3 Feranova GmbH was founded in 2005 as a project development company in the field of renewable energy. Our company is headquartered in Westerkappeln near Osnabrück in northern Germany. A subsidiary was opened in Istanbul, Turkey in From 2008 onwards, Feranova has been developing technologies based on Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), aspiring to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of pre-existing industrial plants and power supply solutions. Photovoltaics is another business area in which Feranova strives to promote solar energy. 4 CSP Concentrated Solar Power What is CSP? Concentrated solar power technologies concentrate Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) direct sunlight that is not deviated by clouds or dust and reaches Earth by parallel beams. CSP s leading product is thermal energy. Suitable regions for this technology include Southern Europe, the Middle East, northern and southern Africa, South America and south-western USA, ideally those located between the latitudes of 40 north and south. Up to 70 % of the solar energy that is collected can be converted into thermal energy. This emission-free energy can be used for several applications. How do Linear Fresnel Collectors work? Feranova Reflect Technology (FRT) Linear Fresnel Collectors have several rows of mirrors that are arranged parallel to each other in a north/ south direction. These rows of mirrors track the sun by means of motors which facilitate the best position possible in order to reflect the sun s beams onto the receiver system. A device known as the absorber tube is installed within the receiver system several meters above the mirrors. The absorber carries a heat fluid (thermal oil, water/steam or molten salt) that is heated by the concentrated rays of sunlight and sent to a heat exchanger where the energy is then fed into the customer s intake point. Depending on the customer s individual needs, temperatures and pressure can be adjusted. 5 4. Process heat and steam for industrial applications 3. FRT Collectors are directly connected to the plant s heat intake point for the utilization of the solar energy (e.g. companies in mining, textile manufacturing, food processing, desalination plants etc.). Companies can decrease their fuel costs and emission whilst simultaneously reducing their reliance on fossil fuels Our process heat and steam FRT Applications start at a capacity of 750 kw th. They can either be connected to pre-existing heat or steam circuits or they can be integrated into the design of new plants Stand alone power plants FRT Collectors are utilized in a stand-alone facility in conjunction with a conventional steam turbine and thereby produce electricity which can be directly fed into the grid. Stand-alone solar power plants usually start at a size of 10 MW el up to several hundred MW el In order to increase a system s efficiency and to also generate more electricity, FRT Collectors can also be connected to a heat storage facility as well as to gas-fired boilers/ supplementary co-firing system Hybrid power plants FRT Collectors can be used for steam augmentation in gas or coal fired power stations. The produced solar energy is fed directly either into the steam turbine or into the heat recovery steam generator. 6 Feranova CSP Collector Cost-effective The cost advantages of the FRT Collector stem from its innovative design. The collector s parts are all specially designed to allow for optimum transportation and rapid on-site installation. Furthermore, no costly substructure is needed. Several protective modes for all kinds of weather and operating conditions are included in order to prevent damage to the mirror elements. 8 Dependable and cost-efficient power generation Boosting plant efficiency In order to generate electricity, the FRT Collectors need to be connected to a conventional steam turbine. The Solar Field can either be used by itself (the CSP stand-alone option) or in combination with a conventional gas or coal power plant (the hybrid option). The CSP hybrid power plant not only helps to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and thereby costs, but also decreases pollutant emissions. CSP stand alone power plants become even more efficient if a booster is integrated into the system. By combining the solar energy with relatively small amounts of fossil energy (usually natural gas), the turbine s input temperature is increased. This results in increased power plant efficiency and as a result, the solar energy is used more resourcefully. Feranova accompanies and supports its customers through every step of the process; starting from preliminary project inquiries and the selection of power plant components right through to the installation, operation and maintenance of the solar power plant. 9 Flexibility and reliability In contrast to Photovoltaics, CSP systems can operate as base load power plants. This means that the fed-in power remains constant throughout the whole day which makes this power plant more predictable and more flexible for utilities. The energy is as available and reliable as conventional energy, and this remains so even when the sun is not shining. The base load effect can also be achieved by implementing a thermal storage system. This system which further boosts the efficiency of the power plant is also offered by Feranova. Solar energy after sundown In order to fulfill one s nighttime energy demands, a heat storage system can be connected to the FRT Solar Field. The heat storage system continues to supply heat for a predefined time so that solar energy can be used to generate electricity even during the evening hours. This in turn means that the FRT Solar Field will sometimes be producing surplus power; whatever portion of the heat that is not fed into the plant s circuit can be instead directed into the storage facility. It will then be delivered into the power plant s circuit after dark, thereby increasing the energy production time of the power plant. Thanks to the flexible use of receivers and the FRT Collector, Feranova CSP systems can store solar heat up to a temperature of 550 C, which is significantly higher than parabolic trough systems. Since the storage medium allows for higher temperatures, more heat can be captured with the same unit which again increases the heat storage s efficiency while also reducing storage costs. 10 Turkey s first industrially used Linear Fresnel Collector The costs associated with process heat energy production can work out to be as high as 35 % of a company s production costs. It is therefore crucial for any industry to strive for increased efficiency and productivity in this area. With the installation of Turkey s first Linear Fresnel Collector in industrial use, Feranova has demonstrated that solar energy for process heat applications is already competitive even at today s market prices. The collector was installed in 2012 at the site of Turkey s leading mining group, and has since helped to decrease LNG usage in the group s ore drying process. 10
