1 OBJECTIVE Most of the college campuses have got a Wireless Network and Internet Connection 1. Any KdG student can go online on campus with his own laptop. This manual is primarily meant for new students, but can be utilised by any student that needs to reconnect to the network. This manual describes what you have got to do if Windows XP is the current Operating System on your laptop. If this is not the case, you will have to consult a different manual. (http://www.kdg.be/praktisch/ict/draadloos-internet): Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 MAC OS X 2 WORKING WIRELESS AT KDG 2.1 The Wireless Networks for students There are two Wireless Networks available for students. KDG_Open is the network for: Guests. Students that want to use the Wireless Network for the first time and therefore need to use KDG_Open as an intermediate stage. Students that are having trouble connection to KDG_Student and therefore temporarily have to rely on KDG_Open. In normal circumstances you won t connect to KDG_Open since there is no direct access to your Home Drive, the Shares or the college printers. Mind you! The data that you send through KDG_Open are NOT automatically coded and are possibly legible to others. So never send passwords, credit card data or other sensitive information through this network. KDG_Student is the common student network. It is a secured network. Your network traffic will be coded through this specific network. You do however need a once only configuration. (More further on) 2.2 Preceding checks/actions Mostly, everything is fine but it is always best to check. 1 ICT jargon is put in bold, you will have to read the rest of the text with the same subject related meaning. 1. On most laptops there is a switch (touch button, slide button, ) to turn the connection on or off. Turn 2 it on. 2. Choose a safe KdG Password and don t forget to change it regularly. (See the manual Student Account - http://www.kdg.be/praktisch/ict) 2.3 Installation The standard operating procedure consists of three steps that will be elaborated in the next chapters. Log in on KDG_Open in order to download the KdG-certificate. This is also possible through the Wired Network or outside KdG. Install the KdG-certificate. Log in on KDG_Student. 3 SETTINGS WIRELESS KDG NETWORKS With the following data you should be able to add the Wireless Student Networks to your computer. The numerous different distributions of make it hard to write a definite manual. 3.1 KDG_Open To work with KDG_Open you only have to insert your User Name (e-mail address) and matching password on a webpage after you have been connected. There is no need for special configuration steps. 3.1.1 Settings: 1. SSID: KDG_Open 2. Security type: Unsecured! 3. Authentication: You will get to see this through a Web Page when you try to open an Internet Page in your browser. 4. User Name: KdG E-mail Address 5. 3.1.2 Login and Logout at KDG_Open: 1. When you are connected to KDG_Open, go on the internet. You will immediately be sent to the KdG Wireless Network Portal. If not, surf to: https://12.12.12.12/login.html. (You might get a Security Warning concerning a problem with the certificate. Ignore this and continue to the website.) 2. A pop-up window will appear. Make sure your browser allows pop-ups from the portal. (You ll possibly have to ignore another Safety Warning.) 3. To log out, click Logout in the pop-up. You can recall this window through https://12.12.12.12/logout.html. 3.2 The KdG Root Certificate. Download the KdG Root Certificate at the KdG Website bellow. http://www.kdg.be/praktisch/ict. It s under (Draadloos) internet. Install it on your computer. 3.3 KDG_Student 3.3.1 Settings: 1. SSID: KDG_Student 2. Security type/ Encryption type: WPA2 (Enterprise) / AES (for older laptops: WPA (Enterprise) / TKIP) 3. Authentication-type: PEAP (Version 0) 4. Authentication-protocol (Inner Authentication): MSCHAPv2 5. Certificatz: Karel de Grote ROOT CA 6. User Name: KdG E-mail Address 7. Password: your KdG Password 8. Mode: Infrastructure 9.
