ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION IN SCHOOL The Bard f Directrs and all staff at Redcar Academy wish t ensure that students medicatin needs receive apprpriate care and supprt at the Academy. The Headteacher will accept respnsibility in principle fr members f the staff giving r supervising students taking prescribed medicatin during the schl day where thse members f staff have vlunteered t d s. RESPONSIBILITY Parent/carers have the primary respnsibility fr their child s health and they shuld prvide infrmatin t the Academy abut their child s medical cnditin and hw t manage that cnditin whilst their child is at schl. This will be cmpleted thrugh a Healthcare Plan. There is n legal duty which requires the Academy t administer medicatin, hwever we d have a number f staff wh are trained in the apprpriate administratin f medicatin and vlunteer t supprt these needs in the Academy. Accurate recrds shuld be kept within the Academy fllwing the administratin f medicatin. Staff, primarily First Aid staff, are expected t use their best endeavurs at all times, particularly in emergencies. All staff will be infrmed f students wh have medical cnditins and be made aware f the lcatin f the Healthcare Plan. A Healthcare plan will be upladed t the students SIMS recrd by a designated member f staff. Parent/carers shuld keep their children at hme if they are acutely unwell r infectius. Advice n infectius diseases can be btained frm the Main Receptin with details f hw lng the students shuld be kept at hme. Parent/carers shuld ntify the Academy in writing if the student s need fr medicatin has ceased. Parent/carers must renew the medicatin when supplies are lw and ensure that medicatin that is with the Academy is kept within its expiry date. PROCEDURES Prescribed medicatin will nt be accepted in schl withut cmplete written and signed instructins frm the parent/carer (See resurces, Healthcare Plan) Staff will nt administer nn-prescribed medicine t a student unless there is specific prir written permissin frm the parent/carer Only reasnable quantities f medicatin shuld be supplied t the Academy (fr example, a maximum f fur weeks supply at any ne time) Each item f medicatin must be delivered t the Academy, in nrmal circumstances by the parent/carer, in a secure and labelled cntainer as riginally dispensed. Each item f medicatin must be clearly labelled with the fllwing infrmatin: Redcar Academy 2

Medicatin will be kept in a secure place. Unless therwise indicated, all medicatin will be kept in a lcked medicine cabinet. The Academy will keep recrds which will be available t parent/carers n request. If students refuse t take medicatin, staff will nt frce them t d s. Parent/carers will be infrmed immediate f the refusal. If a refusal t take medicatin results in an emergency, the nrmal Academy emergency prcedures will be fllwed. The Academy will nt dispse f medicatin. Medicatin which has expired will be made available fr cllectin by a parent/carer wh shuld take the medicatin t a cmmunity pharmacist fr safe dispsal. Where it is apprpriate t d s, students will be encuraged t administer their wn medicatin, if necessary under staff supervisin. Parent/carers will be asked t cnfirm in writing if they wish their child t carry their medicatin with them in schl. Staff wh vlunteer t assist in the administratin f medicatin will receive apprpriate training/guidance thrugh the arrangements made with the Schl Health Service. The Academy will make every effrt t cntinue the administratin f medicatin t a student whilst n trips away frm the Academy, even if additinal arrangements are required. Hwever, there may be ccasins where it may nt be pssible t include a student in a schl trip if apprpriate supervisin cannt be guaranteed. Redcar Academy 3
