For Windows NT 4.0 Server or Workstation You should have the following two components installed before you use GRICdial: Service Pack 3, or better Dial-Up Networking * If your computer is able to connect to the Internet and has already been upgraded with Service Pack 3, please skip this, otherwise obtaining and Installing Service Pack 3: Please contact your system administrator or visit Microsoft web site Installing Dial-Up Networking: To verify if Dial-Up Networking is installed, double-click on the My Computer from your desktop, and double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon to open it. If the Install button is present, then Dial-Up Networking is not installed. To install it, insert the Windows NT CD-ROM and click on the Install button, and follow these steps: In the Add RAS Device window, select the modem you are going to use and click OK. If you use NT Workstation, click Continue in the Remote Access Setup window, and go to the next step. If you use NT Server, click Configure..., and select Dial out only, or Dial out and Receive calls depending on your situation. Click OK, click Continue. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the installation. After Dial-Up Networking and RAS are successfully installed, restart your computer. Getting Connected Step 1: Search and select a network access point. To select a network access point (also known as POP - Point of Presence), you can perform a multiple criteria (either or, and) search by Country, State, City, and/or Area Code (Fig. 1). Search by Country: Click on the Country pop-up list to select the country that you are dialing from. If that country is not on the list, select the nearest country. In this example, the country selected is United States. Search by State: Select the State from the city pop-up list. If the State is not on the list, try search by city. In this example, the State selected is New York. Search by City: Select the City from the city pop-up list. If the city is not on the list, select the nearest city. Search by Area / City Code: Specify the Area / City Code by entering it directly into the search box. Note: searching on an Area/City Code while a Country is selected will restrict the search to just that country. A list of all available POPs will be displayed on the right hand side of the screen. If your search results in multiple POPs in the area that you specified, you can choose one from the list. To reset the search criteria, click the on Reset button. If you wish to view the information for a particular POP, click on the Detail button from the main GRICdial menu. It brings up the window shown in Fig. 2. It displays information such as ISP name, customer support number, news server, and the settings configuration for the POP currently on the screen. Step 2: Specify Login ID and password. 2
After you have selected the network access phone number that you wish to dial into, click on the button from the GRICdial main window to initiate the connection process. The User Information screen will now appear.. Have your Roaming User name and password information from LoxInfo ready. In order to access the Internet via the GRIC Network, you will need to apply for a valid login ID and password for roaming service from LoxInfo. We strongly recommend contacting your ISP's help desk for details on "Internet roaming" using the GRIC Global Internet Roaming Network. The format of the user name is typically username@hostname.loxinfo.co.th, for example: john@bkk4.loxinfo.co.th. Specify the User name, password at the User Information window. Enter your User name in the Login ID field which is in the upper section (i.e., your_username@bkk4.loxinfo.co.th) - check with the user and password confirmation mail or document from LoxInfo. Enter your password in the Password field. Checking the Save password box at the corner allows you to save your password. Verify, and modify if necessary, the Phone Number to be Dialed. Click on the Dial Properties... button opens the Dialing Properties window to set your current "dial from" location, thus specifying any applicable dialing rules. (See below for Dialing Properties information.) Verify any outside line access requirements such as dial 9 to access outside line. Disable call waiting by specifying disabling dial pattern such as "*70,". When done, click OK - this will bring you back to the User Information window. Step 4: Establish connection. From the User Information window, verify the numbers in the "Phone Number to be Dialed" box. This is the exact output string. If modification to the final output phone number, change it directly into the box. Click the button to initiate the modem connection.. If you don't wish to dial the POP you just selected, you may click the button to cancel the connection, and it will return you to the GRICdial Main window. Additional Settings Dialing Properties It is highly advised to modify/update the dialing properties according to your present location in order to activate the appropriate dialing rules. To modify "your present location", click the button in the User Information window to bring up the Dialing Properties screen. The last location that you dialed from is also displayed as "your present location" in the lower portion of the User Information window the next time you use GRICdial. The I am dialing from pop-up list shows all the profiles that are available. To change it to your new "present location", you may have to create a new location profile: Click on the New... button A dialog box will prompt you to enter the new location name ( e.g.. Japan-Hotel). When you finish typing, click "Ok" to close the dialog box or go straight to select the country. Enter the area code, and select the country of your current location. If required, enter the other settings for dialing, such as: Access numbers to gain an outside line Enable a Calling Card number To enable or disable call waiting To specify Tone or Pulse dialing When you finish with the Dialing Properties, click on "OK" to go back to the User Information window for dialing. 3
NOTE: You can create as many locations as you like. Each time you dial, just select one from the locations in the I am dialing from pop-up menu list, or create a new location. The last location you dialed from will be displayed as "your present location" in the User Information window the next time you use GRICdial. Multiple Modems If you have multiple modems installed in your computer, you can select the modem to be used by going to My computer, and clicking on the Dial-Up Networking icon. Right-click on the "GRIC" icon to display Properties and select General. Move down to Connect Using, above the modem icon, and select the modem to be used from the list. * Note: For NT 4.0, a known bug in Microsoft Remote Access Service will reset the selected modem to the first available modem. Microsoft expects to have this problem fixed in a new service pack. Install only one modem to avoid this problem. Using Calling Card To use a calling card, do the following: Click on Dial Properties in the User Information window. This will bring up the Dialing Properties window. Checking the box next to the Dialing Using Calling Card or For long distance calls, use this calling card option to bring up or enable the following screen (this screen maybe look differently on your version of Microsoft Windows): Select one of the options in the Calling Card pop-up list. The selected calling card is now displayed on the screen. If necessary, create a new calling card by clicking the New... or Calling Card... button, which will brings up a dialog box. Fill in the necessary information in the fields provided and exit the dialog box by clicking on "OK". To delete a calling card from the list, select it from the Calling Card to use pop-up list and click on the Remove button. A dialog box will prompt you to verify the removal of the selected calling card. Click "Yes" or "No". For additional information or assistance regarding Dial-Up Networking, Dialing Properties, calling card interface procedures, or related problems, please consult your computer's owner's manual. Updating International Dialing Code Since dialing rules may change in a particular country, Microsoft adds a section [CountryOverrides] in the Telephon.ini to keep track of those changes. Each time a country changes its dialing rule, the [CountryOverrides] section needs to be added or changed. In the following example, the Czech Republic changes its international dialing code. To make the changes, you modify the Telephon.ini file as follows : 1. Use Notepad to open the C:/Windows/Telephon.ini 2. Under the section header [CountryOverrides], enter the line Country420=420,421,"Czech Republic","G","0FG","00EFG" 3. Save and exit Notepad. Main Menu Functions File / Update Phonebook You must be logged on before you can use this option. Selecting this option will manually send a query to the central database to update the list of network access points. This is helpful prior to traveling abroad. 4
Go This menu option stores the last 10 (by default) network access numbers that has been dialed successfully. If you wish to dial any one of these numbers again, you may select them from this menu and click "Connect". GRIC Roaming FAQ What is the GRIC Network and what does this dialer do? 7
The GRIC Network is an alliance of Internet service providers that users can access to establish Internet connectivity with a local call. The GRICdial is an utility application for locating and connecting to the nearest GRIC Network access point. GRICdial will automatically setup the necessary dialup networking configurations in the background. How do I use the GRIC network? How do I obtain a username and password? In order to access the Internet via the GRIC Network, the user must use a valid username and password from LoxInfo. We strongly recommend contacting your ISP's help desk for details on "Internet roaming" using the GRIC Network. The format of the user name is typically username@host_name.loxinfo.co.th Example: john@bkk4.loxinfo.co.th. Why does the phone number listed in GRICdial not respond? Occasionally the local ISP may change or delete the phone number. Always update your phonebook before your next trip. How do I update my phonebook? First you need to connect to the Internet. Then in the GRICdial main window, select the File menu, and click on Update Phonebook... Why does GRICdial not recognize the dial tone on the hotel phone system? This is because the hotel phone system is a digital PBX (Private Branch exchange) system, and you are using an analog modem. You need a switch to connect the modem to the handset interface, and allow the phone to perform the analog to digital conversion. For more information, visit TeleAdapt Online I am in a hotel and I need to dial a number to access an outside line, where should I enter it? You may enter it in the Dialing Properties window's "To access an outside line, first dial:" fields. To bring up the Dialing Properties window, click on the "Dial Properties..." button in the User Information window. How do I enter a dialing code before the phone number? To learn how to use calling card, please refer to Calling Card section in GRICdial User's Guide. Or to manually insert a dialing code (e.g. calling card code, saving plan code, etc.) before the number GRICdial is going to dial, you may enter it in the Dialing Properties window's "To access an outside line, first dial:" fields. The dialing rule in this country has changed, what do I do? Use the solution provided in the next two questions. How to change international dialing access codes? Since dialing rules may change in a particular country, Microsoft adds a section [CountryOverrides] in the Telephon.ini to keep track of these changes. Each time a country changes its dialing rule, the [CountryOverrides] section needs to be added or changed. In this example, the Czech Republic changes its international dialing code. To accommodate these changes, you must modify the Telephon.ini file as described below: 1. Use the Notepad to open C:/Windows/Telephon.ini 2. Under the section header [CountryOverrides], enter the line Country420=420,421,"Czech Republic","G","0FG","00EFG" 3. Save and exit the Notepad. This solution is for Windows 95 only. For more information, please visit the Microsoft web site Or you may manually enter the dialing code in GRICdial. Refer to the next question. In this country, there are two phone systems, and they use different dialing rules, how do I ask GRICdial to use the one I prefer? GRICdial uses the default rule set up in Windows, but you can fool it by setting your present location in the same area as the phone number. You can then put whatever you want in the Dialing Properties window's "To access an outside line, first dial:" fields. 8
When I dial, I receive a "Cannot open the phone book file." message, what is wrong? You need to have Dial-Up Networking installed. For installation information and other required components, refer to the System Requirements section in the GRICdial User's Guide. When I dial, I receive a "No PPP control protocols configured." message, what is wrong? You need to have TCP/IP protocol for Dial-Up Networking installed. For installation information, refer to the System Requirements section in the GRICdial User's Guide. When I launch GRICdial, I receive a error message "Initialization of the dynamic link library C:\WINNT\System32\rasman.dll failed. The process is terminating abnormally.", what is wrong? You need to have Dial-Up Networking installed. For installation information and other required components, refer to the System Requirements section in the GRICdial User's Guide. After I change the setting in Dial-Up Networking's GRIC entry, GRICdial no longer works, what should I do? You should delete this entry, and use GRICdial as usual. GRICdial will create this entry again with the default setting. I have two modems on my computer, how do I ask GRICdial to use the one I prefer? Refer to the Multiple Modems section in the GRICdial User's Guide. For NT 4.0, a known bug in Microsoft Remote Access Service will reset the selected modem to the first available modem. Microsoft expects to have this problem fixed in a new service pack. Install only one modem to avoid this problem. Why does the dialup window keep reappearing while entering the password? Use the complete User name (i.e., john@bkk4.loxinfo.co.th) as your username and then your roaming password. Access is denied? The local ISP may not recognise your account. Make sure you are using your complete address as your login ID, and then your regular password. If the problem persists, please call the support number listed in the ISP Information window of the number you are trying to dial. You can bring it up by clicking the Detail... button in the GRICdial main window. I get connected and all..., but why does it frequently disconnect me or say that it was an unreliable connection? The most probable cause could be the noisy phone lines, or your hotel PBX system. The best solution is to do the following: If you are using Windows 95, go to My Computer-> Dialup Networking-> right click on GRIC icon- >Properties-> Configure-> reduce the Maximum speed. If you are using Windows NT, go to My Computer-> Dialup Networking-> select GRIC in "Phonebook entry to dial..."-> More-> Edit entry and modem properties...-> Configure-> reduce the Initial speed. I am able to receive but why am I not able to send ? Your ISP may be blocking out s from Foreign ISPs to avoid spamming. You need to setup the SMTP server. For setting up the SMTP, see the topic Setting up SMTP Server for your client. My connection is fine, and I have no problems with , but why am I unable to surf the web? Most probably the proxy settings between LoxInfo and the ISP you are dialing into are clashing. This setting is in your web browser (either your Internet Explorer or your Netscape). The proxy configuration you will need is listed in the ISP Information window of the number you dial. For Proxy settings, see the topic Setting up Proxy server configurations. 9
