FOOD MENU SIR ISAAC NEWTON Born January 1643 Died March 1727 WHO IS SIR ISAAC NEWTON? "Considered By Many To Be The Greatest And Most Influential Scientist Who Ever Lived." His own academic achievements and his scientific participation of various other famous theories are to numerous to mention here.. However, on a personal level..., he was a difficult man to get along with. If no one turned up to his lectures, he would talk to an empty room! He had a bit of temper, and was a bit of a loner, he was also deeply religious. He studied not far from here at Trinity College (there is an apple tree outside his study window) and is said to have gone on long walks. We like to think he strolled up this very hill to enjoy the best view over Cambridge from the top of Castle Mound. COULD THE SIR ISAAC NEWTON PUB BE ON THE SITE OF CAMBRIDGE S OLDEST INN? In the second century AD, a Roman building which may have been a wayside pub or inn lay partly beneath the Isaac Newton public house on Castle Street (Alison Taylor, Cambridge The Hidden History). A deep cellar and drinking vessels were also found. It s quite staggering to think that nearly 2,000 years ago, people may have enjoyed a beer in a pub on this very spot, near the crossing of two main Roman roads. A public house has stood on this site since 1878, next door was a pub called the Prince Albert which closed in 1931, the two pubs were possibly amalgamated. The Sir Isaac Newton pub today has a modern extension, the oldest part being where the pool table is now. In the early 1980s, the pub and neighboring buildings faced demolition when an office development (Castle Park) took place around it, but it escaped the bulldozer. The modern extension to the building was carried out in 1987 during which part of the old building may have been demolished.
