Project Team: Description The previous slide showed an image of the project team membership logo s. The project team includes MassDOT as the lead agency, Howard Stein Hudson assisting with public involvement and MIG corporation as the general contractor.

Project Site: Description The previous slide showed an image of the project site. The Belmont Street Bridge is highlighted in orange and carries Belmont Street (Route 9) over I-290. Pedestrian improvements at the intersection of Edward Street and Belmont Street are included in the project and highlighted in orange to the west of the Belmont Street Bridge.

Our Goal: Description The previous slide showed an image of the existing Belmont Street Bridge. The Belmont Street Bridge carries Belmont Street (Route 9) over I-290. The bridge has been determined structurally deficient and reaching the end of it s useful life.

Project Time Line: Description The previous slide showed an image of the project timeline. Notice to Proceed was issued on October 15, 2014 and ongoing work has included tree protection, snow fencing, construction signage, and the installment of the temporary pedestrian bridge. Upcoming work include utility adjustments, readying the temporary pedestrian bridge for use, removal of the north sidewalk, and ongoing work on I-290.

Phase 1 - Construction
Phase 1 Construction: Description The previous slide showed an image of phase 1 of construction on the Belmont Street Bridge. Phase 1 of construction is anticipated to start in November of 2015. During phase 1of construction, work will take place on the southerly part of the bridge while traffic is shifted to the north.

Phase 2 - Construction
Phase 2 Construction: Description The previous slide showed an image of phase 2 of construction. Phase 2 of construction is anticipated to start in June of 2016 During phase 2 of construction, work will take place on the northerly part of the bridge while traffic is shifted to the south.

Detour Plan
Detour Plan: Description The previous slide showed an aerial of the detour plan associated with the reconstruction of the Belmont Street Bridge. The detour plan has been implemented as a result of the restricted left turn from Belmont Street onto the I-290 on-ramp. The detour route utilize Major Taylor Boulevard and Shrewsbury Street to access I-290.

Completion: Description The previous slide showed an image of the completed Belmont Street Bridge road configuration. As part of the new structure, a left-turn only lane will be provided to access the I-290 onramp as well as reduce queuing on the bridge itself.

The completed structure roadway configuration will include 2 eastbound and 2 westbound travel lanes with an additional designated left-turn heading west.

Pedestrian Improvements RRFB: Description The previous slide showed a photograph of rectangular rapid flashing beacons. Rectangular rapid flashing beacons improve pedestrian safety by alerting motorist that a pedestrian is crossing the street. This photograph was take in Jamaica Plain on Washington Street.
UMass Medical/Edward Street Crossing
UMass Medical/Edward Street Crossing: Description The previous slide showed an aerial of the new pedestrian crosswalk in front of the UMass Memorial Health Center. The image highlights the removal of 2 crosswalks and installment of a new crosswalk. The project scope was expanded to include this intersection after concern was voiced over pedestrian safety at this location.

In addition to the new crosswalk the intersection will have rectangular rapid flashing beacons and a luminescent light to increase safety for pedestrian crossings.

Temporary Pedestrian Bridge Detour: Description The previous slide showed an image of the detour plan associated with the installment of the temporary pedestrian bridge. The detour plan was implemented to ensure a safe installment of the temporary structure. The temporary pedestrian bridge has been set and the detour plan is no longer active.
