Sun and Wind, new motors of desalination and its possibilities for mining Santiago de Chile, May 4 th. 2015
INDEX 1.- Scarcity water on mining sector 2.- Renewable energy sources for desalination 3.- Idom: your Travelling Companion
CURRENTLY SITUATION Mining is the largest economic sector in Chile, with over than 15% of the Gross Domestic Product. Water consumption in mining sector represents 10% of total. Growth foarcasting: 200%, increase of the water demand.
CURRENTLY SITUATION Problematic: Mining sector is mainly in the North of the country, where there is the most water-scarcity.
ALTERNATIVE: DESALINATION OF SEA WATER Several SWRO Plants of mining companies are in operation or in development: Escondida (Puerto Coloso) Codelco (Radomiro Tomic) Cerro Negro (Tortoralillo) Candelaria (Puerto de Punta Padrones) Doña Inés de Collahuasi and so on. MED, MSF, MVC, Reverse Osmosis
CAPEX: 1,000 2,000 US$/m3 [1] SWRO El Prat (Spain)
3.1 km ~ 50% OPEX in a SWRO Plant = Energy - Osmotic Pressure (~ 2.0 kw h/m3) - Pumping water Minera Escondida (Chile) 180 km Energy Percentage of the operating budget for a mine: 15 40 %
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES 1.- Wind. Estimated energy potential: 40 GW, [2]. 2.- Sun. Estimated energy potential: 40 GW, [3]. Atacama Desert receives up to 9.3 kwh of sunlight daily, [4]. 3.- Geothermal. Estimated energy potential: 16 GW, [4]. 4.- Biomass. Currently, Chile has over 300 MW of installed capacity of biomass power, and over 170 MW under construction, [5]. 5.- Hidropower. Estimated energy potential: 9 GW, [6].
