L - o n L-on Secondary Battery Lthum-on Rechargeable Battery LITHIUM-ION RECHARGEABLE BATTERY Notes for Desgners Select the correct type of battery to match the operatng condtons such as load current, etc. The nformaton n ths secton s for lthum-on cells only. Maxell offers these cells (excludng CLB) n battery pack format only. These nclude electronc crcuts to prevent overcharge, overdscharge and so on. These battery packs are custom-developed and produced accordng to specal requrements regardng operatng condtons and specfcatons. As a result, a mnmum number of unts may apply to such customzed orders from customers purchasng battery packs. For detals, consult your nearest Maxell dealer or dstrbutor. Charge condtons To get the most out of lthum-on batteres and use them safely, please read the followng requrements carefully: Charge mode Charge voltage Max. charge current Charge temperature Charge control flowchart (sample) Refer to the followng flowchart when desgnng constant current and constant voltage battery chargers. Start charge Check battery connecton Check battery temperature Check battery voltage Passed Constant current, constant voltage charge Current montorng Temperature montorng Tme montorng Passed Charge completon Constant current, constant voltage charge (CCCV) 4.20±0.05V / cell, 4.40±0.05V / cell 1I ta 0 to +45 deg. C Faled Prelmnary charge Faled Abnormal charge stop Safety Instructons Improper use of the battery may cause heat, fre, exploson, damage or reduced battery capacty. Please read and follow the handlng nstructons for the battery before and durng usage. The followngs are general cautons and gudelnes only and as such may not nclude every possble usage scenaro. The manufacturer wll not be lable for actons taken or accdents caused. Danger Do not dp or wet the battery n water, seawater, or other lqud. Otherwse the battery may be shorted, whch may generate heat or cause damage. Do not put the battery nto a fre. Otherwse, the electrolyte may burn or cause an exploson. Do not heat the battery. Otherwse the electrolyte may bol and resn parts may melt, causng leakage, exploson or fre. The battery has a predetermned polarty. If the battery wll not connect well to the charger or equpment, do not try to connect the battery forcefully. Check the polarty frst. If the battery s connected n reverse, t wll be charged n reverse and may cause leakage, heat generaton, exploson or fre due to an abnormal chemcal reacton. Do not connect the battery n reverse relaton to the postve (+) and negatve ( ) termnals n the charger or equpment. If the battery s connected n reverse, t wll be charged n reverse, dscharge excessve current and may cause heat generaton, exploson or fre due to an abnormal chemcal reacton. Do not let the battery termnals (+ and ) come nto contact wth a wre or any metal (lke a metal necklace or a harpn) wth whch t s carred or stored. In such a case, the battery wll be shorted and dscharge excessve current, whch may result n heat generaton, exploson or fre. Do not apply any heavy mpact to the battery, throw or drop t. Otherwse the battery may be shorted and result n heat generaton, exploson or fre. 3

LITHIUM-ION RECHARGEABLE BATTERY Do not drve a nal nto, hammer or stamp on the battery. Otherwse the battery may be shorted and result n heat generaton, exploson or fre. Do not solder the battery drectly. Heat appled durng solderng may melt resn parts such as separator or gasket, and result n leakage, heat generaton, exploson or fre. Do not dsassemble or alter the battery. Otherwse the battery may be shorted and result n heat generaton or fre. Do not use or leave the battery near fre, heaters, nsde an automoble n hot weather or under strong sunshne. Such condtons of hgh temperature may damage the separator, and the battery may be shorted and result n heat generaton, exploson or fre. When chargng the battery, do not use any battery charger not specfed by the manufacturer. Always follow the charge condtons specfed by the manufacturer. If the battery s charged under other condtons (a hgh temperature, a hgh voltage/current or an altered charger) not specfed by the manufacturer, the battery may cause heat generaton, exploson or fre due to abnormal chemcal reactons. Do not connect the battery drectly to an electrc outlet or cgarette lghter socket n a car. Applyng a hgh voltage may generate an excessve current and cause an electrc shock. In such a case, the battery may leak electrolyte, overheat, explode or cause fre. Warnngs Do not put the battery n a mcrowave oven or a pressure cooker. Sudden heat may damage the seal of the battery and may cause heat generaton, exploson or fre. Do not use the battery together wth a prmary battery such as a dry battery or other battery of a dfferent capacty, type and/or brand. In such a case, over-dscharge durng use or over-charge durng chargng may occur and abnormal chemcal reactons may cause heat generaton, exploson or fre from the battery. Cauton If the battery leaks and ts electrolyte comes nto contact wth skn or clothes, wash the contact area well wth tap water or other clean water rght away. Otherwse skn may break out n a rash. When the battery s expected not to be used for a long tme, take the battery out of the equpment or devce and store t n a less humd area. After long perods of storage wthout beng used, the battery should be charged before t s used. Charge the battery every 6 months to the level specfed by the manufacturer, even f the battery s not used. Do not leave the battery pack connected to the charger. It may cause the degradaton of battery performance, such as a shortenng of battery lfe. Turn off your equpment or devce power swtch after use. Do not use the battery n other than the followng temperature ranges: Charge Dscharge Storage (less than 30 days) Storage (less than 90 days) Notes for treatng used batteres 0 deg. C to +45 deg. C -20 deg. C to +60 deg. C -20 deg. C to +50 deg. C -20 deg. C to +35 deg. C Insulate (+) and ( ) termnals wth tape. Do not remove coatng. Do not expose to ran or water. Do not dsassemble. Do not leave under strong sunshne. Store n rugged receptacle and cover wth a ld. L - o n If you notce any unusual odor, heat, dscoloraton, deformaton or any other characterstc apart from what you are used to whle usng, chargng or storng the battery, then take t out of the equpment or charger, and avod usng t. Usng t n such state may result n heat generaton, exploson or fre. If the battery leaks or emts an unusual odor, remove t from the vcnty of any fre mmedately. The electrolyte may catch fre, whch may cause heat generaton or exploson. Do not let leaked electrolyte come nto contact wth the eyes. In the event of such contact, flush the eyes wth plenty of water mmedately and consult a doctor. Otherwse prolonged contact may cause serous njury. 4

L-on Secondary Battery Prsmatc Lthum-on Rechargeable Battery L - o n Features Thn battery wth hgh capacty Maxell s orgnal technologes, such as electrode technology, have realzed thn batteres wth hgh capacty that can be used n compact hgh-performance moble devces. Cell Structure Gas release vent Negatve termnal Laser seal Stable dscharge under varous temperature condtons Lthum-on batteres provde stable dscharge wthn a wde range of temperatures, between 20 deg. C and 60 deg. C. Separators Postve electrode Excellent cost performance Superor rechargng propertes ensure a servce lfe of about 500 charge/dscharge cycles under normal usage condtons. The superor cost/performance rato ensures that lthum-on batteres are ultmately more economcal than prmary batteres. Postve can Negatve electrode Hgher energy densty and an operatng voltage of over 3.7V A lthum-on battery delvers and mantans a stable operatng voltage of over 3.7V untl fnal dscharge three tmes as much voltage as an N-Cd or N-MH battery provdes. Therefore, t takes only one-thrd as many lthum-on batteres to provde the equvalent amount of voltage as N-Cd or N-MH batteres provde. Ths means that portable devces can be made much smaller and lghter.
