3 Introduction MessageGuard is an add-on subscription service that allows customers to send secure, encrypted messages via Outlook or Outlook Express, while not requiring recipients to install any new software, exchange keys, or know the senders password. MessageGuard utilizes industry standard AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption to secure messages, but unlike other solutions utilizes a new user friendly encryption technology called IBE (Identity Based Encryption), to protect the keys. To find out additional information about MessageGuard or subscribe to the service please visit: Installing the MessageGuard Desktop Client The MessageGuard Desktop Client (also referred to as the Plug-in ) works with Microsoft Outlook (2000, 2002(XP) and 2003) and Outlook Express 6.0. Please follow these instructions to install and configure the Desktop Client software to make it work with your MessageGuard subscription. Step 1 Download the MessageGuard client from the Network Solutions Web site ( save it to your computer, and then select Run to start the installation program (Secur .msi). 4 Step 2 You will then see a Welcome screen explaining what will happen next. Select Next to continue. Step 3 You will then be presented a End-User Use Agreement screen, which you must agree to, to be able to continue with the installation of the software. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 4 of 17

5 Step 4 You will then be presented with a Setup Type screen to allow you to select the type of installation you would like to perform. Most users choose Typical. Selecting Custom will allow you deselect File Security, Outlook, and/or Outlook Express if you do not want those software features installed on your computer. Only advanced users should select Custom. Step 5 After selecting the type of installation you want, you will be prompted to initiate the install. Please select Install to continue. 6 Step 5a - If you have any applications open that conflict with the installation program, you will recieve a warning. By selecting Ok the installation program will automatically close them. Selecting Cancel will end the installation program. * Please save your work before proceeding. Step 6 You will then see an Installation screen showing you the progress of the MessageGuard Desktop Client software installation. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 6 of 17

7 Step 7 After MessageGuard has successfully installed, you will be presented with the following screen. Upon selecting Finish the installation program will exit. Step 8 The MessageGuard Desktop Client software is now installed on your computer. The following items will appear on your computer desktop and within Outlook confirming the succesful installation. However, you will not be able to use your MessageGuard subscription until you enroll your Identity (method MessageGuard uses to assign you keys) with the Network Solutions central key servers. Please proceed to Step 9 to initiate the final step in setting up your MessageGuard subscription, by enrolling your Identity. 8 Outlook Toolbar Item: New Message Send Secure Button: Step 9 From Outlook or Outlook Express and from the account ( address) you have an active MessageGuard subscription, create a new message and send it securely by selecting the Send Secure button instead of the Send button. The first time you select this button your computer will search for an identity and active signing key. This will take up to 30 seconds. It will then prompt you with the following dialog boxes. Select Yes to continue to the enrollment screens on Network Solutions central key servers. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 8 of 17

9 Step 10 You will then be asked to create a New Account in order to establish an Identity for their address on the Network Solutions key servers. You will only be asked to provide your name, a password you would like to use, and to agree to the Service Agreement. Your address (Identity) will already be populated on the screen and can not be changed. This is a one time process. Step 11 After agreeing to the Service Agreement and selecting Next you will be asked to check your account for an Account Creation message. This final verification step is similar to the identity verification process used by credit card compannies, banks, utilities, etc. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 9 of 17

10 Step 12 Upon receiving the message you will need to select a link in the message by clicking on it to complete the process. This link is only valid one time and it is suggested that you delete the message after completing the enrollment. Step 13 Upon selecting the link your enrollment will be completed and you will be presented with a confirmation screen. The MessageGuard system will then proceed to the orginal action (sending) that you intiated. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 10 of 17

11 Sending Secure Messages with the Desktop Client Step 1 Open Outlook or Outlook Express after the MessageGuard Desktop Client has succesfully been installed. Select New to create a new message. * You will notice the Send Secure button has been added to your toolbar. Step 2 Upon completing your message, select the Send Secure button to send your message securely to its recipient(s). You will then be notified that MessageGuard is encrypting your message and it will be sent. That s it, you have sent a secure MessageGuard message. * If you have installed the Desktop Client software, but have not completed the enrollment, you will not be able to proceed until you have done so. 12 Reading Secure Messages with the Desktop Client Step 1 Upon receiving a secure MessageGuard message, your inbox will have no visual indication that the message is encrypted. Upon highlighting the message the MessageGuard Icon in your Outlook Toolbar will light up and upon opening the message you will see a footer appended to the bottom of the message saying, Note: This was sent securely using MessageGuard powered by Network Solutions. That s it. You have received and read a secure MessageGuard message. You may now delete, reply, or forward the message like you would with any other message you have received. Outlook Toolbar Item: * If you have installed the Desktop Client software, but have not completed the enrollment, you will not be able to proceed until you have done so. ** Please also note MessageGuard messages remain encrypted even after being read. Hint - While reading a secure MessageGuard message, selecting the MessageGuard icon on the Outlook toolbar will validate the authenticity of the sender through digital signature checks. 13 Reading Secure Messages for Non-Subscribers There are no special requirements or software to install for the recipients of your secure messages, encrypted by MessageGuard, other than having the ability to read HTML messages and having web access. Step 1 The recipient will receive your with your original subject line and your encrypted message as an attachment. Step 2 Upon opening the message, the recipient sees the following HTML message indicating that they have a secure , which they can read by opening the attachment. 14 Step 3 The attachment will begin to open and prompt them to select the Read Message button. * Clicking on the Read Message button may trigger warnings from the user s service provider that information is being sent to someone else. This is normal, the encrypted message is being sent to Network Solutions servers to be decrypted in the background. ** If they have not completed an Identity enrollment, they will not be able to proceed until they have done so. Step 4 They will then be prompted for their password. Selecting Continue will take them to your message. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 14 of 17

15 Step 5 Successfully completing the previouse step will give them access to the encrypted message in a secure browser session (it does not decrypt the in their inbox). They then have the option of deleting the message, replying to the message securely, replying to all securely, or simply retaining the message so they can view it again in the future. Only MessageGuard subscribers with the Desktop Client software installed can forward or add attachments to secure messages. (v ) MessageGuard User Guide Page 15 of 17

16 MessageGuard Identity Enrollment Step 1 The first time a recipient attempts to read a secure MessageGuard message or a subscriber attempts to send a secure MessageGuard message, they will be asked to create a New Account in order to establish an Identity for their address on the Network Solutions key servers. They are only asked to provide their name, a password they would like to use, and to agree to the Service Agreement. Their address (Identity) will already be populated on the screen and can not be changed. This is a one time process. Step 2 After agreeing to the Service Agreement and selecting Next they are asked to check their account for an Account Creation message. This link is only valid one time and it is suggested that the recipient delete the message after completing the enrollment. Step 4 Upon selecting the link the enrollment is complete and they will be presented with a confirmation screen.
