Campuses Casuarina (Darwin) Casuarina is CDU s main campus; most of CDU s internal students study here. It is home to CDU s library, our major research centres, the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE) and the CDU Art Gallery and Collection. Darwin s main community radio station Territory FM, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Essington International Senior College are also based here. This is our main centre for CDU VET trades courses such as hairdressing, beauty therapy and commercial cooking. The CDU Palmerston campus is within walking distance of the main city centre. It overlooks a man-made lake a haven for birdlife. It has its own library and after-hours learning precinct and includes the Karawa Training Restaurant, a fine dining training restaurant for hospitality students, which offers a la carte dining at bargain prices. A rural campus 16 km north of town provides training and cattle-handling facilities, a library and computer facilities. Teaching and Learning Styles Teaching methods at CDU incorporate lectures and tutorials, seminars, presentations, intensive workshops, fieldwork and laboratory pracs. For university undergraduate degrees, this class time takes up 12 to 17 hours per week, depending on how many units you take. In addition to attending class, students are expected to do independent preparation and study. Research CDU is a research-intensive university and supports the social and economic development of the region through its research expertise in northern Australia and presence in 20 Asian-Pacific countries. Headquartered in Darwin, CDU s research is recognised internationally. The Times Higher Education ranks CDU in the top 100 universities in the world under 50 years old, and the Australian Government ranks CDU at or above world average on 71% of its research disciplines, including Medical and Health, Environmental and Biological sciences. In recent years, CDU has ranked in the top eight in Australia in terms of research intensity measured by the ratio of reported total research income to total expenditure. Through the Menzies School of Health Research (Menzies), CDU is a national and international leader in Indigenous and tropical health research. Menzies research expertise in clinical science, biomedical science, medical microbiology, epidemiology and public health is significantly above world standard and its National Health and Medical Research Council s success rate is double the national average. 4 Charles Darwin University

Scholarships Every semester CDU offers over $400,000 worth of student scholarships. These are open to everyone and you should apply for as many scholarships as you can. You don t have to be top of your class to apply or be successful. University Library CDU s main library building is on Casuarina campus, with branches at Palmerston and Alice Springs. The library holds over 300,000 items in print, electronic, microform, software, CD and AV forms. The e-collection is extensive with access to more than 17,000 online journals. Each course is a unique mix of components and varies not only in terms of subject units, but also how it is taught. CDU offers online, on-campus and mixed-mode study options, which gives you a great deal of choice as to how, when and where you study. Other things to consider are course duration, which semester different subject are taught in and the career paths that different degrees can lead to. What should I study? There are many factors to consider when you are deciding on what to study. Think about what you like to do. Master of Engineering (Chemical) 1CM061 (CS) 1CM561 (ff) CASUARINA internal, external 2 YRS FT; EQUIV PT S1, s2 information Chemical engineers design and operate the processes involved with the transformation of materials. They are involved in key areas such as oil and gas refining, minerals processing, plastics, food processing and pharmaceuticals manufacture. The Chemical Engineering specialisation focuses on hydrocarbon processing, while still providing the general background necessary for graduates to find careers across a range of employers. Emphasis is placed on learning through project work with students being exposed to professional engineering practice through guest lectures by practicing engineers, site visits and work experience. CDU engineering courses were developed in consultation with industry representatives. Students graduate with a sound foundation of engineering learning as well as the advantage of an education that is directly aligned with industry requirements. This professional engineering qualification is accredited under European EUR-ACE requirements and also by Engineers Australia under the Washington Accord. Guide 2016 9

Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) The Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) is specially designed to give students the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for tertiary studies. If you have not studied for a while and feel unsure about whether you can succeed, TEP provides you with the opportunity to achieve academic success. TEP is also designed for students who do not have the usual qualifications for university entrance or have not achieved an adequate Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). TEP teaches learning skills and strategies for managing university life and study. Students who have completed the program say it was very helpful in building their confidence and skills for starting undergraduate study. TEP is free for Australian and New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and Humanitarian Visa holders. TEP can be studied on-campus or in distance education mode. Orientation to Tertiary Study TEP1 Campus CASUARINA INTERNAL, EXTERNAL 1 SEMESTER FT, EQUIV PT S1, S2 Preparation for Tertiary Study TEP2 Campus CASUARINA, ALICE SPRINGS, CDU SYDNEY INTERNAL, EXTERNAL 1 SEMESTER FT, EQUIV PT S1, S2 Successful completion of the Orientation to Tertiary Study (TEP1) course, followed by the Preparation for Tertiary Study (TEP2) course, will allow students to meet the minimum entry requirements for most undergraduate courses at Charles Darwin University. On successful completion of the PTS, students will have gained initial knowledge, abilities and skills in: developing strong identity, confidence and resilience as lifelong learners; and understanding of own learning style and preferences. Students will identify areas of challenge and develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. They will acquire skills in applied numeracy, mathematics and practical science; and develop competence in practical applications of ICT and information literacy. Importantly, students will be encouraged to articulate their own Indigenous perspectives in dynamic relationship to Western academic perspectives. All students will be required to sit an entry-level assessment and interview. The core units and the course specialisations are designed to privilege and advance the exploration and practical application of knowledges from the rich cultural traditions and contemporary social experiences of Indigenous peoples. The course promotes the capacity of culturally capable graduates to provide accountable leadership, advocate for and empower people and communities in their aspirations for effective participation in contemporary Australian social, cultural and economic life.
