9 HEAVEN=COLLEGE Only way to success is to go to college Only 32% will earn a postsecondary degree or credential within 6 years of graduating from high school Only 40% of Americans earn an associate s or bachelor s degree by age 27 By the year % OF JOBS IN INDIANA WILL REQUIRE POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION Only 1/3 of those jobs in Indiana will require a 4 year degree Over 1/3 of jobs in Indiana will require postsecondary work with less than a 4 year degree
10 WHEN WE INSIST ALL STUDENTS GO TO A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE, TOO MANY GET LOST ALONG THE WAY. WILLIAM C. SYMONDS
11 WHERE ARE THE REST OF THEM GOING? College for All needs to be broadened to mean a meaningful post-high school credential for all or A meaningful credential can be earned in many ways: Community colleges/ Technical College with 2 year associates degrees or working to get into a 4 year college Apprenticeships/Certifications The military/community service Four year college
12 COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS We need to offer young people in high school multiple pathways to success, instead of putting so much emphasis on attending a four-year college. Students should have a ready access to a clearly delineated set of pathways to major occupations, so that both students and their families can know which classes and experiences would help a student interested in a career field gain access to it.
