Ensure the learners understand what camping means. According to pg. 37 of the CAPS for Grade R English Home Language Listening and Speaking, the learners should listen to a story and sequence the pictures of the story. The educator can first have a class discussion with the learners about whether they have ever been camping. If they have never been camping the educator can explain what camping is and show the learners some pictures of people camping. The educator will read the learners the story about the family camping trip. The educator can ask the learners questions about the story to check the learner s understanding: - Where will the family sleep when they are camping? They will sleep in sleeping bags inside the tent. - What did the family collect to make a fire? They collected wood to make the fire. - What treat did they toast on the fire? They toasted marshmallows on the fire. The learners will number the pictures in the correct order according to the story. The learners can draw a picture to show their understanding of camping. Suggested answers Picture 1: Picture of a family arriving at a campsite. Picture 2: Picture of a little girl helping her dad put up tents. Picture 3: Picture of two little boys helping his dad collect wood. Picture 4: Picture of a family toasting marshmallows around a fire.

4 Listening and Speaking Activity: A family picnic Listening and Speaking: Ensure you have enough copies of the worksheet: A family picnic. According to pg. 37 of the CAPS for Grade R English Home Language Listening and Speaking, the learners should listen to a story and sequence the pictures of the story. The educator can first have a class discussion with the learners about whether they have ever been on a picnic. If they have never been camping, the educator can explain what a picnic is and show the learners some pictures of people having a picnic. The educator will read the learners the story about the family picnic. The educator can ask the learners questions about the story to check the learner s understanding: - What was the weather like? The weather was sunny. - Where did the family go for their picnic? They went to the park for their picnic. - What did they eat? They ate sandwiches. - What did the sister do with her bread? She fed the ducks. - What sport did the little boy and his dad play? They played soccer. - What activity did the little boy and his sister do with their dad? They flew their kites in the air. The learners can draw a picture to show their understanding of the picnic. The learners will draw a line from the numbers 1,2,3,4 to the correct picture to put the pictures into the correct order of the story. Suggested answers 1 Is the picture of the family eating sandwiches. 2 Is the picture of the little girl feeding bread to the ducks. 3 Is the picture of the little boy playing soccer with his father. 4 Is the picture of the little boy and girl flying a kite with their dad.

5 Reading and Phonics: Shared Reading Emergent Reading Activity: My super dad Reading: Ensure you have enough copies of the worksheets: My super dad. According to pg. 39 of the CAPS for Grade R Term 2 week English Home Language emergent reading, the learners should read pictures and tell a story. The educator should tell the learners to look at the pictures about the dad. The educator can ask the learners questions about what the dad does: - What are the children and the dad doing in the first picture? They are playing soccer. - What are the children and the dad doing in the second picture? They are watching TV. - What are the children and the dad doing in the third picture? They are flying a kite. - What are the children and the dad doing in the fourth picture? They are playing tennis. - What are the children and the dad doing in the fifth picture? They are fishing. - What are the children and the dad doing in the sixth picture? They are hugging. The educator can ask the learners to look and the pictures and read the pictures. The learners should make up a story about the pictures and tell their partners their story. The learners can then draw a picture of their father. The educator should explain the concept of rhyme. Rhyming words are words like best and blessed and me and knee. The educator should read the poem to the learners. The educator should ask the learners if they can identify which words in the poem rhyme. The learners can draw a picture of their mom. Suggested answer The rhyming words are: Much and touch. Everyday and play. Me and knee. Food and mood. Best and blessed. Reading and Phonics: Phonics Phonics Activity: Match the rhyming words Reading and phonics: Ensure you have enough copies of the worksheet Match the rhyming words. Rhyming words are words like car and star and box and fox. The students should identify the words that rhyme. The teacher can first point to the pictures and read the words aloud with the students. According to pg. 40 of the CAPS for Grade R English Home Language Term 2 Phonics, the learners should distinguish aurally between different sounds especially at the beginning of words. In this worksheet learners will learn the vowel sounds and identify which letter each picture starts with. The educator should point at the pictures and ask the learners to say the words: elephant, apple, umbrella, octopus, ice cream. The educator can explain that each picture starts with a sound A, E, I, O, U. The learners should cut out the boldly outlined letters. The learners should paste the letters under the picture of the word that begins with that letter. The learners should also draw their own pictures of something different that begins with the letters A, E, I, O, U.

Emergent Handwriting Activity: Help the animals find their food Ensure you have enough copies of the worksheets: Help the animals find their food According to pg. 41 of the CAPS for Grade R English Home Language Term 2 Emergent writing, the learners should traces simple outlines and copy patterns, words and letters onto paper. The learners should join the dotted lines and trace the patterns to help each animal find its food. This will help the learners to improve their fine motor co-ordination. The learners can colour in the pictures.
