3 What is Dual Credit? Dual Credit is a form of concurrent enrollment allowing a student to take certain courses at San Jacinto College that earn both college and high school credit. Students take two courses in the fall semester and two in the spring for both their junior and senior years of high school. Students can graduate from high school with up to 24 hours of college credit. More hours can be earned by taking summer courses.

4 Why Dual Credit? College experience. Develop skill sets needed to be successful in post secondary education. Such as: note taking, reading comprehension, time management, communicating with professors, using college support services, forming study groups, etc. Credits transfer to Texas public institutions. *Private/Out of State. Students can decrease the time and money associated with earning a degree.

5 ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

6 STEP #1 Apply Online and Get an SJC Student ID (G#) Complete an admission application through Apply Texas at Application Information: Dual Credit High School, General Studies, Citizen or Permanent Resident (not both). Not new first time in college. G# will come in an 2-3 days later.

7 STEP #2. Submit an Enrollment Form Students are required to meet with their high school counselor to seek permission to enroll in Dual Credit at SJC. Must be signed by Student Parent or Guardian High School Counselor or Designee Ask you high school counselor for this form.

8 STEP #3 TSI Requirements Dual Credit student must demonstrate college readiness. Submit documentation that you have met the TSI requirements: TSIA or Provide Proof of an Exemption SAT or ACT PSAT*/PLAN/STAAR (Juniors Only) These vary so speak with your high school counselor to help guide you.

9 Testing In order to register for classes you must meet the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement. This shows that you are college ready. ACT Students with a composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on the English test and the Mathematics test (21 for College Algebra) shall be exempt from those corresponding sections. ACT scores are valid for five years. SAT Students with a combined Critical Reading and Mathematics score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on the Critical Reading and 500 on the Mathematics test (minimum 550 for College Algebra) shall be exempt for those corresponding sections. SAT scores are valid for five years. PSAT The student achieves a combined score of 107 with a minimum of 50 on the Critical Reading and Mathematics test (minimum 55 for College Algebra) relevant to the courses to be attempted. (This can be used for junior year classes only.) An eligible student who has enrolled in dual credit under the PSAT scores must demonstrate further eligibility to enroll in courses in 12th grade.

10 Testing (cont.) PLAN- Students earn a composite score of 23 or higher and a minimum of a 19 on the English and 19 on Mathematics (21 for College Algebra) relevant to the courses to be attempted. (This can be used for junior year classes only.) An eligible student who has enrolled in dual credit under the PLAN scores must demonstrate further eligibility to enroll in courses in 12th grade. STAAR- STAAR scores can be used by high school juniors only. English II EOC score of level II or higher. Algebra I EOC score of level II or higher paired with an Algebra II passing course grade. TSIA- Texas Success Initiative Assessment. This is the new standard Texas exam that replaced COMPASS, THEA, and Accuplacer. If you will be taking the TSIA, please log on to and go to the third page to complete the pre-assessment. Print that pre-assessment and come to the dual credit office for a testing request form. This is a free test and on a walk-in basis.

11 STEP #4 Bacterial Meningitis Immunization Submit proof of current Bacterial Meningitis Immunization to the Office of Enrollment Services, S6.161

13 STEP #5 Register for Classes Dual Credit students must register in person at the campus Dual Credit Office (Suite S8-1000). Dual Credit Student do not have access to web or phone registration. Register in person 8:00 am 4:00 PM, Monday Thursday Know the day and time of when you would like your classes. If you take classes other than the reserved Dual Credit sections, bring the 5-digit CRN (Course Reference Number). Use the online Course Finder tool from the SJC website.

14 STEP #6 Obtain the Dual Credit Waiver and Pay Your College Tuition Payment of tuition and fees are due when you register. You will be given a 70% Dual Credit Fee Waiver at the time your register. Waiver is to be immediately taken to the Business Office. Payment must be made at this time to avoid being dropped from classes. 15 STEP #7 Buy or Rent your Course Textbooks Dual Credit student, like all college students, are responsible for purchasing the required textbooks and other essential course materials. Textbooks may be purchased at the SJC Campus Bookstore, S

Many variations can be made with their approval. Students will typically take the year long sequence listed above and then pair another course with it each semester from the box below. Students take two courses per semester. Students can come in the summers to gain additional coursework. 17 Cost Benefits Dual Credit at San Jacinto College is affordable. You pay only 30% of tuition and fees for classes that count toward both high school and college. 18 Financial Aid You may qualify for the Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) to cover your share of the tuition and fees. Grant has limited funding and is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. 20 FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) What is FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. Does FERPA give me a right to see education records of my son or daughter who is in college? When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, all rights afforded to you as a parent under FERPA transfer to the student. What if my child asked me to register them or order a transcript? Students are free to give their S.O.S log-in information to their parents if they wish. The S.O.S account can be used to view an unofficial transcript, print a degree evaluation, order official transcripts for college/university applications, and check their class schedule.

21 Technical Dual Credit There are two types of Dual Credit: Academic Technical CBHS students have access to both. Technical Programs: Two programs are offered: HVAC and Cosmetology. Technical classes allow students to take college courses that count as electives on the HS side that can help them become employable upon high school graduation. Please contact your high school counselor if you are interested to see if this fits in your schedule.
