MS SQL Server 2008 Express Installation Instructions (09/27/09) Note This process will install software necessary for the class. It can take 90 120 minutes or more and will require restarting your computer several times. My install took 90 minutes. Get Microsoft Web Platform Installer Go to http://www.microsoft.com/web in your browser. Click on Downloads button in the menu bar. Read over any of the information that you like and then click on the Download It Now button on the right-side above. You can Run the launcher from here, but choosing Save will allow you to keep it and run it to add tools later no requirement to do that in this class. The saved file wpilauncher can be stored on the Desktop or wherever you prefer. Whether you choose Run or launch the saved application, you may get prompted (on Vista) for permission to run the application. Accept any that appear. The Web Platform Installer window will appear. It looks like this. Selecting the Software Using the Installer above, click on the Customize link at the bottom of the Database box. The following window will appear. Make the two selections above (items 2 and 3) and click on the Install button. 2009 Bob Larson (ischool University of Washington) Page 3of 7
The following window will appear showing what will be installed and asking you to agree to any licensing terms. Click on the I Accept button. The following window will appear. We can use either Authentication Mode, but if you choose Mixed Mode shown above and enter your regular PC password, you increase the chances of regaining control of SQL Server if things go wrong. The following progress window will appear. It is time to be patient, the software Downloads (top bar) go quite quickly just a few minutes depending on your Internet connection. The Install (lower bar) will not go so quickly. Note your number of items to install may vary depending on what has already been added to your computer. Do not get concerned that the Install progress bar doesn t seem to do anything you d think it could dance or something. Periodically, the computer will need to Restart to complete the installation of one of the applications. Some of the applications can take 15-25 minutes to install. The.NET Framework and SQL Server particulalry seem to take forever. Click Yes, login again when prompted and wait for the Launcher to continue Vista users may have to allow the Launcher to run each time. The following screen shows the successfully installed applications. Click on the Finish button. The next screen would allow you to choose other Windows based applications that can be installed. Look over anything that you like and then click on the Exit button. While there are many useful applications that the launcher can install, this class does not require them and I can t assure you that they might conflict with other functions on your computer (including the security features). 2009 Bob Larson (ischool University of Washington) Page 6of 7
To test the installation The Modue 4 lecture Getting Started With MS SQL Server covers getting started or use the Start Programs Microfoft SQL Server 2008 SQL Server Management Studio to launch the programs. Click on the Connect button to launch SQL Server and the Management Studio. Exit after confirming it runs. You will use this in Module 4.
