AG SITRANS RD500 Configuring the RD500 with PSTN or GSM modems and Windows-based servers and clients for communication Objective: Determine how to configure the RD500 and your PSTN or GSM modem APPLICATION GUIDE While every effort was made to verify the following information, no warranty of accuracy or usability is expressed or implied. Overview: This application guide is an addition to the operating instructions. Please review RD500 Application operating instructions to ensure you are familiar with configuring the RD500. Setting up PSTN or GSM modems using CSD connection on the SITRANS RD500 RD500 setup Use a PSTN modem that supports AT command set. For your modem settings, please use the screenshot as an example If GSM Circuit switched connection is to be used, select GSM CSD under Type. Mode allows the RD500 to be set up as a client (dial out client) which will dial the intended server/recipient to send data updates or the RD500 can be set up as a server (dial in server) to receive calls from remote client/server. Be sure to check your modem s AT settings for best communication with the server; the RD500 Default init string settings should typically work. When the RD500 is set up as a dial-out client, enter your phone number for dial out client connections: this is the phone number of the remote server. Be sure to check with your server administrator for your network account information: do not confuse the network account information with the FTP server login information. Enter the network login user name and login password as provided by the server administrator in the login and password fields on the RD500. Ask your server network administrator for your local IP address information (IP address of the RD500, typically second IP address in the address range) and the remote server IP address (first IP address in the range) and enter the information in local, remote,
and mask address fields in the RD500. (For the mask address, usually the default setting is correct, but confirm with your server administrator.) Set your client connection to On Demand which will ensure the RD500 only connects during the data sync periods. For GSM modems, SMS messaging will be available for alarming. For alarming, your server administrator will need to provide you with the SMTP mail server and FTP server information on the dialup network that is being contacted. This will allow alarming, reporting and FTP sync to take place. Please see FTP client and SMTP client configuration pages on the RD500 and provide the requested server data. Press FTP sync to test your connection: For confirmation that your connection is working, you should see UP in the modem status field (your local IP address here) and your FTP logs should be sent to the FTP server. Setting up Windows-based servers to accept calls from remotely configured RD500s: Windows PPP network setup for RD500: To set up an incoming PSTN or GSM PPP network connection allowing the RD500 to send calls to your central server: For Windows XP: 1. Start > Settings > Network Connections > New Connection Wizard, or you can access Network Connections from the Control Panel window.
2. Click Next. 3. Select Accept incoming connections and click Next.
4. Select your connected modem and click Next. 5. Click Do not allow virtual private connections and click Next.
6. Select the account that you wish the incoming RD500 to use to connect to your server. For best results, it is recommended that a new account be created. Be sure the new account is enabled with sufficient rights and that your firewall settings allow for remote connection to the server. 7. Enter the login name and password of the Windows account that the RD500 will use to connect to the server. This info will be populated in the RD500 under Network modem settings Login username and login password.
8. Click OK and then click Next on the user permission screen 9. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. 10. Select Allow callers to access my local area network. 11. Select Specify TCP/IP addresses and populate the range of IP addresses you would like to use the first IP address will be given to your server ( as shown above, for example) while the connected RD500 will take the next IP address ( as shown above, for example).
This IP information should be entered into your RD500 network modem information. For the case shown above, the information would be entered as follows: Local address: Remote address: Now click OK, and then Finish. Your new incoming modem connection is now set up. Initiate an FTP synchronization from RD500 to test your new connection. The FTP server address could be the same address as your Windows server: first IP address in the range defined in step 12 (in this case ). The FTP server IP address could
differ as long as it is on the network being contacted and the address is in the range of addresses setup under TCP/IP address assignment. Setting up a Windows-based computer to initiate calls to the SITRANS RD500: To set up an outgoing PSTN or GSM PPP network connection allowing remote access to RD500 set up as dial-in server: 1. Start the New connection wizard as shown below to create a dialup connection for the SITRANS RD Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
3. Click Setup my connection manually and click Next. 4. Select Connect using dialup modem and click Next.
5. Enter a name for your connection and click Next. 6. Enter the telephone number of the modem connected to the SITRANS RD500 and click Next.
7. Select who can use the connection and click Next. 8. Enter the user name and password for the SITRANS RD500. This is the user name and password you have entered under the Network settings in the SITRANS RD500 s web interface, found at Configuration>Network>Login username and password in the RD500 application.
9. Select Finish to complete your dial connection. 10. Test your connection by clicking on the new dial up connection you have just made.
11. In the dialog box, click Dial to initiate the connection. 12. Once the modems have established a connection, the dialog box will disappear. 13. Open you web browser and enter the IP address of the RD500 in the URL window. (The IP address is the local address that was entered into the RD500 web interface under Configuration>Network>Local Address). The default address is You will see the main login box for the RD500. Simply enter the user name and password to enter the RD500 s web interface. Default login details are User Name: admin, Password: rd500.
You are now connected to the RD500 and have full access to all of the connected device information available on the RD500.
While every effort was made to verify the following information, no warranty of accuracy or usability is expressed or implied.
