Earth Science Summer Assignment 7th Grade, 2015-16 Overview This upcoming school year we will be studying a wide range of planetary science topics in astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, climatology and geology. At times we will also raise difficult questions about issues that will affect us in the future or, in some cases, may be changing our world already. That being said, your first assignment for this course is to research an issue related to Earth Science that has opposing views (examples are listed below). You will find that there is information supporting multiple perspectives on the problem. As a citizen scientist choose a position that you agree with and prepare an informative presentation on a topic that you will share with classmates. The assignment is due on the first day of class. Make the most of it - it s a great opportunity to learn about an important issue and to start the school year off with a positive grade. It s also a chance to connect with your peers to discuss ideas that are important to you. Example Topics - YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHOOSE THESE! YOU CAN COME UP WITH YOUR OWN! 1) Global Climate Change: What defines change? How do we know it s happening? What is causing it? What are the solutions? 2) Hydraulic Fracturing (or Fracking ): Is it safe? What are the negative effects, if any? What needs to be done to make it more safe? What are possible alternatives? 3) Deforestation: Is the destruction of forests a necessary and/or worthwhile process? What are the effects of this? Should we manage the use of this natural resource, wood and paper, differently? Are there other options? 4) Off-Shore Oil Drilling: Does it threaten the health of the marine life and, if so, is it worth the risk? What are the possible benefits/consequences? What are alternatives? 5) Space Program: Should we continue to cut funding to government space exploration programs, like NASA, or do we need to invest more money into these programs? Is science more important than funding.ex. art or other fields? 6) LHC (Large Hadron Collider): Should the LHC be used? Is it simply a waste of money? Or, is it an essential tool that furthers scientific exploration? Should we build an even bigger particle accelerator as is planned? Assignment Submission You may choose how to present your findings. For example, you can write an argumentative essay on the topic, you may also create a poster, a screencast (e.g. Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, CamStudio, Copernicus), a video (e.g. imovie), a PowerPoint, a Prezi (www.prezi.com), you can record a song about the issue, and so on - BE CREATIVE!! However you present the information it MUST meet the following criteria: 1) Begin your exploration with a research question, or as it s called in science a problem, that you want to find answers to. SEE BACK
...criteria continued: 2) Give background on your topic. This includes information that you found to support your view and information that could be used to support one other side of the controversial topic (pros and cons) 3) State your position (which perspective you agree with) and why. 4) Discuss possible next steps (alternatives, what we should change, how to convince others of your position - where do we go from here?). 5) Include (and cite) at least four sources that are reputable (such as from a news organization, academic article, university, scientific organization).
