Downloading Library ebooks to an ereader The Santa Clarita Library offers a large collection of downloadable electronic books that are compatible with your ereader. ebooks are hosted on Overdrive and Freading. Follow the steps below to download a title to your device. You will need to use a computer to checkout and transfer the book to your device. Using your computer s web browser, go to the Santa Clarita Library web site, click on elibrary and select ebooks, then select Overdrive or Freading. Overdrive In order to put books on your ereader you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions. You will find a link on OverDrive under Help. Then select Adobe Digital Editions.
Download and install the software. After you have installed Adobe Digital Editions, you need to take steps to activate the software before downloading digital materials. To activate Adobe Digital Editions open Adobe Digital Editions, the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed Click Continue. The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed. In the appropriate fields, enter an email address and password for your Adobe ID. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click Get an Adobe ID online and follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID Click Activate. Your computer is activated to your Adobe ID. Click Finish to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box. You are now ready to search for ebooks. Begin by signing into your account. Click the Sign In link in the upper right of page. Now enter your library card barcode number and PIN (your PIN defaults to the last 4 numbers of your phone number) and click Sign In. If you don t remember your PIN, please call the library. Now that you are logged in, the next step is to browse the collection of ebooks. You can perform a quick search by typing in the search bok or an Advanced Search, limiting author, title, format and more by selecting the link below the box. Also you can browse the menu which is broken into subcategories or scoll down the page to see newest releases and most popular titles.
When you search a list of titles will be displayed. If you click on the book cover you can view more information about the book and your option to check it out, place on a wish list or place a request. You can filter your search using the options on the left menu bar. To quickly see if a title is available check to see in the icon in the upper right corner is black or grey. Black is available, grey is currently checked out. You can also click the ribbon at the bottom of the cover image to quickly add a title to your wish list. If the ribbon is red it is currently on your wish list. If the book is available you will see a blue button to Borrow. If the book is checked out the blue button will say Place A Hold. Selecting the ribbon icon will add it to your wish list. You will then be given the option to Download or Read in your browser.
Once you select Download the file will begin to download and either give you an option to open it or Adobe Digital Editions will open when the download is complete. You will see the cover of the book you have downloaded. Next select Library. This will take you to a screen allowing you to transfer the title to your device. You will now see your downloaded books and device. your
Click on the book cover for the title you want to transfer. You will click on it and drag it to your device. When you see a green +let go of the mouse to drop the book into your reader. The book will now be on your device. Freading If you have not previously installed Adobe Digital Editions you will first need to install this software. Instructions can be found above in the Overdrive section. Once Adobe Digital Editions is installed you can login to your account which requires your library card number and PIN.
How Freading works: Upon logging in you will see a splash page come up, with an easy 1-2-3 guide to enjoying ebooks. In the upper right corner of the site, you will see information regarding your account. Specifically, you will see an allotment of "tokens", which is a virtual currency that you can redeem for ebook downloads. It will say 2/2, or some other configuration, which means you have 2 tokens for this week, and you have 2 tokens remaining. Different books cost different token amounts. The token amount required for a book is labeled clearly on the book display. Unused tokens roll over to the following week. Every 4 weeks, unused tokens expire. Computer & ereader users "open" rather than "save" the file when downloading ebooks. Opening will automatically save ebook in your Adobe library. To transfer the file, plug in your ereader. The ereader will show up in your Adobe software, then you drag the downloaded ebook onto the name of the ereader. Apple App users will use your device's Safari browser to download the ebook into the app, rather than from within the app. Android App users can download from with the app Kindle Fire (with a few extra steps) Nook Devices Sony Reader Kobo Reader E-reader via Transfer
