OUR AIM Librios aims to encapsulate the whole publishing process from importing content, updating that content online, through to creating InDesign and EPUB files. At the same time we focus on the ability to create communities built around the content, and finally to sell the content online at both an individual level through to an institutional level. 2

MOBILE READY Librios generated websites are mobile ready, using a responsive design where the display, menus and features will adapt to all screen sizes and cater for both desktop and touch devices. 4
SITE DESIGN AND SWITCHING The platform allows a great deal of control over the design of the site. This is achieved via a simple web-based admin dashboard that requires no developer knowledge. Multiple designs, features and permissions which can vary depending on who you sign in as or what URL you use to access the site. This is ideal for content syndication or branding for different types of content avoiding the cost of technical development. 5

GETTING YOUR CONTENT INTO LIBRIOS Word files can be imported where the styles used are detected and converted to XML. Any images are imported all in one go into the system. Custom import filters can be configured to recognise certain tagging within the file and apply the correct styling on import based on that. An entire epub can also be uploaded and become web-browsable and editable. The images are added into a central media library and publications such as InDesign files can be created. The platform also supports Excel spreadsheet uploads where appropriate for the content. 7
NAVIGATING ONLINE Once the publication has been imported and is on the system, it can be viewed and edited directly via a web browser. The system search allows a user to refine their search by keywords or via other metadata. Users can see a preview at Publication / Chapter level including paywall preview for paid-to-access content. 8
EDITING ONLINE The system loads the content into an XML schema based rich-text editor where changes the content can be made all on the web. As the platform is an XML based system it allows for work to be undertaken with style tags turned on if required, but can also use like normal word processing software. An editor can add and delete text, change the formatting and paragraph style being used or add links and images. In the background, the platform is applying the relevant XML tagging to the content. The styling tags available in the rich-text editor can be adapted based on the type of content you choose to import. For example, if the content being edited was a recipe book, the platform could create bespoke tagging for lists of ingredients or the cooking method. Extra metadata can also be added, like subject keywords or more information to help this content become more discoverable and searchable. 9
EDITORIAL FEATURES When the required updating of a publications has been completed there are options to assign other editors to work on this content as well. Assigned publications will then appear in the editors personal dashboard and messages can be sent via the messaging tool. During this process the content can be pushed through a configurable editorial workflow, and the platform has release workflow features built in. 10
PRODUCTION From within the platform production files for a publication can be produced directly on the site. An EPUB can be created where additional metadata can be incorporated automatically. Different designs elements can also be selected, for example the cover image or CSS styling. An InDesign file of a publication can also be produced at this point. InDesign templates which contain book layout information can be uploaded to the site and then used for output. The platform will automatically apply paragraph and character styles, place images and apply object styles to them. The system can also place multi-page PDF files into the InDesign document. Support is also available for other features such as tables, footnotes, index creation and cross-references. The system also has the ability to create ATOM or RSS feeds which can be very useful for app developers and third parties. For example a feed can be set up to integrate directly with a WordPress site. 11

METADATA & FOOTNOTES When users view a publication any metadata added is visible with information such as ISBN numbers, copyright messages as well as system generated metadata including the number of images and the word count. A publication can be navigated via a carousel of the images found within it which have been referenced from the image library. Footnotes have been created during the content import process and can now be viewed by the end user by simply hovering with a mouse over or via touch on a tablet where they are displayed via pop-up boxes in the content. 13
ONLINE INDEX Index terms can be read into the platform via tags from a Word file. Alternatively a spreadsheet of terms could be run against the content, so creating an Index which can be used online. Indexes can be included within EPUBs and InDesign (where page numbers are generated automatically). The Index can be used online and provides an alternative method for navigating the content. Once the Index is activated, Index markers appear in the content itself. These can be clicked and the user will be taken to the relevant place in the index and can see other entries that may be of interest. The Index provides a very useful online method for linking terms together while allowing people to jump around the content without knowing what terms to search on and see themes naturally linked together across the publication. 14
CREATING NOTES By selecting a piece of content in a publication a user can create their own personal notes. By highlighting the text, a pop-up appears where they can click on Bookmark & Notes and add their own notes to the content. This could be a useful editorial tool or used for supplying additional functionality within a subscription based system for users who may want to create notes based on the content they re reading. Notes can be colour coded and they then appear in the easily accessible My notes pop-out. Within a user s profile they can see all the notes they ve added across different parts of the content and they can export these out of the system for future reference. 15
IMAGE FEATURES When viewing an image you can click on the magnify icon. This allows the image to be opened in a window where a zoom function is available directly on the site. A user can access additional metadata for the image by clicking on an information button and subsequently clicking through to see further information in the image bank. When a 3D icon is visible, access to a 3D image is available where the user can navigate, rotate and click on associated notes. The platform also reports on all the different publications an image has been used 16
CITATIONS, WATCH AND MY LIBRARY Citations can be created either by clicking on an icon at the top of the content, or by highlighting a selection of content and choosing a citation type. These citations can be viewed, re-organised and exported out of the platform for later reference. Citation formats include Chicago and MLA. The user also has the ability to watch content where if an editorial workflow change is made the user will be alerted via email to let them know it has been updated with a link to view the updated version online. The site also allows users to add publications and chapters that they are interested in to their personal library bookshelf. 17
SEARCHING When searching for content on the Librios platform a variety of tools are available to help with this process. The user can search for terms within different fields and once they have run the search the system presents the results including number of hits and facets. Facets are categories that have been found within the search results you can select a facet to further refine your search. Additional features such as sorting and saving of searches are also available. 18
CENTRAL MEDIA LIBRARY When importing content with images the images can be stored in a central library automatically. As we saw previously sophisticated searches can be created based on image metadata. Images can also be uploaded via import procedures by uploading either individual images or using the bulk upload facility. ZIP files can also be uploaded and are extracted and added to the library automatically. A bulk update of the metadata associated with images can be achieved via spreadsheet. All the common bitmap image types are supported including JPEGs, PNG and TIFF. SVGs, EPS and PDF can also be uploaded. If for example a TIFF file is uploaded it is used for InDesign output, but automatically converted and resampled for Web or EPUB output. The library also has support for video and sound files. 19

SELLING ACCESS TO YOUR CONTENT Once content has been imported into the platform that are a range of features for monetising it. Direct access to a whole publication or single chapter can be sold on the site. Subscriptions can be created and sold to cover a series, author, collection or topic. These can also be configured to allow subscription access for a limited period of time allowing additional flexibility. Institutional access can be configured to allow access to content via a range of authentication methods including IP, URL referrer and single sign-on (Shibboleth). 21
COURSEPACKS By moving around the site to different publications various pieces of content can be selected and the creation of a Coursepack can begin. A course-pack brings together pieces of content to create a new product. Once all of the Coursepack elements have been set up it can be published onto the site and made available for sale. A coursepack that has been bought by a user can be accessed either via an online reader including (including the note taking, searching etc.), or can be downloaded as an EPUB file which is automatically socially DRM d based on their payment details and can then read offline as required. Royalty payments can be calculated automatically based on what content has been sold across the different publications used. 22
DOCUMENT MAKER The system also allows you to select content from around the site and make it into a production file by using the document maker. Once content has been selected the document maker there are options to output epub, InDesign or Word document. It is a very quick way to try out new concepts for titles or creating new titles based on existing content. Personal user content uploaded into the users profile could even be included here allowing for even more bespoke content creation. 23

BESPOKE CONTENT TYPES Another part of the system deals with bespoke content types. For example this could include recipes from cook books, coins in a collectors book, artefacts in a museum collection or places in a travel guide. The following example demonstrates how the platform handles bespoke content types for places to stay, eat at, or visit. 25
PLACES Within the platform a publication can be created which includes places to visit. Listings in the system can be setup to automatically populate this section of the publication. Clicking through to an attraction, the system can show where this place content is being used in various publications. The system has taken the metadata entered, for example the address, and created a geo-location and automatically created a map. As the location is now known other places that are nearby can be displayed. As this is a separate piece of content in the system it allows for an email to be sent out, and an individual to sign into the site as the attraction itself and update their own information - for example their telephone number, images or description etc. This then allows a community to be built up around the content. 26
CREATION OF EPUB If a publication which contains place listings is exported to an EPUB these listings are exported in situ in the content, but are also accessible as individual pieces of content within the EPUB. This allows for features such as What s nearby as the system knows the place location and all those close by. The EPUB can include a link from the place back to its online web version so allowing access to all of the community features of the site. 27

COMMUNITY FEATURES This ability to build community around the content can be taken further. Features such as posting status updates and content creation can be performed by the individual logged in as the place itself. For example, users can create events, news, blogs and images which are added into their showcases. Threaded discussions and commenting can be added as well as features such as liking and sharing to external social networks. The platform allows users and places to make friends and connect or follow one another. They can also send direct messages to one another. An overview of the profile interaction with other users is shown on the profile homepage and an activity feed allows users to see what their connections and following users have been doing on the site. 29

PRE-CONFIGURED CONTENT TYPES Within the platform there are many content types which have already been preconfigured and integrated with creation, searching and re-purposing. Blogs, news and discussions can all be created, commented upon and shared to social networking sites. Jobs can be created and the user can add them to their favourites baskets or apply for them directly on the site. Groups can be created in which users can request to join and create content directly of interest for the group. The platform also has moderation methods ensuring content created by a user can be checked prior to public viewing if required. 31
EVENT MANAGEMENT Events can be created and searched on via a variety of metadata including date range. A calendar view allows for easy navigation. Event metadata also allows for additional information such as location and multiple date ranges and times. Attendance can be purchased by the user or on behalf of other colleagues in the same company. If different types of tickets are needed, these can be created, sold and managed via the site. User can export attendee lists including information such as address, email or even dietary requirements stored in the attendee user profile. Invitations to an event can be sent to other users via their connections. The system also auto archives events as they pass their active dates. 32

LEARNING The platform also allows for questions to be defined and scored directly within the content. For example if a chapter in a publication was about a certain technique in needlework, questions could be asked at any suitable point and the user could see how well they ve understood and answered the questions. Scores can be incorporated with CPD points and displayed on leader boards. 34

PAYMENT, PROVIDERS & REPORTING The platform can be configured against a payment provider such as PayPal, but also can provide the facility for offline purchasing where invoices are created and can be managed via the payment section in the admin area. In the Admin area payment pages, an admin user can update account (or offline) payments and can create reports to track invoices by user, status and over a chosen period then export them in a spreadsheet format. The system discount codes and tax rates can also be defined. The platform emails a confirmation invoice to the recipient. This information is also stored and accessible via the My payments area of a user profile. 36

THE ADMIN AREA The site Admin area, where access is limited via user role permissions, allows administration over user profiles, all content types, newsletters, payments, site reporting, web analytics and site design and setup. All of the activity on the system is recorded so allowing the creation of analytics and reports. Reports can include data on the most popular publications, most popular pieces of content, user activity and who is using the site the most. In addition the system integrates with Google analytics allowing admins to view a portion of it s reports without having to go directly to the Google Analytics website. With the site s ability to integrate with e-commerce there are facilities to report on payment, cancelling invoices and creating report on royalty payments. 38
