Phonics the Building Blocks for Reading and Writing Horsey Jill Leighton Captain Jack
American reading research points out that in addition to teaching phonics we should also teach phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. The 5 Building Blocks for reading success 1. Phonemic awareness 2. Phonics 3. Fluency 4. Vocabulary 5. Comprehension ( the goal of reading) NB: These blocks are interrelated. If a children uses phonics to blend j-a-m and says jam but does not understand the word jam this is not really reading.
Learning Stars 1&2 Our phonics approach is taken from the new Pre-primary course Learning Stars 1 &2 which I co-authored with Jeanne Perrett. The phonics lessons and activities develop phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and ensure comprehension from the beginning.
