Keynote Address: Clearing Up the Mystery of Observation Steven J. Meyerson, MD Senior Vice President Regulations and Education AccretivePAS Chicago, IL The speaker will discuss the relative costs and benefits for inpatient admission from observation for the patient, physician and hospital. This session will demonstrate the effect of documenting medical necessity for inpatient admission to include Medicare compliance. Examples of key words for physician documentation, clinical factors of InterQual criteria, and RAC review will also be discussed. The speaker will explain options for two-day observation stays, with typical clinical scenarios from discharge to the physician advisor s role. 1. Clear communication between the provider and the health plan is a key component of the process. This session will provide the basic constructs of utilization review, as well as effective best practices for communication. 1. Identify the basic principles of utilization review 2. MI has been found

The speaker will provide an overview of the basic concepts of MI, as well as resources to help case managers learn more about using this tool in their daily practice. 1. This session will identify and discuss the top health care agenda issues and how they affect the daily practice of case managers. The speaker will discuss how case management can form partnerships to help manage proposed health care reforms. 1. Identify and discuss the top issues on the health care reform agenda 2. Examine health care challenges that affect coordination of care across settings 3. The speaker will use film clips to illustrate the various components of trial, including expert witness examination, cross-examination, and closing arguments. Participants will leave with enhanced knowledge about medical malpractice law, as well as practical suggestions for defendants. 1. Review the theoretical basis of tort law 2.
