Palomar College Dial-up Remote Access Instructions for Windows 95/98 and Windows 2000 Following are instructions to implement dialup access to the Palomar College network, email and Internet. The minimum requirement is Windows 95 and a 14.4k modem. Prior to installation, you must contact the Information Services department for an authentication account and password. Please call extension 2140 so that a project # may be created. A technician will contact you. Step 1 - Modem Configuration: NOTE: Have modem documentation available prior to installation. Click the START button and select SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL Double-click using the left mouse button on the MODEMS icon. If a modem is present do not make any changes and skip to page 3 MODEM PROPERTIES. If there is no modem present, the following screen should appear. Click NEXT and Windows will attempt to auto-detect your modem. If Windows is able to detect your modem go to MODEM PROPERTIES instructions. If Windows is unable to detect your modem, it must be added manually and the INSTALL NEW MODEM window will appear. Select your modem and click NEXT. If Windows is unable to detect your modem, it must be added manually and the INSTALL NEW MODEM window will appear. Select your modem and click NEXT.

Select a COM port and then click NEXT (the mouse is generally set to COM 1 in most cases if it is a serial mouse so COM 2 is usually available). Click FINISH so that Windows 95 can add your modem to the system. Go to MODEMS (under START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL) and double-click on the icon for MODEM PROPERTIES. MODEM PROPERTIES Under the GENERAL tab select PROPERTIES. Using the following table, select the maximum speed at which your modem can connect. MODEM SPEED SETTING 14.4K 57500 28.8K 115200 33.6K and up 115200 If high error rates occur set speed to 19200. 2

Next click on the CONNECTION tab and select the following: 8 data bits, parity = NONE, and 1 stop bit. Click-on the ADVANCED button and choose HARDWARE FLOW CONTROL then click-on OK. Click OK on the MODEM PROPERTIES dialogue box. Click on the DIALING PROPERTIES button and set properties such as call waiting option, area code, etc. as appropriate for your location. Click the CLOSE button to finish. 3

Step 2 - Dial-Up Adapter Installation: NOTE: PLEASE HAVE YOUR WINDOWS 95 CD-ROM AVAILABLE PRIOR TO THIS INSTALLATION. Click the START button and select SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL Double-click on the NETWORK icon. If Dial-Up Adapter already appears as an installed component, skip to step 3 Dial-up Network Installation. Otherwise, click ADD. At the SELECT NETWORK COMPONENT TYPE screen, highlight ADAPTER and click ADD. 4

Under Manufacturers in the SELECT NETWORK ADAPTERS, select MICROSOFT and under NETWORK ADAPTERS select DIAL-UP ADAPTER. Click OK. Click ADD, select PROTOCOL, and click ADD again. Under Manufacturer in the SELECT NETWORK PROTOCOL screen, select MICROSOFT. Under the Network protocols, select TCP/IP. At this point the system may request that you insert your Windows 95 CD-Rom. After Windows 95 copies the appropriate files, you will be asked to reboot. Reboot and go to Step 3 - Dial-Up Network Installation. Step 3 - Dial-Up Network Installation: NOTE: GO TO MY COMPUTER TO LOCATE THE DIAL-UP NETWORKING ICON. IF IT IS THERE, SKIP THIS STEP AND GO TO Step 4 - Dial-Up Networking Connection Configuration. Click the START button and select SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL. Select the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon and choose the WINDOWS SETUP tab. Highlight COMMUNICATIONS and click on DETAILS button. Check the DIAL-UP NETWORKING box and click OK. 5

Step 4 - Dial-Up Networking Connection Configuration Go to START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES and DIAL-UP NETWORKING. Double-click on MAKE NEW CONNECTION. Type a name such as PALOMAR for the computer you are dialing. Click NEXT and add the phone for the coast area # 433-9541 or inland area 480-9679 then click FINISH. Right-click on the PALOMAR connection and click on the SERVER TYPE button. On the SERVER TYPES button, the TYPE OF DIAL-UP SERVER should be PPP, WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS NT 3.5,INTERNET. Under ADVANCED OPTIONS check mark the following: LOG ON TO NETWORK, ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION. Make sure that the only ALLOWED NETWORK PROTOCOL checked is TCP/IP. Click on the TCP/IP SETTINGS button. Check SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS. Next, click on SERVER ASSIGNED NAME SERVER ADDRESSES. 6

Click OK. INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE! To connect to the network and Internet: Go to MY COMPUTER and double-click the PALOMAR icon (or the name you have given this remote connection). Insert the username and password assigned to you by Information Services. You may click SAVE PASSWORD if you want. Click the CONNECT button and you should hear your modem dialing. An authentication screen will appear letting you know that you are connecting to the network. If you did not click-on SAVE PASSWORD, a screen will appear asking that you enter your password.
