Location & Local Information People have been skiing and climbing in Chamonix since the 18th century, and the town is still a must-visit spot for those seeking extreme Alpine challenges. With 15,000 inhabitants, Chamonix is a proper town in its own right, not just a winter resort that's active for a months the start of the next skiing season. Summer is at least as busy as winter with a multitude of air, water and mountain-based activities that offer visitors a completely different type of challenge. Chamonix town has a very cosmopolitan feel thanks to being located close to both the Swiss and Italian borders, as well as its ease of access from Geneva and other international airports. The town is a delight in itself for shopping, sightseeing, cafes bars and restaurants. For the non-skiers there is a sports complex with swimming-pool, sauna, steam room, gym, aerobic classes and an indoor/outdoor ice-rink. Tennis and squash courts can also be rented. For the culturally minded there is an Alpine Museum in town, and usually an interesting exhibition in the space next to St Michel Parking. Local artists also exhibit in their studios, homes or in hotels, which makes for an eye-opening view into the artistic side of town. Majestic Hotel is a popular venue for classical music and if you come to Chamonix in May, it is the venue for the annual Science Festival (so make sure you pack your goggles and test tubes). For those wishing to be pampered, there are several beauty and hair salons in town, offering massages, manicures and a whole range of spa treatments. Page 5
