Relax. Free day. 1 night hotel. Please check in with leader upon arrival. Group to meet for dinner and have initial orientation. Hotel. Includes breakfast and tea upon arrival. Group dinner. Transfer from airport to hotel. Please provide flight details to leader so we can accommodate hotel transfer. (Plan for your arrival and any snacks or lunch you might need). Group dinner is included. 2 May 27, Group meets in the morning at the hotel for breakfast. Then we go on the half-day Cusco city tour, visit Inca sites, and have lunch. In the afternoon, we visit the markets to buy things for the volunteer day (plus opportunity to buy personal things). *Shopping at markets for volunteer project, and any purchases, is OPTIONAL (not required). 3 May 28, 4 May 29, 5 May 30, 6 May 31, Rainbow Mountain trek. Have breakfast and leave by 7:30 a.m. for Rainbow Mountain trek. We ll arrive the trail head by noon to have lunch. We'll hike for 2 hours, visit a village, and camp for the night. Leave other belongings at hotel in Cusco. Pack what you need for overnight camping. In the morning, we have an early breakfast at 6:30 a.m. and leave by 7:30 a.m. to hike 2 hours to reach the summit (5,000 meters; approximately 16,000 feet). We ll spend about 30 minutes and hike our way down for 1 1/2 hours, have lunch, and hike down 2 hours more. Return to Cusco by 7-8 p.m. In the evening: Prepare for volunteer project and Lares Trek. This is a good time to separate day pack items from overnight items. It s also the time to get any (small) cash that you want to take with you trekking for the next several days. Volunteer day. In Cusco, have early breakfast at hotel and leave by 5:30 for Waca Wasi. This time, we take everything with us. We'll arrive by 10-11 a.m. Volunteer day at Waca Wasi teaching (Wilderness) First Aid, play with the children, and return to Lares by 4:00 for a soak in the hot springs. Have dinner and stay at a hostel in Lares. Prepare for Lares Trek. Separate day back from overnight pack. Lares Trek. Wake up and leave by 5:30 a.m. for Quishuarani to begin the Lares Trek, arriving by 6:30 a.m. We will have breakfast there and begin our trek after we eat. We will see many farmers and villagers along the way. If you d like to bring little gifts to hand out along the way, be sure to pack them in your day pack. We will have horses to carry our other things. The villagers may also be selling textiles and refreshments, so make sure you bring enough soles to make your purchases. In the morning, you can expect to hike up 3 hours to 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) and hike down 2 hours to 3,700 meters where we will have a much-deserved hot lunch. After lunch, we will hike 2 hours up to 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) and then down 2 hours to camp at 3,900 meters (12,795 feet). Along the way, we will take in spectacular scenery of lakes and peaks more than 6,000 meters high hovering over beautiful potato fields. We might even see chinchillas (rabbits with long tails) or herds of Andean alpacas and llamas. Total hiking distance this day will be 18 km (11 miles). 10 hours of hiking. We will begin our morning with a substantial breakfast and plan to leave by 7:30 a.m. to begin hiking. We will hike up to three different passes, reaching 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) and 4,700 meters (15,400). We will camp in the village of Huilloc at 3,700 meters (12,100 feet). Total distance this day will be 20 km (12 miles). 10 hours of hiking. Expect to see handcrafted textiles available for sale along our journey. Leisurely morning with opportunity to shop at textile shop in Huilloc. By 8 a.m. the driver will arrive with mountain bikes and we leisurely ride our bikes to Ollantaytambo. About 6-8 miles downhill. Non-technical bike ride/dirt road. The driver will take our overnight bags from Huilloc to the hotel in Ollanta. We arrive Ollanta by 10 a.m. and then go to do a zip line tour. Have lunch there. Return to Ollanta. Free time in evening to walk around Ollanta. Sacred Valley tour. After breakfast, we drive to and visit 3 Inca towns and sites: Pisac, Maray, Ollantaytambo and have lunch along the way. 10 June 4, 11 June 5, Machu Picchu. Early in the morning, we line up by 4:30 a.m. to take a 6:30 a.m. bus to Machu Picchu. We will have a 2 hour tour in Machu Picchu. By 9:30 a.m., we line up for the 10:00 a.m. queue to climb Huayna Picchu. About a 3 hour RT hike. We ll plan to return down to Machu Picchu by 1:00-1:30 and take a bus down to Aguas Calientes to have lunch by 2:00. Depending on availability of the train tickets, we ll aim for the 4:20 train to Ollantaytambo. If we get the 6:20 train, we can spend a little more time in Machu Picchu and have lunch up there, taking a later bus down to Aguas Calientes. But we need to plan ahead for the bus line. Arrive Ollantaytambo and spend the night there. Puno. After breakfast in Ollanta, we leave by 7:00 a.m. and take our private bus tour to Puno, visiting sites and having lunch along the way. We will visit 3 places along the way and arrive Puno by 5:30. Full day tour/transport. Have dinner in Puno and off to bed. B/L/D. Hotel. Entrance ticket to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Bus/Train/Driver transportation. B/L/D. Hotel. Transportation. English speaking tour. 12 June 6, Lake Titicaca Island Tour. Today we go to the reed floating island of Uros and the largest island Amantani. We will spend time with the people of each island and learn about their traditions. Each island is very unique. We will hike up to the highest point to an archeological site on Amantani and maybe watch the sunset. We will stay the night with a family and have dinner and breakfast the next morning with them. Payment to the family is included with the tour. But you might want to consider giving a small gift as a kind gesture for their hospitality. 13 June 7, 14 June 8, Lake Titicaca Tour and Puno. We say goodbye to our host families and finish our island tour with Taquile Island and learn about their unique traditions. We ll have lunch on the island. After lunch, we finish our tour of Taquile and make our way back to Puno. In the evening, we will have a little ceremony and final dinner as a group. Home or onward travel B/L/D. Transportation. English speaking tour. Hotel. Breakfast at hotel in Puno. Transfer to airport or bus station not included. Please talk to leader for help coordinating return. NOTE: With the exception of the hostel in Lares, hotel stays are 3 stars. Lares hostel is 2 star. Camping includes tent set-up and includes meals/meal tent. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and mattress pad. Water is boiled every day/meal. Bring your Nalgene or water bladder. Also NOTE: As for the volunteer portion, Project Inti is a 501c3 and any contributions you make towards donations to the village first aid project and/or distribute along the Lares Trek are eligible for tax deduction. This is not a requirement.
