.
Area 31 Career Center Info Area 31 Programs enroll more than 1,200 students in career classes each year. There are 39 programs in which students can earn dual credit, and/or industry license or certification. Career Center students have an opportunity to participate in co-curricular clubs such as BPA, DECA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA and Skills USA
