Introduction 1 vcenter Server Hertet is Windows sed service specificlly designed to provide High Avilility or Disster Recovery protection for vcenter Server configurtions without requiring ny specilized hrdwre. This chpter includes the following topics: vcenter Server Hertet Concepts, on pge 7 Communictions, on pge 8 vcenter Server Hertet Switchover nd Filover Processes, on pge 10 vcenter Server Hertet Concepts Architecture vcenter Server Hertet softwre is instlled on Primry (production) server nd Secondry (redy-stndy) server. These nmes refer to the Identity of the servers nd never chnge throughout the life of the server. Depending on the network environment, vcenter Server Hertet cn e deployed in Locl Are Network (LAN) for High Avilility or Wide Are Network (WAN) for Disster Recovery, providing the flexiility necessry to ddress most network environments. When deployed, one of the servers performs the Role of the Active server tht is visile on the Pulic network while the other is Pssive nd hidden from the Pulic network ut remins s redy-stndy server. The Secondry server hs different Fully Qulified Domin Nme (FQDN) different thn the Primry server ut uses the sme file nd dt structure, sme Principl (Pulic) network ddress, nd cn run ll the sme pplictions nd services s the Primry server. Only one server cn disply the Principl (Pulic) IP ddress nd e visile on the Pulic network t ny given time. vcenter Server Hertet softwre is symmetricl in lmost ll respects, nd either the Primry server or the Secondry server cn tke the ctive role nd provide protected pplictions to the user. vcenter Server Hertet provides continuous ccess to the pssive server simultneously s the ctive server continues to service clients llowing the pssive server to e esily ccessed for mintennce purposes, updting nti-mlwre definition files, receiving operting system hot-fixes, updtes nd ptches from third-prty mngement softwre, nd llows use of third-prty monitoring tools. VMwre, Inc. 7

Instlltion on Windows Server 2008 When the Secondry Server is Virtul Protection Levels vcenter Server Hertet provides the following protection levels: Server Protection provides continuous vilility to end users through hrdwre filure scenrio or operting system crsh. Additionlly, vcenter Server Hertet protects the network identity of the production server, ensuring users re provided with replic server on the filure of the production server. Network Protection proctively monitors the network y polling up to three nodes to ensure tht the ctive server is visile on the network. Appliction Protection mintins the ppliction environment ensuring tht pplictions nd services sty live on the network. Performnce Protection monitors system performnce ttriutes to ensure tht the system dministrtor is notified of prolems nd cn tke pre-emptive ction to prevent n outge. Dt Protection intercepts ll dt written y users nd pplictions, nd mintins copy of this dt on the pssive server which cn e used in the event of filure. vcenter Server Hertet provides ll five protection levels continuously, ensuring ll fcets of the user environment re mintined t ll times, nd tht the Pulic network continues to operte through s mny filure scenrios s possile. Communictions vcenter Server Hertet communictions consist of two crucil components, the VMwre Chnnel nd the Principl (Pulic) network. To ccommodte communictions requirements, vcenter Server Hertet cn e configured to use either multiple NICs (1 X Chnnel nd 1 X Principl (Pulic) connection) on ech server providing seprte dedicted VMwre Chnnel network from the Principl (Pulic) network or single NIC on ech server to fulfill oth the VMwre Chnnel nd Principl (Pulic) network connection requirements. Figure 1-1. Communictions Between Primry nd Secondry Servers 8 VMwre, Inc.

Chpter 1 Introduction VMwre Chnnel The first component is the VMwre Chnnel which provides communictions etween the ctive nd pssive servers. The VMwre Chnnel is used for control nd dt trnsfer from the ctive server to the pssive server nd for monitoring of the ctive server's sttus y the pssive server. The NICs on the ctive nd pssive servers used for the VMwre Chnnel re normlly configured with IP ddresses outside of the Principl (Pulic) network sunet rnge nd re referred to s the VMwre Chnnel ddresses. During instlltion, setup will disle NetBIOS for the VMwre Chnnel(s) on the ctive nd pssive servers to prevent server nme conflicts. The NICs tht support connectivity cross the VMwre Chnnel cn e stndrd 100BseT Ethernet crds providing throughput of 100 Mits per second cross stndrd Ct-5 cling. When using multiple NICs providing seprte dedicted VMwre Chnnel, this chnnel requires no hus or routers, ut the direct connection does require crossover cling. When configured for WAN deployment, configure the VMwre Chnnel to use sttic routes over switches nd routers to mintin continuous communictions independent from corporte or pulic trffic. Principl (Pulic) Network The second component is the Principl (Pulic) network used y clients to connect to the ctive server. The Principl (Pulic) network provides ccess to the Principl (Pulic) IP ddress used y clients to connect to the ctive server nd cn e moved etween the two Primry nd Secondry servers to ensure clients cn continue to connect to the ctive server in the event of switchover or filover. The Principl (Pulic) IP ddress is sttic IP ddress tht is only ville on the currently ctive server nd is the IP ddress client uses to connect to the ctive server. It must e configured s sttic IP ddress, tht is, not DHCP (Dynmic Host Configurtion Protocol) enled. In the figure ove, the IP ddress is configured s 192.168.1.127. The Principl (Pulic) IP ddress is lwys ssigned to the ctive server in the pir nd in the event of switchover or filover, will e removed from the previously ctive server nd ressigned to the new ctive server. The pssive server will lwys hve the Mngement IP ddress (discussed elow)ville nd therefore provide ccess to the pssive server. Mngement IP Address Both the Primry nd Secondry servers re configured with Mngement IP ddresses tht llow ccess to the server when the server is in the pssive role. The Mngement IP ddress is sttic IP ddress in the sme sunet s the Principl (Pulic) IP ddress nd is lwys ville for dministrtors to ccess the server. VMwre, Inc. 9

Instlltion on Windows Server 2008 When the Secondry Server is Virtul vcenter Server Hertet Switchover nd Filover Processes vcenter Server Hertet uses four different procedures mnged switchover, utomtic switchover, utomtic filover, nd mnged filover to chnge the role of the ctive nd pssive servers depending on the sttus of the ctive server. Mnged Switchover You cn click Mke Active on the vcenter Server Hertet Console Server: Summry pge to mnully initite mnged switchover. When mnged switchover is triggered, the running of protected pplictions is trnsferred from the ctive mchine to the pssive mchine in the server pir. The server roles re reversed. Automtic Switchover Automtic switchover (uto-switchover) is similr to filover (discussed in the next section) ut is triggered utomticlly when system monitoring detects filure of protected ppliction. Automtic Filover Automtic filover is similr to utomtic switchover (discussed ove) ut is triggered when the pssive server detects tht the ctive server is no longer running properly nd ssumes the role of the ctive server. Mnged Filover Mnged filover is similr to utomtic filover in tht the pssive server utomticlly determines tht the ctive server hs filed nd cn wrn the system dministrtor out the filure, ut no filover ctully occurs until the system dministrtor mnully triggers this opertion (the defult configurtion in DR environment). 10 VMwre, Inc.

Implementtion 2 This chpter discusses the deployment options nd prerequisites to successfully implement vcenter Server Hertet nd provides step-y-step process to ssist in selecting options required for instlltion.
