5 ECU S PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE PUT ME IN A GOOD POSITION TO WIN A NATIONAL TEACHING AWARD. Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. My passion for working with children was further developed through coaching soccer. I decided to study teaching at ECU based on its excellent reputation. While studying I received valuable feedback from my mentors and supervisors, and always felt supported by my tutors. This was particularly important while juggling study as well as playing for the Perth Glory Women s team in the national W-League. My overall experience studying at ECU was really positive. One of the major benefits that I gained from my course was the time I spent on prac which has put me in a good position for the first two years of my career. I was surprised and very humbled to have recently been awarded a National OfficeMax Exceptional Teacher Award! Shannon May ECU Education graduate 5

13 THE IN-CLASSROOM OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN A GREAT WAY TO ESTABLISH MY OWN TEACHING STYLE. Teaching at ECU has provided me with skills which apply directly to my career. The amount of practical experience builds over the course. I attended a school once a week during my first year, which was a great introduction to the classroom. I then progressed to three week block pracs during my second and third years, which allowed me to see the day-to-day of a classroom. By the fourth year, you re essentially running a classroom on your own. I found that practical experience combined with theoretical content has been the best way for me to develop and learn. 15 STUDYING MY COURSE AT ECU HAS PROVIDED ME WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS I NEED TO SUCCEED. I always enjoyed physical education from a young age and participated in a range of sports. At high school I was given the opportunity to teach primary school students how to play tennis, and in upper school I attended lower school sport carnivals and helped coach the students. My ideal career option was to become a physical education teacher and to teach students how to play sport and to experience the same enjoyment I did. The knowledge and skills I have developed during my course have assisted and provided me with the opportunity to be the most successful teacher I can be. The course content is well designed and contains a balance of both education and sports science units. Bree White ECU Secondary Education graduate 15
