Curse Descriptin This curse surveys the majr administrative appraches in public and private agencies that administer health prgrams. The ultimate gal f the curse is t assist students in understanding management principles in the American health care delivery system, including the rles f patients, third part insurance payers, and health care prfessinals. The curse presents cntemprary thinking abut management skills and cmpetencies, and hw management gets dne in health care rganizatins. The fcus is n (1) develping an understanding f management and rganizatinal prcesses which help r hinder successful task cmpletin (2) imprving interpersnal and diagnstic skills, and (3) develping an understanding f theretical knwledge related t rganizatinal design and behavir. Prerequisites Students are expected t have a wrking knwledge f rganizatinal and management principles acquired either thrugh experience within the business wrld, public sectr, r thrugh the cmpletin f apprpriate academic curses. Effective cmmunicatin skills at a level expected f thse wh have earned a bachelr's degree. Learning Outcmes: At the cnclusin f this curse students shuld have an understanding f the majr managerial cncepts that influence rganizatins in the health care sectr; behavir in rganizatins, alternative appraches t health care decisin-making, and majr leadership and management issues affecting health care rganizatins. While the primary audience is graduate students in health services administratin and management prgrams, the curse will als be useful t ther prfessinals wh will assume management respnsibilities r wh want t learn mre abut the rganizatin in which they will spend the majr prtin f their prfessinal lives. Specifically, the curse will enable students t: Relate the evlutin f classical and cntemprary managerial cncepts t health care rganizatins. 1
Identify the majr structural frces affecting the delivery f health services and understand hw these frces affect the rle f the health services manager. Understand hw t mtivate individuals t perfrm effectively in health services rganizatins. Understand the implicatins f current trends t the delivery f health care services. IV. Curse Methdlgy and Plicy The curse tpics will be cnveyed thrugh lectures, films, student presentatins, and grup discussins. Students are encuraged t participate extensively, t ask questins, express yur pinins, and t challenge ideas and cncepts. My teaching methdlgy attempts t tap the experience f students t emphasize the practical applicatin f theries in the real wrld. Als, I emphasize critical thinking, prblem slving, and reasning ver memrizatin. The intent is t prvide students with a practical understanding f management and human behavir by relating curse materials t acquired experience in health care rganizatins. V. Examinatins - Three (3) examinatins are scheduled, ne at the cnclusin f each majr curse cmpnent. The examinatins will cver all curse material and assigned readings during their respective perids. Please nte that the examinatins may include assigned readings that have nt been specifically discussed during class. Students with an unexcused absence frm a scheduled examinatin may be subject t a 5% grade penalty n the examinatin. 3. Attendance - Students are expected t attend class n a regular basis.
