3 Teaching Notes Introduction Islands is a new, fun and exciting course for young learners and teachers. Islands motivates children by introducing them to a group of characters in an Online World that mirrors the Island in their English. Pupils follow the characters on a quest throughout their whilst listening to stories, singing songs, communicating and playing games along the way. Most importantly, pupils will enjoy themselves and make their own discoveries in English. In Islands learning is an adventure! On Family Island, two of the Voom family children, Rita and Zak, and their friends Millie and Oscar, discover a dragon s egg with a note. It hatches and they take it home to the Voom s hose. Pupils follow the children on a quest to help find all the items the baby dragon, Waldo, needs until they find his mother. Teaching Methodology Islands methodology builds on the traditional 3 Ps (Presentation, Practice, Production) approach. This is a tried and tested approach favoured by teachers. The Islands 5 Ps approach adds also Personalisation and Pronunciation. An innovative feature of this course is its enriched digital offer. An Online World, the Active Teach Interactive Whiteboard Software and Book provide opportunities to enrich pupil s learning both at school and at home. The material is divided into cycles and comprises a total of 0 Lessons. There are regular review opportunities in the form of Have Fun, and Progress Check. Each cycle places strong emphasis on developing learners skills, and includes reading activities, writing activities, listening activities, speaking tasks and games, as well as stories. Context-related grammar is presented on every story. As well as the stories, there are fun songs and chants throughout the s. Other special features include CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and cultural references. Islands offers an integrated phonics programme designed to aid literacy. The Story, provided as a cartoon strip, recycles vocabulary and structures and is usually linked to the values topic summarized in the Values box on the Pupil s page. There is a section for Special Days (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Summer fun etc). Also, Islands 1 Pupil s includes a Cut and play section and the Activity includes vocabulary stickers. Pearson Education Hellas,

On each level of Islands ActiveTeach there are four animated story episodes with Islands characters to reinforce and extend the language of the course, focusing on the topics and language of two units. There are also four animated Language Moments episodes with different humorous characters which help teach a common language point. What is more, 62 pages of photocopiable material are offered via the ActiveTeach to give maximum flexibility and variety throughout the teaching year. For more details please refer to the Teacher s Book page 2. Teacher s Book: The Teacher s Guide has been specifically written so as to provide step-by-step, useful lesson plans for all the course material.
