Overview Advanced Standing fr Currently Licensed Practical Nurses fr the Assciate f Science (AS) Prfessinal Nursing Degree Prgram Currently licensed practical nurses (LPN) with unencumbered licenses are invited t apply with advanced standing t the Prfessinal Nursing (NPRO) Prgram at Minneaplis Cmmunity & Technical Cllege (MCTC). LPNs wh are admitted t the NPRO prgram receive five (5) credits f advanced standing, have limited labratry requirements in the first term, and d nt have any clinical requirements in the first term. As advanced-standing learners, LPNs take a ne-semester curse alngside their unlicensed peers t deepen their understanding f basic nursing practice and t begin their transitin frm practical t prfessinal nursing. Advanced-standing LPN learners jin their peers fr all classrm, labratry, and clinical learning in terms tw thrugh five t cmplete the requirements fr an Assciate f Science Degree and t sit fr the Natinal Cuncil Licensure Examinatin fr Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Authrizatin t take the NCLEX-RN cmes frm the Minnesta Bard f Nursing when graduates apply fr licensure as a RN. After passing the NCLEX-RN, licensure may be applied fr in any state. NPRO is a selective admissin prgram (yu must apply, meet qualificatins, and be admitted). Students wh are admitted t NPRO are dually admitted t Augsburg Cllege and prvisinally admitted t the Bachelr f Science in Nursing (BSN) cmpletin prgram. NPRO students wh successfully cmplete the prgram with a 2.5 GPA in nursing cursewrk and wh pass the NCLEX-RN are eligible t earn a BSN in as little as ne additinal year. Successful NPRO students may als cntinue their nursing educatin at ther clleges and universities that ffer a Baccalaureate nursing degree. MCTC als has articulatin agreements with Metrplitan State University, the Minnesta State Clleges and Universities cnsrtium, and ther private institutins. Tw chrts f advanced-standing NPRO students are admitted each year t begin cursewrk in the Fall semester: Mnday-Friday evening (classrm) + alternating weekends (labratry/clinical) chrt with NPRO curses n the MCTC campus, and Mnday-Friday daytime (classrm) and evening (labratry/clinical) chrt with NPRO curses n the Saint Paul Cllege campus. When applying t the NPRO Prgram with advanced standing, LPN applicants may indicate a preference fr the chrt they wish t be admitted t. Preferences will be hnred as far as pssible, but cannt be guaranteed. Applicants frm MCTC will be given first pririty fr the MCTC campus chrts, and applicants frm Saint Paul Cllege (SPC) will be given first pririty fr the SPC campus chrt. Each NPRO curse is 7 r 8 credits, and requires a cnsiderable amunt f utside-the-classrm study. NPRO curses must be taken in sequence nce NPRO cursewrk has begun. Students wh wish t cmplete their degree n a part-time basis shuld cmplete all general educatin requirements prir t admissin t the NPRO Prgram. Becming a prfessinal Registered Nurse is a serius cmmitment, requiring dedicatin and a desire fr excellence. Once NPRO cursewrk has begun, wrking mre than 15 hurs per week utside the Prgram is discuraged. Prfessinal Nursing Prgram with Advanced Standing Admissin Requirements In rder t submit yur Prfessinal Nursing Prgram applicatin (NPRO applicatin), yu must meet these requirements. Meeting the admissin requirements des nt guarantee admissin t the prgram. Applicants with a financial hld r wh are suspended r expelled fr academic r disciplinary reasns frm any cllege r university are nt eligible fr admissin t NPRO. Apply fr general admissin t MCTC. If yu are nt already a MCTC student, apply nline at www.minneaplis.edu/applynw and pay the general applicatin fee. Have a current and unencumbered license as a practical nurse (LPN). Yu must prvide verificatin f yur licensure in yur NPRO applicatin packet. Typically, this will be a printut frm the Minnesta Bard f Nursing website shwing that yu have a license, and that it is unencumbered (has n restrictins). Take the Test f Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS V). The TEAS V is a standardized natinal examinatin f basic learning skills. Research has shwn that applicants wh d well n the TEAS V are mre likely t be successful in nursing schl. Yu must achieve a scre f 62% r higher. MCTC recmmends that applicants review and prepare fr the TEAS, but des nt endrse any particular set f review r preparatin materials. Yu may take the TEAS V n mre than tw times between February 1, 2014 and January 31, 2015. If yu have tested mre than twice in that perid, we will nly cnsider yur first tw scres. The TEAS V is ffered at least fur times per year at MCTC, and is ffered in ther lcatins. The cst t take the TEAS V at MCTC will be less than $75 (as f June 2014, the cst is $66). Csts at ther lcatins will vary and may be as high as $120. When registering fr the TEAS V, yu must use yur name exactly as it appears n yur gvernment-issued pht identificatin (driver s license r passprt). Writing requirement ptins: - Cmplete ENGL 0900, ESOL 0051, ENGL 1110 r ENGA 1110 at MCTC with a letter grade f B r higher, r - At anther cllege, cmplete a writing curse that is a direct transfer equivalent t MCTC s ENGL 0900, ESOL 0051, r ENGL 1110 with a letter grade f straight B r higher, dcumented n cllege transcript (P (pass) is nt acceptable).
