2 What is Dual Credit? Dual Credit IS college. Students will be exposed to college-level material and are considered college students Students will receive both high school and college credit Dual credit grades become part of the student s high school and college permanent academic record As college students, dual credit participants are protected by FERPA law and their information cannot be disclosed to parents (unless a waiver form is signed)

3 What is Dual Credit? Students are allowed to take a maximum of TWO Dual Credit courses per semester College credit is earned upon completion of the class with a grade of D or higher. However, making a D will bring your college GPA down and you may have to retake it because most degrees require a C or better.

4 Dual Credit Transferability State supported colleges and universities in the state of TEXAS must accept dual credit courses if the student makes a C (70 or above). However, sometimes the student has taken a dual credit course that is not required for her major. In this case it will count for an elective. Private colleges should be contacted by the STUDENT to inquire about dual credit transfer.

5 It is the student s responsibility to confirm with any college they want to attend if credits will transfer.

6 Dual Credit Grading Policy Students will only receive high school credit for a grade of 70 or higher in a dual credit course. If a student receives below a 70, they will be required to retake the standard GHS class in order to receive high school credit Failure to maintain a C (70 or above) will result in a schedule change into a high school course for the second semester & will not be allowed to take dual credit classes the following year A, B or better (80 or above) is required for the Distinguished Achievement Program. (does not include students graduating under the new foundation plan)

7 Grading Policies Progress & 6 week grade reports are NOT issued during the course of the semester for Dual Credit courses Exception: Seniors grade at the end of the 5th six weeks will be used to determine final GPA and class ranking Instructors will ONLY communicate with the student about their grade status It is the student s responsibility to keep up with grades and withdraw dates Before you withdraw from a course, you must bring a copy of your current grade to the counselor that will be the grade transferred to the regular class

8 Is Dual Credit the Right Choice for Everyone? Parents and students should consider goals, maturity, responsibility, and academic ability levels prior to enrolling in a dual credit class You might decided not to participate in dual credit if you: Are struggling with other high school classes Feel overwhelmed with your current load of coursework and extracurricular activities Are not ready to take on college-level course work and the responsibilities of being a college student

9 Eligibility Requirements Be classified as a junior or senior Sophomores may take College Algebra in the spring if they take Honors Algebra II in the fall Not failed any class the previous year Must have passed all EOC tests Sophomores (English I, Algebra & Biology) Juniors (English I, English II, Algebra & Biology) Seniors (English I, English II, Algebra, Biology & US History) Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA Apply & meet the college s requirements for admission Satisfy the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements

10 TSI Eligibility Requirements TSI Assessment: Reading Comprehension- 351 Math 350 Written Essay 5 or (written essay 4 & multiple choice of 363) SAT: a combined verbal (critical reading) & mathematics score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on both the verbal (critical reading) & the mathematics tests ACT: composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and the mathematics tests

11 Where to take the TSI Assessment Testing will be offered at GHS for a reduced fee ($10-3 sections) Tuesday, June 9:00 am Wednesday, June 9:00 am Limited seats available each day for testing Students must sign up for testing at GHS Sign up sheet will be in Mrs. Angeley s office Testing is also available at Hill College ($39-3 sections) TSI results are due to GHS by Thursday, June 18th.

12 Hill College Dual Credit Courses Fall Composition I US History I US Government Registration is now open Spring Composition II US History II Economics College Algebra Registration will begin in November

13 Hill College Technical Training Students may also take technical program classes such as: Automotive Technology Child Care and Development Cosmetology Criminal Justice Fire Technology Academy (Seniors only) Pre Nursing Management Office Administration Welding It is the student s responsibility to provide their own transportation to Hill College to take these courses. Some of the courses may be offered online May be exempt from TSI testing in some of the programs

14 COST (Hill College) Tuition for a Dual Credit course is approximately $250 per class, per semester For example: If you are taking Dual Credit English IV You will take ENGL 1301 Compostion I in the fall ENGL 1302 Composition II in the spring Career and Technical Courses may be more expensive, depending on the program Students are also responsible for purchasing any materials and textbooks needed for the classes

15 UT Permian Basin Courses taken through UTPB are 100% online Students must be highly self-disciplined to enroll in an online course Must be in the top 50% of class to enroll in UTPB 1st quartile - TSI assessment 2nd quartile - TSI assessment & SAT (900); or ACT (19); or PSAT (90) Summer Academy available for students who will be seniors next year UTPB Tuition $150 per course per semester (plus books/materials) English 1301 & English $200 per course per semester (plus books/materials) See Mrs. Angeley to apply to UTPB

17 Hill College - Returning Dual Credit Students Students who are currently enrolled in Dual Credit courses will not need to apply again. You will need to log into your MyRebel account to register and pay

18 To Register (Hill College) 1) Apply for admissions online at 2) Take TSI assessment, either by making an appointment at Godley High School on specified dates or at Hill College.- TSI results must be provided to GHS by Thursday, June 18th in order to take dual credit classes next year. 3) Register & pay for your fall classes If the only class you are taking is College Algebra you will not apply or register until November

19 Remember Dual Credit grades impact BOTH high school and college GPAs The Dual Credit course record will become a permanent part of your college record You must make a B or better for Distinguished Achievement You must pay tuition & purchase any materials or books. If you do not pay by the deadline you will be removed from the class

20 Remember These are college classes. They require STUDYING. Students should expect to attend class, do work and study. If they don t, they can expect a poor or failing grade. Dual credit grades, like regular college grades remain on the college transcript forever.

21 Dual Credit Guidelines Student/Parent Agreement Student and Parent must sign and return the Dual Credit Contract to the high school counselor by Friday, May 15, 2015 Signatures indicate that you are aware of what is required for you to be successful in a Dual Credit class

22 IMPORTANT DATES/DEADLINES Wednesday, May 6:00 pm - Dual Credit parent meeting Friday, May 15 - Dual Credit Student Agreements due Monday, May 18, 2015 (3:00-5:00 pm) - Hill College will be at GHS to assist students and parents complete the Apply Texas application Tuesday, June 9 & Wednesday, June 9:00 am - TSI testing at GHS Thursday, June 18 - TSI, SAT or ACT scores due to counselor Registration April 1, August 12, 2015 Payment Deadlines - August 12, 2015 All courses will be dropped if not paid in full or payment arrangements made by this date
