Academic Preparatin and Perfrmance f Tw-Year Transfers, Divisin I vs. Divisin II Fall 2009 Chrt Fall Entrants Summary f Key Research Findings n Academic Perfrmance f Tw-Year Cllege Transfers N significant difference exists between tw-year cllege transfer students wh enrll at Divisin I and II institutins. Summary f Key Research Findings n Academic Perfrmance f Tw-Year Cllege Transfers In many sprts (e.g., men's basketball, wmen's basketball, ftball) a majrity f 2-4 transfer studentathletes were nnqualifiers ut f high schl. Tw-year cllege transfers experience APR prblems and leave cllege ineligible at higher rates than any ther grup f student-athletes. 4

Summary f Key Research Findings n Academic Perfrmance f Tw-Year Cllege Transfers Graduatin rates fr tw-year transfer student-athletes lag behind thse f student-athletes wh enter a Divisin I institutin frm high schl. As GPA increases, ineligibility rates decrease. Increase f GPA is needed t have 2-4 transfer grup whse aggregate academic utcmes at the fur-year institutin are mre in line with native freshmen. Key Research Findings GPA at the tw-year cllege is the best predictr f all first-year utcmes examined. Ineligibility rates decrease significantly as a functin f increased tw-year cllege GPA. Student-athletes with mre cre academic credit perfrm better at fur-year clleges; science is a strng predictr. Key Research Findings (cnt.) Students with high numbers f physical educatin activity credits tend t have less academic success at the fur-year cllege than their tw-year cllege GPA wuld predict. Generally, high schl academic variables d nt add appreciably t predictin nce academic behavir at the tw-year schl is knwn. 5

Deficiency Student-athlete is 0.534 pints deficient f earning the 2.500 transferrable GPA requirement. Student-athlete is three hurs deficient f the three hurs f transferable natural/physical science credit requirement. Questins? Cmmn Issues and Ht Tpics 14

Calculating GPA - Divisins I and II Grades earned in all curses that are nrmally transferable must be cnsidered, even if the institutin limits the number f transferable credits that may be acceptable frm the tw-year institutin, regardless f the grade earned and whether the grade wuld make the curse nntransferable. Last grade earned in repeated curse used fr calculatin. NCAA Bylaw 14.5.4.5.3.2 and 03/04/2011 fficial interpretatin Calculating GPA (cnt.) NCAA GPA standard is nt simply what is displayed n yur institutin's transcript. Physical educatin activity beynd the limit f tw may nt be used in GPA. Nt yur respnsibility t calculate it, but it is imprtant t make the student-athlete aware. Hw can this be explained easily? Calculating GPA (cnt.) Use what curses yu knw wuld r wuld nt transfer t a lcal state schl as an example calculatin. Let the student-athlete knw that he r she shuld be asking the NCAA institutin abut the standard. It is a best practice fr NCAA institutins t prvide an evaluatin prir t enrlling. 15

Transferability f Curses - General Where was the credit earned? Must be earned at tw-year institutin. OR Part-time hurs earned frm fur-year institutin that are placed n tw-year transcript; OR Bylaw 14.5.4.5.2 Transferability f Curses General (cnt.) Where was the credit earned? Hurs earned frm fur-year institutin, cntinued. Any ther fficial dcument (if nt using student transcript) used by the tw-year cllege including the fficial seal f the tw-year cllege; Signed by the apprpriate academic fficial f the tw-year cllege; and Is frwarded directly frm the tw-year cllege t the apprpriate admissins fficial f the certifying institutin. Bylaw 14.5.4.5.2 Transferability f Cre Curses Credits must transfer t the certifying institutin as specific English, math r science credit, regardless f hw the curses are identified n the tw-year cllege's transcript. Nt required t have specific curse "MATH", "ENGL", "PHYS" r "CHEM" designatin t be acceptable transferable credit. 16

Transferability f Cre Curses (cnt.) If the English, math r natural/physical science department determines the credit t fulfill an English, math r natural/physical science requirement in any degree prgram at the institutin, it meets the legislatin. Transferability f Cre Curses (cnt.) Hw can yu help? Have curse descriptins and syllabi available fr the fur-year institutin in the case that the transferability f the curse needs t be discussed. Knw wh is n yur campus and recruiting yur studentathletes. Wrk with fur-year institutins and student-athletes early in the recruiting prcess. Fcus n placing student-athletes in curses that yu are sure will transfer. Use yur pipelines. Divisin I Summer Curses Fr nnqualifiers: N mre than 18/27 transferable hurs earned during ttal summer terms. N mre than 9/13.5 transferable hurs earned during summer immediately prir t transfer. Bylaw 14.5.4.2.3 17

Divisin I Summer Curses (cnt.) Tw-year transfers must be students during the regular academic year. Last minute recveries f credit-hur requirements are limited fr nnqualifiers. Generally, curses frm ther institutins must transfer back t yur institutin in rder t cunt fr NCAA purpses. Divisin I Nntraditinal Curses Hw are nntraditinal curses defined? Distance learning, crrespndence, extensin, internet/virtual curses, independent study, etc. Are nt earned in a face-t-face classrm envirnment with regular interactin between the instructr and the student. Divisin I Nntraditinal Curses (cnt.) Hw d yu determine whether nntraditinal credit at anther institutin is during the regular academic year r a summer curse? Based n the academic calendar f the twyear institutin mst recently attended by the student-athlete. 18

Divisin I Nntraditinal Curses (cnt.) If a student-athlete begins a nntraditinal curse after the tw-year cllege's spring graduatin, it is summer credit, regardless f hw it is classified by the ffering institutin. Divisin I Nntraditinal Curses (cnt.) If a student-athlete begins a nntraditinal curse befre the tw-year cllege's spring graduatin but cmpletes the curse after the graduatin, the curse shall be cnsidered summer credit. Reminder: This curse must be cmpleted prir t the student-athlete triggering transfer status at the fur-year institutin. Divisin I Nntraditinal Curses (cnt.) Thrugh the waiver prcess we have seen a significant amunt f nntraditinal curses taken during the summer. Student-athlete first enrllment in a math curse in the summer prir t transfer. Enrll yur student-athletes early in math, English, reading and science. 19

Academic perfrmance at the certifying institutin. Misadvisement/Lack f Advisement Misadvisement alne is nt sufficient mitigatin t warrant full apprval f a waiver. Staff will take int cnsideratin the student-athletes academic recrd at the certifying institutin and tw-year cllege. The student-athlete s academic recrd must clearly demnstrate that he/she wuld have satisfied all tw-year cllege transfer requirements absent the misadvisement and/r lack f advisement. Tw-Year Cllege Misadvisement/Lack f Advisement Statement frm persn respnsible fr prviding errneus infrmatin. Statement frm the student-athlete. Misadvisement and lack f advisement by tw-year clleges will nly be cnsidered as sufficient mitigatin fr waivers f the graduatin prtin f the tw-year cllege transfer requirements. 21
