Chapter 1. IBM UnicaeMessage overview You can use IBM Unica emessage to conduct targeted, measurable and SMS marketing campaigns to deliver marketing messages that are tailored to each recipient. Because emessage installs and operates with IBM UnicaCampaign, you can use information that is stored in your corporate marketing databases to customize each message. emessage integrates with secure composition, transmission, and tracking resources that are hosted by IBM. The hosted environment is maintained continually and updated regularly to provide you with the latest mailing features. To access these resources, you must activate a hosted account with IBM. For more information about establishing a hosted account and connecting to hosted resources, see the IBM UnicaeMessage Startup and Administration Guide. Before you begin, become familiar with the mailing features that emessage provides to create, send, and track personalized , hosted landing pages, and SMS messages. Recipient list overview on page 13 overview on page 33 Chapter 6, Personalized landing pages, on page 117 emessage reports on page 337 Components and workflow in emessage Conducting a messaging campaign with emessage requires components that are installed locally with IBM Unica Campaign and components that are hosted by IBM. The workflow for message design, transmission, and response tracking crosses between the two environments. The following diagram identifies the major emessage components and illustrates the overall workflow. Copyright IBM Corp. 1999,

Table 1. emessage Overview Description Select data about message recipients. Use data from your marketing databases or transactional data to address and personalize each message. Upload the selected recipient data. emessage maintains a secure connection with the hosted messaging environment. Create a communication. The communication defines the appearance and behavior of the message that the recipient opens. Configure a messaging campaign. Depending on the type of campaign, you configure how to combine recipient-specific data with text, images, hyperlinks, and placeholders for recipient data to enable the system to individually personalize each message. Run the campaign. The system merges recipient data with the document that defines the message. The system transmits the individual messages and records aggregate transmission performance. 2 IBM Unica emessage: User's Guide

Table 1. emessage Overview (continued) Description Messages are delivered to the specified recipients. emessage tracks message delivery responses from various Internet Service Providers (ISP). The system records various ISP delivery responses, including failed delivery responses, and unsubscribe requests. Recipients respond to your message. The system detects and records message opens and link clicks. Recipients can click links in the message that point to your website or to web pages that IBM hosts for you. emessage tracks message responses. IBM systems process each link click and records data about the response before the system redirects the link request to the link target. Download the contact and response data. The Response and Contact Tracker (RCT) is installed with Campaign behind your corporate firewall. The RCT periodically requests the tracking data that IBM recorded. Contact and response data is stored in the emessage system tables. The RCT stores the data that it receives in various system tables. The emessage system tables are part of the Campaign database schema. Standard reports. View standard emessage reports to analyze message transmission performance, delivery success, and recipient responses. Your hosted messaging account on page 12 emessage concepts Several basic concepts are important to understanding how to use IBM Unica emessage to create and manage messaging campaigns. Recipient lists In emessage, a recipient list provides a connection to selected recipient-specific data in your marketing databases that emessage uses to address and personalize outbound marketing messages. The data is contained in a database table that is called an Output List Table (OLT). You define and populate an OLT in IBM Unica Campaign to select individuals that receive a personalized message and to provide personal information about each message recipient. Note: An OLT is not required for transactional messages or location-triggered mobile push notifications. You create a recipient list by running a Campaign flowchart that contains an emessage process. The OLT is the output of the emessage process. When you configure the OLT, you define personalization fields that you can add to messages. Chapter 1. IBM UnicaeMessage overview 3

Each personalization field maps to a field in your marketing database. For example, you can define a personalization field that maps to the first name or account number that you have on file for each message recipient. When you transmit messages as part of a messaging campaign, emessage replaces every personalization field in each message with data that is specific to the individual message recipient. Personalization Personalization features in emessage provide various ways for you to tailor each message to address the individual preferences or characteristics of the message recipient. The information that is required to personalize a message comes from records that are stored in your marketing database and uploaded to the IBM hosted messaging environment. Personalization features in emessage depend on personalization fields. Each field references a specific field in your marketing database. Personalization fields provide the means to automatically add recipient-specific information from your marketing database to the messages that you send. Personalization fields are also used in advanced scripts for messaging and in rules that control how conditionalized content displays. Communications A communication is an object that you use in the Document Composer to define the structure and content of personalized messages and landing pages. To create a message or landing page, you must create a new communication or edit an existing communication. The design of the communication determines the appearance and behavior of the message that is delivered to each recipient. A published communication is a required input to every messaging run. Templates Some types of communications are based on an HTML template that you create outside of the Document Composer. The template defines the layout of the message or landing page that is based on the communication. In the Document Composer, you can add content and personalizations to create a communication. You can also embed various content and personalization elements, including personalization fields, directly into the body of the template. Templates are stored in the Content Library that is part of the Document Composer. The marketer must upload the template to the Content Library where it can be used to create a message or landing page communication. The Document Composer provides an editor that marketers can use to modify templates as needed. In some cases, templates can be created by third-party vendors that provide the template to the marketer. Landing pages A landing page is a web page that is served from the IBM hosted messaging environment. Links in personalized messages can point to the hosted landing page. If the landing page includes personalization elements that are defined in the message, IBM renders the page differently to each message recipient that goes to the page. 4 IBM Unica emessage: User's Guide

You design and maintain landing pages in the Document Composer. You can also design a landing page to serve as an online form to gather information or process requests from message recipients. If you create a version of an message that can be displayed as a web page, emessage creates a landing page that duplicates the message. Mailings An emessage mailing creates the framework for organizing and running an marketing campaign. You create and configure emessage mailings in IBM Unica Campaign. Each mailing represents a separate messaging campaign. When you enable IBM Unica emessage, the Campaign interface adds a link that you can use add a mailing to a campaign. Each mailing that you add to a campaign appears as a separate tab in the campaign summary. Each standard mailing must reference an Output List Table (OLT) that provides a list of recipients and an communication that defines the appearance and behavior of the message. You send personalized by conducting a mailing run. During the mailing run, emessage creates individual messages by merging personalization data from the OLT into individual messages that are based on the communication. Transactional messages and location triggered push notifications do not rely on an OLT for address data or other personal data. The transactional request or location trigger provide the required information. Transactional A transactional message is a single message that is sent in response to a specific, predetermined transaction that is detected in your business systems. IBM provides the emessage Transactional Mailing Service (TMS) as a hosted web service to process transactional messages. marketers work with application developers to integrate corporate transaction management systems with the emessage TMS. By sending a transactional message, you can respond automatically to specific customer or customer-related activities with a personalized message. You can use any event that you can detect in your business systems to prompt a transactional . Advanced scripts for personalized messaging Advanced scripting for personalized messaging is template-based scripting language for creating self-contained scripts that you can insert into templates for HTML or text-only . It offers a way to create types of personalized content that you cannot easily duplicate in the Document Composer. The script syntax includes several tags and elements that are used exclusively by emessage. You can use advanced scripting to design a script that displays a list of recipient-specific information in a data table. You can also create an advanced script that defines multiple levels of conditional content in a single message. This type of conditional content hierarchy is also referred to as nested conditional content. Chapter 1. IBM UnicaeMessage overview 5

You can add advanced scripts directly into a message template or HTML snippet that you add to a message. In a script, you can reference personalization fields that are defined in an output list table (OLT). You can also include content reference labels that are defined in the Content Library. Getting started with IBM emessage emessage is tightly integrated with IBM Unica Campaign. To access emessage features, you must log into Campaign through a supported web browser. You can configure the system to display emessage and Campaign in one of several languages other than English. For more information about requirements for working with IBM Unica Campaign, see the IBM Unica Campaign User's Guide and other Campaign documentation. Browser requirements To access IBM UnicaeMessage, confirm that you are using a compatible version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. 15 Access control through user roles and permissions Access to emessage and Campaign mailing features and content depends on roles and permissions that are defined for the system user that you use to log in to the system. The combination of permissions that are associated with the emessage and Campaign roles determines what you can view and the actions that you can perform. For best results when you use emessage and Campaign, you must understand the access requirements for each task that you need to perform. Ensure that the system user that you specify when you log in to the system has the system and content access permissions that you require. System administrators responsible for configuring the IBM Unica Marketing system determine the roles that are assigned to each system user and the permissions that are assigned to each role. If you need to access objects or perform tasks that your permissions do not allow, contact your system administrator. For more information about how user roles and permissions control access to features and content, see the IBM Unica Marketing emessage Startup and Administrator's Guide. Working with search on page 223 Folder permissions on page 218 domains available for use in branded URLs on page 253 Related tasks: Adding folders on the Communications tab on page 219 Adding folders in the Content Library on page 218 Deleting communications, content, and searches on page 220 To log in to IBM Unica Marketing Before you begin Before you begin working with IBM Unica Marketing, you need the following. v An intranet (network) connection to access your IBM Unica Marketing server. v Microsoft Internet Explorer installed on your computer. v User name and password to sign in to IBM Unica Marketing. v The URL to access IBM Unica Marketing on your network. For information or questions about your hosted messaging account, contact the IBM Account Services team at eacctsvc@us.ibm.com. For more information about how to connect to the hosted messaging systems, see the IBM UnicaeMessage Startup and Administrator's Guide. Components and workflow in emessage on page 1 Recipient list overview on page 13 overview on page 33 Expired link forwarding on page 249 Related tasks: Establishing a short link domain with IBM on page 265 Adding a Forward to a Friend link to messages on page IBM Unica emessage: User's Guide

Chapter 2. Recipient lists for personalized messaging If you install and enable IBM Unica emessage within Campaign, then you can create a list that defines the recipients for a personalized messaging campaign. The list contains the recipient information that is used to address and personalize each message. You create a recipient list by configuring an emessage process in a Campaign flowchart. Note: In emessage, a recipient list is not required for mailings that are enabled for transactional or for location triggered mobile app push notifications. Creating a recipient list happens in three phases. 1. Select recipients. Configure a Campaign flowchart that selects the individuals who you want to contact through the messaging campaign. Various flowchart cells provide the input to the emessage process. 2. Define the recipient list as an Output List Table (OLT). The OLT is the output of the emessage process in a Campaign flowchart. Configure the OLT to map personalization fields to fields in your marketing database that can provide personal information about each recipient. At this point, the OLT is only a table definition and it contains no recipient data. 3. Create the list. Run the flowchart that contains the emessage process. Running the flowchart creates the OLT in the emessage system tables and enters values into the appropriate OLT columns. The emessage system tables are part of the Campaign schema. emessage process in Campaign flowcharts on page 10 Recipient list overview Recipient lists and transactional on page 26 Related tasks: To define the output list table on page 20 Recipient list overview You create a recipient list by configuring an emessage process and completing a production run of the flowchart that contains it. When the flowchart run completes, the system automatically uploads the list to the hosted messaging environment. Reference the list in a mailing configuration to make recipient data available for use in messages. Creating a recipient list that you can reference in a mailing is a multi-step process that involves the following activities. v v Identify the database tables and fields in your corporate data mart that contain data that you can use to personalize messages. Define flowchart cells in Campaign to select the intended recipients of a messaging campaign. The flowchart must contain an emessage process. Copyright IBM Corp. 1999,
