Logistics in NRW Facts 284,000 staff are employed in 27,800 logistics companies in NRW Nearly 17,000 companies are accounted for by logistics-specific services, the rest are logistics-related suppliers and service providers The companies in the logistics sector in NRW have generated a turnover of EUR 70 billion. If jobs in trade and industry, which are also concerned with logistics, are also taken into consideration, the sector even employs 615,000 people in NRW Measured by the number of employees, the logistics sector is the second largest sector in NRW, after the health industry 3

Logistics Regions in NRW (core regions) The Cologne / Bonn region is one of the logistical core regions in the state and particularly strong in the areas trade and chemicals logistics. The Duisburg Lower Rhine region embraces Duisburg as well as the districts Wesel and Kleve. Apart from the Rhine which acts as the artery for this region, logistic contractors for a wide range of tasks can be found here. The University of Duisburg-Essen has established a special focal point in logistics (Center for Logistics and Traffic). The eastern Ruhr region comprises the strong locations Dortmund, Unna and Hamm. Not only the logistical heart of German trade logistics beats in this region Europe's most important research institute for logistics, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), is also domiciled here. 5

duisport Europe's largest inland port duisport is Europe's largest inland port with an area of 1,000 hectares, including 21 port basins with more than 180 hectares of water area. Handling approx. 45 million tons of goods by ship, rail and truck, Duisburg is the most important distribution center in the European canal network. Including the private com-mercial harbors, over 100 million tons are handled at the Duisburg location per year. More than 200 companies offer their services in duisport. Four intermodal terminals are provided, as well as over 1 million m² of covered storage space, about half of which is intended for modern contract logistics. Duisburger Hafen AG has a participating interest in the "Antwerp Gateway" a large container terminal at the Belgian seaport. The terminal went into service in July 2005 and has direct rail and ship links to Duisburg. 8
